Very interesting article. Sounds like he had a tough life growing up. He made a mistake (a pretty gross one at that) but I would take a flyer on him.

It's a shame he's labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life, though. Dude was 16, she was 15 and it was consensual... even if it was his sister (ewww).

I agree with you here Kate. They were just kids, reletively the same age, and it was consensual. I'm sure he's paid a higher price than a lot of rapists. If he has the talent to play in the NFL I see no problem.

One NFL scout, who asked to remain anonymous, isn’t so sure. He points to the fact that the 24-year old has already been divorced, which could suggest a pattern of broken relationships. “I worry about this kid. Whether it's that again or something else, he has a history of serious problems,” he said.

“What disturbs me is that I don't know if he sees anything wrong with it,” the scout added. “He said where he comes from, this kind of thing happens all the time. I don’t think he’s at all ready for the rejection he's about to face once people find out.”

They weren't just kids; they were just siblings.

And while one might have the talent to play at the NFL level, the PR problems can't be discounted. If a team is willing to accept the media focus, more power to them. I simply wouldn't want it to be my team.

Didn't Clinton Portis make a similar moment when Vick was arrested.

There are many teams that would sign this guy, but I don't the Cardinals should. Character is huge & I'm not sold that this guy is contrite. Let the Raiders or Ravens sign him.

If the sister had been older than he was at the time they got it on, would she be registered a sex offender?

If they were both under the age of consent (in MD it's 16 I think) would they both then be sex offenders?

When this thread was first posted I thought, why not give him a tryout. Everyone deserves a second chance. After reading the comments though I'd suggest we pass on him. Compared to society as a whole I'd say this board is a fairly reasoned and enlightened group and almost to a person the vote has been an emphatic NO. Given that, can you imagine the field day the morality police would have with this?

I think the big problem is that this kid is never gonna live this down even if he gets picked up as UDFA and turns out to be a good player. The media would bring this up at every possible occasion and teams just dont want to deal with huge baggage that would come with this guy.
I find it hard to really take a personal stance on this. On the one im utterly disgusted by what happened and sickened at the thought that somebody would do that, but on the other hand i do believe in giving people a second chance and as the act was consensual the crime is not grievous as it would have been otherwise and as both the people involved are now leading normal lives there is an arguement to let them be.

However I think it boils down to my first point which is that it would be almost impossible for this guy to be in the limelight of the NFL without having a huge circus show follow him everywhere and because of this most teams dont want to heave that type of extra pressure on themselves and therefore i cant see him becoming a success for anybody.

If he went public with his actions and consequences to date while clearly showing regret I suspect it would become manageable but you're right, most teams would prefer to avoid the black eye in the first place. OTOH, if he had Pro Bowl potential someone (insert Raiders here) would likely give him a chance.

Before the draft, reports emerged that one of the best prospects in the pool, Tony Washington, had been convicted at age 16 of having sex with his biological sister. He spent two weeks in jail and, more importantly, is a registered sex offender.

Coincidentally (or not), the Abilene Christian tackle has been regarded as radioactive by the NFL, despite being viewed as a Day Two prospect.

But Washington wasn't drafted at all. Since Saturday, he hasn't even received an offer to sign with a team as an undrafted free agent.

"I'm in complete shock," agent Vann McElroy told Darren Rovell of CNBC. "I feel so bad for this kid. This is something that happened seven years ago and, probably because of the [Ben] Roethlisberger situation, he hasn't been called."

You feel for the kid, but at the same time eww. If Vick can get back in the league, Rapelisburger is still playing, Leanard Little got another chance, why not this guy. If he has the talent the NFL usually puts morality aside.

I've been quiet on this, because frankly I don't want to see ignorant comments directed towards me, following my statement about it. Oh well.

I don't know anything about the kid's talent level so given that caveat...

Give this guy a break! He is being treated unjustly by the NFL and by the court of public opinion, including the majority of posters on this thread. To be ostracized as he is being, and to not be considered for the NFL draft because of his error in judgement, albeit a gross miscalculation, seven years ago at the age of 16, is unduely harsh. Leonard Little and Donte Stallworth are guilty of manslaughter, as adults, and they have been less harshly judged.

It's because as much as drinking and driving is a no-no, incest has been a taboo in most societies since the dawn of time and is biological as well as societal in nature.

The voice of reason. I agree completely CL. He probably had a misguided childhood and no parental supervision. To crucify him for a mistake he made as a youngster is ridiculous.

As you say, "Give him a break!!!!!"

I think he should get a chance but with today's tabloid, blow everything out of proportion, media, i can see where an NFL team doesn't want to put up with it. You know some sleazebag writer/ newspaper would probably have a headline reading FORTY-NINERS SIGN KNOWN SEX OFFENDER.
