After consecutive wins against the Bulls and Magic, word
around Phoenix is Johnson's Suns must be at or above the .500 mark in the next few weeks or he could be fired. Names such
as Doug Collins are already being floated around as possible replacements.
At the heart of Johnson's tenuous standing is his relationship with his superstar point guard. Johnson has been critical in the past of Marbury's tendency to dribble too much without passing

Opinions on Collins please?!?!

I don't think he would be the answer in Phoenix. He certainly didn't distinguish himself with his last stint in Washington. He hasn't accomplished enough to be fully credible as an authority figure, and he doesn't seem to be good at relating to the players.

IMO Doug Collins is being mentioned because he is currently not coaching, and he lives in the valley. I doubt there's any chance that he will be coaching the Phoenix Suns. By most accounts he did a terrible job last year in Washington with their young players. If Johnson gets fired I'll bet Ivoroni replaces him for at least the rest of the season.

Doug Collins has always been overrated. When he served as both head-coach/GM for the Pistons, he nearly set their franchise back 10-years....

We need a structured offense. Rudy T hasn't run one of those in 5 years.

Last thing we need is a coach who will let a scoring PG refuse to feed the post.

Rudy T was quite ill last season and it looked to me like he just put things on autopilot... which meant his isolation oriented offense. For the most part he coached well during his career and fit his plans to the players he had. A yeaf off might help him get back where he was. I'd hope he'd be under consideration... though that would be a huge departure for the Colangeli.

I think Doug Collins has found his niche as a color commentator. <wink, nod>

Well put. Collins will destroy Suns. Don't even let him come near this franchise...

There have been a few suggestions for a new coach and some have asked for assistant coaches around the league to be considered. I am not advocating any of the following, but a few that have come to mind are Lionel Hollins(if he is an asssistant at the moment), Del Harris, Kurt Rambis (won't, but a suggestion), and Donnie Nelson(bet he wished he never went to help his DAD). Donnie probably would have been the coach for the Suns a few years ago if he had not departed to be with his father, who seems to never want to hand over the Mav's duties to Junior.

Donnie Nelson seems like a good guy, but he is not the head coach we want if we don't like small ball.

Who was the last sucessful GM/Head coach??

Pat Riley failed

Rick Pitino failed

Don Nelson only succeeds right now because he doesn't have to care about money

Hell you might even add Jordan to this list

I guess you might be able to give Pop credit, but I don't think he technically is the GM.

There will always be a problem with Coach/GM. Coaches think short term, and don't care about cost. GMs think long term and are conscious of things like the salary cap and future payrolls.

It is nearly impossible for 1 person to incorporate both views. There is a need for both positions, it allows a compromise.

Doug Collins is too much like Scott Skiles.

I would really like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Maybe make him an assistant coach first and eventually turn the headcoach duties to him.

One of the most important qualities of coaching is being a good communicator. Kareem has never demonstrated decent communication skills. I really believe that's why no one has ever given him even a shot a coaching.

Kareem was a good player, but as a communicator, teacher, and motivator--I can't see it.

Surely you aren't talking about the same Kareem who masterfully portrayed copilot Roger Murdock in the first Airplane movie. I thought he did a great job of communicating with the pilot and navigator during that most famous scene.

"Do we have clearance Clarence?"

My point is that Doug Collins has failed in coaching younger players (besides Jordan and Pippen).... While in Detroit he had the worst relationships with the likes of Grant Hill and Allan Houston.... In Washington he seemed to have many conflicts with RIP Hamilton and Kwame Brown while with the Wizards.

Collins may have a winning record as coach, however, one must question why does he always get fired? If the Suns were to hire him, he probably would resort to his character flaws documented under this link the following is quoted directly from that aforementioned link...

No. There’s a reason Collins’ first two stops were a fast burn: He simply exhausts his players. Like a college coach, Collins fusses too much, weeps too much, over-praises good performances, over-condemns bad ones, chases off players he doesn’t like, and even alienates the ones he does—all in all, he’s an awful fit for the NBA. Still, the Bulls and Pistons would have forgiven his histrionics if Collins had done two things: developed his young players and then, just as important, kept them cheerful and focused. He sometimes did the former, but never the latter. And that’s why he’ll fail in Washington, too.

Utimately he did fail in Washington.... Imagine him in Phoenix with this youth-ladened team? He would "push all the wrong buttons", especially with Shawn and Amare.......

Who would be ideal for the Suns? I dont see too many worthwhile candidates out on the market, especially one who wouldnt command the player-personnel control that Jerry C. and Co. wouldnt be willing to compromise....
