I expect him to express his initial views as to how he will fit it in, which he did.

You highlighted only part of what he said...

He did say his views and his key point was special teams and he will work into playing time. It was highlighted because that is the same thing he says about all of his rookies and it is the route they take with all of their rookies. The highlighted point is his mantra it was the key point of his speech. I thought that was common knowledge with the way they handle rookies? He never said once he would immediately come in and play in any package, he has to earn it, the only area he said he would come in and play right away is special teams. He only said area's he envisioned to him to EVENTUAL get to once he earns it. Which is what I stated, I don't think he earns it until half way through the season.

We'll see, you can't coach speed and quickness and he sure seems to have that. Would hope he can get bigger and stronger working with Lott.

At this point I trust the coaches if they had him rated as high as they say they did I'm happy to get him a round later.

Love this pick and from the games I watched, he out played Hughes. I am stoked. He might be a year away but this is our starting ILB for next 5 years. Love how quickly he fills the holes.

“For me to replace him, it’s big shoes to fill, but I am going to get in there and work as hard as I can and be a better player than him or be as good as him,” Washington said on a conference call. “I have much respect for Karlos Dansby. I am looking forward to putting on the uniform and getting to work.”

The Cardinals believe Washington is capable. They believed it enough to surrender one of their two third-round picks in a trade with the Patriots to move up 11 spot, swapping picks in the second round for the Texas Christian product.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, Washington said he’ll weigh 235 when he reports to minicamp next week without sacrificing speed – the speed that drew the Cards in to covet him.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Washington was rated 12th on the team’s draft board, one spot behind first-round pick Dan Williams. He also said Washington was considered in the first round. As the second round progressed and Washington remained available, the Cards realized he likely wouldn’t last much longer. With the Patriots holding three second-round choices, they were a realistic trading partner. With Washington’s abilities, a trade was all but obvious.

The Cards were supposed to meet with Washington at the scouting combine, but scheduling conflicts forced Washington to miss it, and he visited Tempe in the weeks leading up to the draft. That just solidified the Cards’ feelings on him. Washington had 109 tackles in 13 games for college’s top-ranked defense. He also had three interceptions, 11 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks – Dansby-type stats.

“Karlos Dansby, we definitely have some similarities in the way we play,” Washington said. “He is bigger, but as far as athleticism and football IQ and passion for the game, I think I will fit right in and make some noise.”

Whisenhunt said they hoped Washington would eventually blossom into an every-down linebacker, emphasizing the rookie’s speed and playmaking potential. It sounded a lot like the way Whisenhunt would talk about the now-departed Dansby.

“In losing a player like Karlos Dansby who did a lot of things for us on the field,” Whisenhunt said, “we feel we have addressed that with a young guy who we feel can do a lot of similar things.”

Could not disagree more. 15 pounds on that dudes frame would be horrible for him. He has never even played at 230 in his football career, he has always been under 225 so I would say 235 is ideal. They will undoubtedly follow the Timmons mold, meaning he will stay in the 230 to 235 range but make him a stronger 235 who gets taught how to use leverage better. Of which I was leery of in the 1st but now that we have a fatty up front I am fine with the pick.

The one draw back with the Timmons mold is that I feel there is a 99% chance that it will take almost just as long to see the fruit, and it took Timmons a full two years before he developed. Maybe a little faster with a better strength coach but I think beyond special teams we are going to be disappointed in his production this year.

From his first interview:

Listed at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, Washington said he’ll weigh 235 when he reports to minicamp next week without sacrificing speed – the speed that drew the Cards in to covet him.

Big BQ!
Washington will develop faster than Timmons did, this is part of the reason that Whizz and Graves picked him up..He[Graves] Made a big point of talking up DW's intelligence, so I expect alot out of him mentally AND physically...

I still think this guy is a major project. I don't expect too much from him his rookie year. He does have a ton of potential though.

Whiz thinks this guy is a top 15 talent for our scheme. And he almost picked him in the first round.

I will reserve judgment on this pick. In Whiz I trust.

Same here. They think he can develop into something special. I can't wait to see what they do with this kid.

Washington is an impressive size/speed athlete who exhibits a great first step and showcases the range to easily track the ball sideline to sideline. He generates impressive power as a tackler and breaks down well on contact. He wraps up both in the hole and in space and consistently brings his legs through the play. He exhibits average power at the point of attack when asked to take on blocks inside but will drop his pad level and exhibit some anchor strength. He struggles to consistently fight his way through the block once an opposing lineman gets his hands on him and can be sealed from the play. Washington possesses above average instincts and reads his run keys quickly. But he will take a false step on misdirection plays and allows himself to get caught inside. He does a nice job using his length to keep himself clean when playing his way down the line.
He demonstrates good leverage on contact and does a great job fighting his way toward the ball. He displays impressive range in his back-pedal and a nose for the ball in coverage. He’s a bit high in his drop but redirects well and is rangy in zone coverage. But he will get caught watching the ball and loses track of his guy when asked to pick him up in man coverage. He’s one of the most impressive linebacker prospects in the nation and looks like a guy who can come in quickly and start for an NFL team.
Becomes a starter during his rookie year… A prospect who possesses physical attributes that will create mismatches vs. most opponents…

I think the Cardinal brass would heavily disagree with you. They wouldn't give heavy 1st round consideration to a player that they didn't expect contributions from in year 1. There are no guarantees in this business, but I think the kid will be a valuable addition right away.

His contributions will be heavily reliant on what Dan Williams gives us. If he can plug up two O Lineman like I expect him to, than this guy will hit 150 tackles this year.

Article states he had 39 reps in the bench at the combine. Is that correct? If true, dude is strong enough in my book.

I suspect that is probably an error on the writer's part.

Yeah, Daryl Washington did pretty low with 17 reps. Here are some other linebacker numbers:

Name Reps
Butler, Donald 35
Weatherspoon, Sean 34
Johnson, Micah 31
McLaughlin, Mike 29
Clayton, Keenan 27
Wilson, Kion 27
Lee, Boris 27
Angerer, Pat 26
Chaney, Jamar 26
Bowman, Navorro 26
