Williams: Break out game?

Simple.

Many of us thought Roberts was drafted primarily to be our punt return guy.

Bad assumption. We have Breaston in his last year, injury prone Doucet and?????????????? Why did the Cards then draft and sign like 4 more players that have returned punts.

Then reports came from camp that Roberts was having trouble fielding punts. He did nothing really to dispel the knock on his hands when for whatever reason in the first preseason game he and DA had trouble connecting.

No issues with his hands or fielding punts in college. He didn't all of a sudden catch a fatal disease.

In addition the Cards appeared to be loaded at WR with SWilliams playing well and other players at other positions were performing and seemed to be more deserving of a roster spot.

Glad we didn't bank on all our WR's remaining healthy. Glad we have some youngins to season for when/if Breaston and Early move on.

Right or wrong it was a reasonable position to take.

Turns out it was our 2009 second round pick that was the victim of poor play by him and better play by others especially our UDFAs.

Many made a reasonable arguement for keeping 4 QB's or trying to slip Hall or Skeleton to the PS. There are just some things that you know won't happen.

The number of 3rd rounders cut their rookie season is incredibly small. It takes a horrible attitude to achieve that distinction.

Whiz has established a culture where all draft picks are given a chance to develop because they do it well and have faith in the drafting.

For me it was rather simple to know that Andre would not be cut.

Duck, you are talking about the head case buster davis and Cody Brown. As I stated attitude makes a difference (buster). Brown was on the team for enough time for the coaches to say no thanks. Porter got on him for being soft in training camp and it looks like he showed his true stripes.

Andre had the dropsies (aka Breaston his rookie year) but was getting thrown to a bunch because he was GETTING OPEN. His hands didn't turn to stone all of a sudden. Obviously this is what the coaching staff thought since he wasn't cut.

There are certain things that seem like a lock to me, Andre not getting cut was one of them. I have missed on some of these before (Leinart getting cut) but I was far from alone on that one.

Sometimes one has to look beyond the simple thought process and consider the big picture and the world as it truly exists.

Let's stop our heads and agree that I was right.

Monty, cardsfanmd, myself and others felt/knew Andre wouldn't be cut. As I posted before there are very few 3rd rd picks that are cut their rookie year. Since you are a whiz at looking this kinda thing up prove me wrong.

Before we let things get completely out of hand, let's not forget that Roberts, Komar and Williams are all rooks and can be expected to make their share of rookie mistakes.

Many NFL head coaches deal with this kind of problem by keeping fewer rooks and minimizing their risk of contributing to a loss by not playing them very much in the earlier part of their fiirst year.

Wiz & the Cards opted to keep 3 rooks because of their talented upsides. Because of the injuries to Fitz and Early, they had no choice but to let them see a lot of playing-action (Interesting side-note: Anderson was said to be at his most productive vs. StL when we were in 3 and 4 WR sets - so even when Williams and Komar weren't catching footballs, their very presence out there was aiding the cause).

Final point - You can't compare all three rookie wideouts as being from the same cookie-cutter mold: Williams is a big tall physical WR with speed. Komar and Roberts are smaller, quicker, more mobile slot guys. Within the context of the offense, each guy has his own set of unique roles.

Good thing Coach MAC didn't keep Q on the bench as a rookie.

We do need to cut these guys some slack though because Komar and Williams are UDFAs and Roberts a late 3rd round pick from a small school not just because they are rookies.

I cannot imagine Williams not being a big contributer this year. Caught everything thrown to him in preseason. If Fitz is up to a rasonable speed and Breaston ( whom we should lock up now) having a monster game Willams should have a good game.

If the feakin Colts can have Austin Collie & Pierre Garcon come out of NOWHERE(well a 4th and 6th round picks in the draft.Plus Collie was awesome at a passing school BYU) and be awesome their rookie year.WHY can't WE have the same with Williams and Komar?? Not to mention a real high drafted player amongst these nobodies and what he should be able to accomplish in Roberts.

Can we develop wide recievers as well and as fast as the colts can?I know Whiz knows he can.Its gonna take a little more stability at quarterback IMO though.Manning is bringing those pups along very fast with his ability to communicate and Clyde Christenson who coached those two guys up so fast is now the assistant head coach & his first year as Offensive coordinator this year and they have a new WR's coach.

John McNulty is our wide recievers coach who is in his 2nd year coaching our recievers and is coming from Rutgers for four years.Bigtime in John's past history is in 2000-01 he coached wide recievers with the Jags and had a memerable pair in Jimmy Smith & Keenan McCardell and in "99" the Jags were 14-2 with John coaching there.

John has a major job ahead of him this year with past proof its time he used his vet NFL experience added with working with college kids at Rutgers and bring these kids to the Front Fast.This would be a great week to GET IT STARTED!

I think Williams is going to be a very good NFL WR, but you answered your own question here. Manning is a big part of the reason for those WRs had such success so early, IMO. I don't think we can duplicate that with Anderson. Warner, maybe, but not Anderson.
