Good stuff and a must see.

He is obviously trying to get the D players confidence back in themselves.

Don't be shocked if we draft another NT this year. Not that he has given up on Dumpster Dan but I get the sense he isn't sure he is the future. I don't mean to sound like he is down on Dan, just not 100% sure he will become a GAM. Competition and depth at the NT needed to be addressed anyway.

I wouldn't be shocked if Haggans and Porter are still here in 2011 either. They have experience in this D and since the learning curve is very steep they will be more effective then newbies to this system. Also will act as on the field coaches.

Horton is obviously a hard worker and very dedicated.

i like what he said..i just dont like why he named porter haggans ecc ecc..i mean he has to look at young guys and improve them if he want to be succesfull here .then he said the learning curve is long to know his sistem thats why a rookie wont play so much in his rookie season..at this point maybe is better to draft an offensive player

I know little to nothing about our new coach but think we need give him the benefit of a doubt. None of us our experts on coaches. All coaches had to start somewhere before they were recognized as competent or better. Who would have guessed that Lovie Smith or the Pittsburgh coach would be so successful. Who would have thought Dennis Greene or Buddy Ryan would have been so bad? Coach Horton walks in here with a clean slate and a lot of experience as a player and as a coach on a winning organization. He cannot be worse than what we had but like any coach will need the players to make a system work. That want happen in one year unfortunately. If there is a lockout it will be double tough as he want have any time to work with the players. Is everyone happy with Whiz calling his own plays? It worked with Warner because he would change them at the line if he thought it was needed. Now we are dealing with rookies mostly so it is on Whiz to make the calls that will work.

I still wonder if our two RB's are as good as we think they are? They look like good RBs in that they have size and speed. They have heart but can they recognize the holes or make the quick cuts. Something besides an offensive line seems to be missing with them. The greats seem to make something out of nothing. We seem to make nothing out of something. Perhaps a smaller and faster back like a Reggie Bush. Our two backs seem to mirror each other in style and size.

That video was extremely hard to watch, with the whole having to pause it every few seconds so I can do the back flips and cartwills in my living room.
I am seriously man -crushing on this dude. Everything he says makes so much sense, and I really am stoked about going after the QB all the time.

I was very impressed with Ray Horton on his interview. He is well spoken and talks like a coach who knows what he is doing and who has a plan. He sold me! I think he can sell the players. It was interesting to hear him state they did generally did not start rookies in Pittsburgh. I sure would like to see the CBA settled so Horton can have a chance to install his system. If the lockout lingers on until Aug-Sep he will have little to no chance to work with the players and install his system. Tough way for any coach to start. After listening to Ray I am pleased with the signing and just perhaps we ended up with the right guy after all is said and done. If we go with a defensive draft pick (I hope not--Gabbert please) I would think he has some good ideas as to who he would select as very likely the draft has already been discussed on some level at Pittsburgh.

I still read a lot of post talking about keeping Hall as a backup. Does that make any sense what so ever to any of you. I would have cut him already from what I have seen. Among other things he is just not big enough. The day of the small QB is coming to an end. I can easily see Skelton as a backup but in now way do I see Hall. If he comes in we will be in deep trouble at the QB position.

Horton clearly said his philosophy is pressure on the QB and blitz. If he has his way I sure see a DE if one qualifies as a #5. It was intinteresting to hear him say that 26 yds was the longest gain on a run all year against Pittsburgh. The guy sounds very intelligent. Like Buddy Ryan said of himself "we have a winner in town". I hope so!

I tend to believe that he has seen enough of our defense that he feels he can put players, (even the ones we have right now), into a position where they can be effective and make playes. I have long believed that not having our best players in the position to make plays was the biggest flaw in the defense that both Davis, and Clancy ran here. As examples of that I list playing Wilson in man coverage deep, (when he was clearly atroscious in man coverage), instead of playing him up more towards the line to be a disruptive force. We also played Porter as a constant rush linebacker, when clearly he had not the stamina to do that on an everydown basis. Those are just a couple of things that I believe Horton is talking about when he says he will have these players in position to make plays. Hopefully he will be much more successful than either Clancy or Davis were, and that over time, he can make us into a really good defensive team.

