swd1974 said:I am floored that curling is a sport. Hwo was it started? I know. 2 rich old guys were playing a game where you slid rocks across the frozen pond and tried to make it land in good spots for points.
So the two rich old guys make a nice wager on the game and losses because his last rock gets thrown off course by debris.
So next year they make a bigger wager and the guy who lost paid a bunch of immigrants to sweep the ice so he doesnt lose like last time. So the other guy pays for a bunch of guys to. But then they realise they should limit the number of guys with brooms.
Sounds plausable. but how is it an actual sport?!?!?!?!
That's like saying... how is golf a sport...
Curling as a sport dates back to the 17th century.
You'd find it less amusing, and certainly more entertaining, if you went down to a rink and saw the pros play. The strategy, shot making and, yes - sweeping... are quite interesting.
It's a big sport up here. Every community has a hockey and curling rink.
At last year's Cdn Championships, the paid attendence during the week was over 300,000.
