I am leaning more towards a user permissions problem... I would be interested to see how your connections work logged in as the real adminitrator, rather than a user with admin privledges...

I believe it is one of two things.... your NetBios name needs to be recached with your companies DNS. Connect to your VPN and try one of the following

ipconfig -r

Or you need to renew it

ipconfig /registerdns

I tried release/renew already...

Just did registerdns and we'll see what happens.

No, haven't had time for a new card install yet.

Do you guys really think that could affect something that seems software-related?

Yep, network cards can be picky like that. If you have another PCI slot in your computer, you may be able to just uninstall the network card, move the device to another PCI slot, and reinstall the one that you already have.

You should be able to find a linksys or D-Link NIC for $10 or so.

Workstation, Server, and Computer Browser services are running and set to automatic.

Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks and Windows Printer and file sharing and installed and enabled for the network card.

You are joined to the same workgroup as the other computers.

You are using the latest drivers for the network card.

I have an Internet Gateway as one of my network connections...I wonder if I should just like delete everything involving the network, and start over on this box...

You can just delete all your network cards and reboot. XP will automatically reinstall them

Did it, nothing worked...

I honestly don't knwo what else to do.

The other two computers are set up fine, I really shouldn't haev to change anything on them I don't think.

I've run the Network Wizard a ton of times, although know that I have the built in Ethernet disabled, it's asking to configure the network for that one, or ignore disabled hardware.

But either way...I just don't see anything...

I am not sure if it was all the windows updates I just ran, OR the fact that this location in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters\

Has a key named "TransportBindName" and it was blank, and is supposed to be \Device\, which I changed...

But when I rebooted it...it's all back to normal

THanks guys for all the help...just stumbled upon a lucky Google page once again.

The event viewer error was what led me to the right place.

Well after looking around for an answer to this same problem I came across your forums. Just letting you know the answer for me for this problem was that it was a virus living in:

C:\windows\system32 called mssnger.exe

The virus is set as being hidden so you'll need to enable the viewing of hidden files to see it.

Use a program like hijackthis from www.merijn.org to remove the dodgy reg key.
And use something like moveonboot to set the file for deletion on next startup if you are having problems deleting it.

Hope this helps anyone who is having the same problem with NetBT.
