I'm not sure I've ever heard of him. I don't know if that says more about him or me. :p

He signed a two-year deal as a second-round pick, so he's a UFA now. Hoopshype describes him as a shot-blocker, but his numbers with the Pacers certainly don't seem to indicate that.

I assume he'd be a minimum signing, possible training-camp fodder.

Looks like he and DerMarr would be very similar.

Jones shot 53% from 3pt in the first round of the playoffs, thats impressive.

No, he's better than that. I remember him having a few 20 point games for the Pacers and started a few games. He's also not a bad shooter and has good size. Isaiah Thomas is also apparently considering offering him and/or Diop a 3 year deal.

On a couple of the other Suns forums, they're talking about him. A lot of people are thinking it's a dumb move for the Suns to go after him, since they're signing Padgett. However, I think it would be a good pick-up for the Suns. Especially since he has a simlar game to JJ (back when he was with Boston and his first year here). That's the upside I see with him. That's probably why the Suns are interested as well.

Me and Joe brought up James Jones a couple weeks ago. I guess it takes Gambo to get people to really talk about him

He is a 6'7 athletic swingman from what I know. He did pretty well with PT when Indiana was without their core players.

James Jones was a solid SF/PF at University of Miami. He had some post-up moves and the bulk to fight around the rim and the shooting range to score from outside.
He was never a shotblocker nor a great athlete.

I have seen him less in the NBA but he seems to be a big, tough SF with an above average 3P-accuracy. He is a no-brainer for the vet min., IMO.

Edited: He had 1.8 and 2.4 BPG in his last 2 years in NCAA which is not bad at all.

I think he adds some nice youth to the team something I couldnt imagine saying last year but seeing as we are no longer a young team it could be nice to have some young talent to develop. I just hope that with all of the depth we seem to have aquired D'Antoni will figure out how to use his bench more effectively than last year, which I think cost us in the playoffs.

Maybe I'm one of the few but I remember when the Suns used to open summer league tryouts to the public before the team when off to the actual summer leagues. I used to really enjoy it until they closed it to the public (I believe it occurred about when Paul Wesphal became coach). I used to go to the workouts twice a day and watch players work their hearts out for the next step.

This is when I really became a devoted Suns fan.

I believe player tryouts are the heart and soul of the NBA. I also believe preseason workouts should be open to the public as well.

Where I'm going with this, is that I used to love finding rough gems in this process and watch them try to make the team.

Perhaps a James Jones or a Diaw is one of those gems on the rise. Who knows until the fans can watch them play. I remember when Ced Ceballos and Jeff Hornacek were long shots to make it in the NBA.

This is a very exciting part of basketball to me.

If he's that good, why hasn't Indiana just Early Birded him? Does his agent think he's going to get more, based on less than 1400 career minutes of playing time?

He's not "that good" but he isn't camp fodder either. With Granger and Fred Jones they don't need to spend money on young wing men. I think James Jones could develop into a nice 7th or 8th player on a good playoff team. That's worth something, but not doing back flips over.

Man the Suns would be loading up on 40% 3PT shooters... not sure how many the Team as a whole would make but the PCT should remain high, you think? :) Remember JJ made a lot though at that clip...

I liked Jones at Miami, he caught my eye, I believe while watching Darius Rice... his strength would be 3PT shooting but he looked like a pretty decent scorer.

He is, and I've read more than a few times that Indiana plans to match any reasonable offer. The Suns would possibly have to acquire him through a sign and trade, I think.

I would like to know how Isaiah Thomas could sign him to a three-year deal. I thought the most that could be offered with the LLE is a two-year deal. The New York Knicks used their entire mid-level exception on Jerome James.

40% FG AND 3PFG shooter along with 86% Free throw and 2 Rebounds a game off the bench? DEFINATELY sign him.

*edit, and the percentages aren't from a small amount of shots, his 2nd year in the nba and he has already put down 27 in a game, this guy can SCORE.

I think it is less than 3 years in the league and you are restricted.

The Voskuhl TE would work wouldn't it?

I don't remember ever seeing him play. Sounds like he could be a good fit with the Suns.

I've seen him play several times, but I honestly don't remember much other than him taking three-point shots. I don't remember how athletic he is or how he plays defense. If the Phoenix Suns give him much more than the minimum they must see something. He did score 27 points in one game. His next highest point total was 15 points, and then it was almost all single-digit scoring outings. This is not Ronald Murray.

IF you got the qualifying offer. I don't remember if Jones got it.

James Jones was a second-round pick. He has been in the league only two years.

It's Definitely
