The Rockets (43-25) have won six straight games, with the latest coming in Saturday's come-from-behind effort versus Chicago. Jalen Green led the way against the Bulls with a game-high 28 points, including 11 in the final six minutes as Houston pulled away.
The Grizzlies and Nuggets are both 43-25, as well, with Memphis dropping a game on Friday versus the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver unexpectedly falling Saturday to the lowly Washington Wizards.
The Rockets have already clinched a head-to-head tiebreaker over Memphis (thanks to going 3-1 in four head-to-head meetings), and they are 1-0 versus the Nuggets with two head-to-head meetings left.
So, with 14 games left to play in the NBA's 2024-25 regular season, the Rockets are currently the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference standings.
It's a stunning rise for a Houston team that was 41-41 and in the No. 11 spot in 2023-24, yet that's where Ime Udoka has the Rockets with one month left to go.
If the regular-season ended today, the Rockets would play a best-of-seven series in the first round of the 2025 playoffs versus the West's No. 7 seed. As things currently stand, that would be the winner of a play-in tournament game between the Minnesota Timberwolves (39-29) and Los Angeles Clippers (37-30). As the higher seed, the Rockets would have home-court advantage and host Game 1, Game 2, Game 5 (if necessary), and Game 7 (if necessary) of that series.
If Houston is able to hold the No. 2 seed, they would also be in line to have home-court advantage in at least the second round of the playoffs.
The Rockets will look to maintain their recent momentum when they host the Philadelphia 76ers (22-44) on Monday night at Toyota Center. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m. Central.
The regular season ends on Sunday, April 13, fittingly with a matchup featuring the Nuggets and Rockets in Houston. Should the current standings hold, that could prove quite meaningful.
