Don't you mean when?

If you're expecting Dockett every year from a 3rd rounder then you're delusional, but this kid will contribute. If ours hadn't sucked for so long you would know what a weapon STs can be. Also, we will likely lose either Fitz or Breatson in the next two years and WRs take a couple years to develop. I don't understand how you aren't seeing it, but this was a GREAT pick. i am done.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong and this kid turns into a weapon for us. And no, I don't expect DD in the 3rd every year, just not a 4th wr/pr. Somebody that will be on the field a lot.

If this kid were picked in the 3rd by anyone else in our division he'd be an immediate starter/slot guy. It's a good thing when you get many people's sleeper of the draft in the 3rd round and he isn't projected to have play a major role in his rookie year. That speaks to the talent already on the team.

Roberts could easily end up being a bust pick, but he has the ability to fill several needs that the Cardinals have which is why they grabbed him when they did. The single most important aspect that Roberts needs to bring to the Cardinals is being a threat in the punt return game. If he can do that, as well as lock down the 4th wide receiver spot, as I expect him to, he will be a fantastic value pick. Not to mention other possible contributions to special teams, and insurance down the line with Breaston's contract situation coming up. If not, he could end up being very average and a wasted pick.

Good point.

Plus, do you remember last year when Doucet caught his first TD how he was congatulated by his teammates in the end zone? Fitz and Breaston will be great mentors.

True. Last time we picked a PR, he busted....but turned out to be a hell of a great receiver.

If all Roberts does is return kicks successfully in his tenor w/ the Cards, Ill be a happy camper

I just listened to the audio of his interview on the Card's site...he mentioned something I found interesting. The Cardinals sent scouts to his practices, they must have really liked him because honestly how many guys on The Citadel are draftable? They obviously have had an eye on him prior to the Senior Bowl & Combine.

I don't have a problem with this pick. Obviously, Steve Keim knew exactly who he was and what he might do in the NFL. There's no sure bets on any pick. But, if he does what he is capabale of on PAPER right now, then he is really something this team needed.

This KIND OF reminds me of how the LSH pick last year was panned. (Yes, I know the difference between a third and 7th round pick.) Just because hardly any of us had ever heard about him, the immediate reaction is WTF?!

As soon as we were up to pick, Schein on Sirius immediately said it will be Roberts and that "the Cards absolutely LOVE this guy."

Had Roberts in one of my earlier mocks. Thought he would be a 4th rounder though. Here is what I said:

4b) Andre Roberts - WR - Citadel
This guy really stood out during the senior bowl. He consistantly got separation from the CBs and ran good routes. He is a tough player who could easily come in and be the #4 WR.

I love this pick. He fills a need as the 4th WR and will also compete for Punt return duties.

He looked great on the youtube hilites.. I like his escapability in the return game and wonder why he doesn't also return kickoffs? His character seems high!

From all accounts, he has a similar skillset to Gilyard but faster.

I think the player he compares most to is GOLDEN TATE. Put their scouting reports side by side and they sound exactly the same.

Roberts is a better return man than both. I've never been all that impressed with Gilyard, or Tate for that matter. Michael Floyd, when he comes out, is the WR you want from ND.

I watched the highlight reels and what I saw was him beating guys that had barely more athletic ability than me, which is not saying anything. Almost every punt return seemed like he had 15 yards to run before he even had to elude another player.

Look, I hope I'm wrong on this. But even if I am wrong, we still just used a 3rd round pick on a punt returner. With the way I expect the offense to be this year, run oriented, this guy will very rarely see the field.

As far as him being a replacement for Steve Breaston, if the Cards are smart they'll give Breaston an extension prior to the season before he lights it up as a #2 and prices himself out of our budget. He has proven to be a sure handed, humble, hard working receiver and I hope he remains a Cardinal. Instead of looking to groom behind him, they should be looking to extend him.

This kid is so much more than just a punt returner. He's got good hands. He will catch the ball in traffic. But the biggest thing he will bring is when we do go into a 4wr set he will be a match up nightmare for defenses. He gives Leinart a target that can take a WR screen and turn it into a big play. He has run a wildcat.
We will see him for about 10 plays a game and we )as well as opposing fans ) will be on the edge of our seats every time he touches the ball with just a bit of space.

Truth. Floyd is Fitz Part Deux IMHO. Kid is a Rock star.

Another thing to consider is if he turn out to be a 4TH reciever and a great special teamer (replacing Morey and Urban) it frees up another roster spot, to maybe carry an extra LB or O-lineman.

Given the offense this year will be more run oriented and possibly less dynamic than the Warner years, field position is going to be so much more important. In my opinion, if Roberts is worth just an extra 15 or 20 yards a game, its going to make a significant impact.

Roberts article... http://www.thestate.com/2010/04/25/1258903/andre-roberts-realizes-nfl-dream.html

Higgins, a Detroit Lions' assistant coach for four years before arriving at The Citadel in 2005, put a plan together for Roberts. He advised him to finish his degree requirements a semester early so he could prepare for the draft, and gave him a video of Roy Williams and Detroit's other receivers that he wanted Roberts to study.

Roberts did the rest, combining his athleticism with a willingness to work to become one of the most explosive FCS players the past three years.

"He was different here. He was a hard, hard worker. Football was awfully important to him," Higgins said. "When other guys were sleeping in on a Saturday, he'd be out on the JUGS machine catching footballs."

Wow. After reading that I wouldn't bet against the kid being in the NFL for the next ten years. If he is as hard a worker as it sounds, he could be a real weapon for us next year an beyond.

I think one of the other reasons he was drafted was his familiarity running the Wildcat. With Rolle and Boldin gone, I look for Roberts to be the primary weapon from that formation.