Interesting.

1st and 2nd down we will play a 3-4, and 3rd down we will play a 4-2. He then goes on to talk about a 1 man front ? I have seen some teams implement this....too cool.

That 4-2 brings up a lot of scenarios when it comes to personel.

Who are the two DT's going to be ?

Who are the DE's going to be ?

Who is the super special 5th DB ?

Who are the 2 LB's going to be ?

Wow...love this guy...intelligence and his mild demeanor. That is what makes up the best teachers. I think Wiz has a partner on the D.

What I took away:

1. Discipline
2. Controlled and Methodical aggressiveness.
3. Joey Porter and Clark Haggans will be here next year and will be utilized appropriately.
4. Dan Williams will be our Casey Hampton...but I think he will be better.
5. Wilson will be our version of Polamalu
6. Rhodes is a perfect deep safety.

I am exhilarated by the hire.
Playoffs...Playoffs...Yes, I said playoffs.

Lastly, He preaches technique, and placement of his players.

If you are in a race, and you let the guy you are racing against start 2 feet in front of you, and you run the race backwards....... you are not going to win the race.

Hopefully no more DLinemen coming high our of thier stance, no more DB's playing with their backs to the QB, no more mis-aligned LB's, and no more covering elite recievers with sub-par coverage defensemen.

Yeah this is a potential problem for all new coaches. One thing I liked and he talked about in his presser was that he wanted to get all that stuff out to his players before the lockout happens.

Thus even if they can't contact him or the team, he has all the philosophies and playbooks out to the players to study during the lockout.

Of course, it's up to them to do it or not, and it is obviously not an optimal situation. But given that, it seems like he is on top of that, and will do the best he can to get things rolling before the lockout.

Which of course, was another one of the reasons I like the presser. Not only is he just done being in a superbowl and losing, interviewing, etc...but given all of that, he is still able to think ahead to get the ball rolling before the lockout. Which speaks to him and/or the organization being prepared.

If those two things happen, I'd have a heart attack, and never see when we suddenly become a top-10 defense. Wilson isn't good enough to do that, and if DW becomes BETTER than Hampton? I will die happy :)

I said Wilson will be OUR version. I think the difference is that Wilson is better in the box...Wilson will have more help in coverage. I don't blame Wilson for some of the schemes and positions he was put into.

Dan Williams has a build like the Fridge but more athletic. He also showed a mean streak and aggressiveness at the end of the season.

I love the 1-5-5 defense on madden, it is sweet. In a 4-2 I would imagine CC will be the LDE, Dockett could play undertackle like he used to or maybe RDE, branch and big dan could be dt's as well, and porter could probably play RDE in non running 3rd downs. The 5th db would likely be rashad. Let him play back in zone so adub can harrass the qb.

Campbell and Docket would be the DTs.

Schofield and an OLB to be named later would play the DE/OLB

I will agree to disagree, campbell is much better suited to play LDE in a 4 man front. He has good pass rushing skills and can defend the run, but I think he's too tall and not stout enough to play dt effectively.

We have alot of talent on the D side of the ball. If Horton can utilize them properly we have the chance to improve leaps and bounds next season. I think more than anything B. Davis mis used the talent and never really utilized the Front line talent usually by playing B Rob to many snaps and Porter to many snaps. If Coach Horton sorts that out we have a good shot next year on D. I hope he can do it. Would love a Badass D.

If it's 3rd and 12, I'm willing to sacrafice a little bit of run defense for another guy who can get to the QB. Williams or Branch don't offer a pass rush.

Where's Butler???

After watching the interview one can't walk away without thinking that Horton is one smart dude! I submit that he is an excellent communicator and have little doubt that he knows his craft. What I find somewhat funny is since he was hired little or less than that is mentioned about Keith Butler....in other words, speaking for the majority I think we are all impressed and feel fortunate that team was able to snag him.

What a great interview. I am really impressed with his knowledge of the game and the way he will go about placing the players and installing his defense. I believe we have us a legit DC. Of course we will have to wait to see it in action, but I am excited.
