Not when it is for an expiring contract. It was and is functionally the same.

I don't see it that way. As has been pointed out a few times in this thread, we weren't the only team in pursuit of Brooks. If you accept that as fact, then there's plenty of reason to believe they included the pick in an effort to improve the team. When they gave away all those picks a few years back, they were clearly cost cutting moves.

If that is the case (which I certainly don't recall), then they should have passed because he wasn't worth that.

exactly... it wasn't like they were looking for the missing piece to win a title... or even become a contender. it was a desperate move to try and make the 8 seed.

That "late pick" could have been a key piece for the Suns in Marshon Brooks.

Exactly, overpaying for a bad player only makes it that much worse.

The pick is totally meaningless because the Suns botched it anyway. If they had wanted to draft Brooks they could have acquired a pick for just cash most likely to get him.

You believe Sarver is going to give cash to buy picks so he has to pay more salary?

Hmm....

... on the same note the Suns could have just waited for the Rockets to waive Brooks or watch him walk in free agency.

I understand what was 'wrong' with Dragic - in fact, I predicted that he'd regress as soon as we let Louis Amundson walk. My reasoning was that it meant the Suns FO didn't grasp that it was the second unit playing as a team that powered the team through the second half of the season - and played some good defense while they were at it. Signing Warrick - a known bad defender - corroborated it. Without a second unit that could stay on the floor, Dragic would fall back into being Nash's backup from being the leader of second unit. I have to confess I didn't expect Goran to stink as bad as he did, but I wasn't greatly surprised.

The most disheartening thing about it all was that I hoped that a unit that was having success because of its defense could introduce a cultural shift within the team. It was a faint hope because I suspected even Gentry didn't have a clue what had taken place in front of his eyes. And the rest of our motley FO doesn't even think in actual basketball terms.

The trade itself was really insignificant - with the people we have running things we aren't going anyplace with or without Dragic. I liked him and preferred we keep him but I think the change of scenery was good for him and I wish him all the best.
