Last time the cardinals picked at 16 they got….Zaven Collins.

I’m glad that we have Collins- he’s a great complementary piece but I really hope we bring in more of an impact player this time around
To be fair, that was an awful draft class after the blue chippers. It was the covid draft, where many players stayed in school.

Not like there are a lot of pro bowlers taken in the mid and lower 1st round. Collins is a good outcome when you look at the alternatives

Gotta disagree here. Phillips, paye, darrisaw, newsome, Rousseau and oweh have all been better at the least.

I never said Collins was the best. I said he was a good outcome compared to Leatherwood, DAvis, Toney, Farley etc. The mid to low 1st round have zero star players perhaps except Darrisaw. Getting a average starter from that group is a good outcome

The mistake in that draft was not moving up when Parsons was falling but apparently our genius scouts didn't like him.

Draft season is just springtime Lucy and the Football for the Cardinals.

early take:

a top tier of maybe 6-7 players -- none of which are a QB

and then players 8-40 all seem at the same level

I will defer to everyone's knowledge on who we should take. I know less than zero about any players outside of Sanders, Skattebo, Hunter, and Jahdae Barron.

I'm definitely all about targeting EDGE in round 1, but Luther Burden would be awfully tempting if there. He didn't have a great year stats wise, but is the best deep threat receiver in the draft.

That seems to have changed in the last two drafts

Has it?

2023 - 1st Paris Johnson Jr was an excellent pick.
2nd round - Got cute and ended up with Ojulari who is a bust. The pick they traded out of ended up being Sam LaPorta for the Lions.
3rd round - Garrett Williams excellent pick
3rd round - Michael Wilson meh
4th round - Jon Gaines - injured and then terrible
5th round - Clayton Tune - terrible
5th round - Owen Pappoe - Yuck
6th round - Kei'Trel Clark - I like him but the coaches do not.
6th round - Dante Stills - contributes so good pick

Positions drafted: OL - 2 DL - 1 WR - 1 DB - 2 LB - 2 QB - 1

I count 2 excellent picks and 1 good pick. The rest is meh to trash.

2024 - 1st Marvin Harrison Jr - Disappointing
1st - Darius Robinson - Injured and then disappointing
2nd - Max Melton - Reach who is okay but the players that were available both before the trade down and after make this a bad pick.
3rd - Trey Benson - Disappointing and then injured. Spending a 3rd rounder on a back up RB with so many needs is terrible.
3rd - Isiah Adams - Terrible.
3rd - Tip Reiman - MEGA reach. I bet he wouldn't have 50 yards receiving on the year and I was right.
3rd - Elijiah Jones - Injured
4th - Rabbit - Great pick
5th - Xavier Thomas - meh
5th - Christian Jones - meh
7th - Jaden Davis - Not a contributor

Positions drafted: WR - 1 DL - 2 DB - 4 RB - 1 OL - 2 TE - 1

Combined Talent Acquired from 20 draft picks:

QB - 1 bad back up
RB - 1 back up
WR - 2 starters but right now really they are WR 2 and WR 3
TE - extra offensive lineman
OL - 1 high quality starter and 2 back ups
DL - 3 non impact players either as back ups or starters. Stills is sort of playable.
LB - 2 back ups that don't contribute
DBs - Drafted 6. 1 excellent 1 very good and 4 back ups.

Two years ago our biggest needs were on both lines and at WR

20 picks later we have 1 quality starter to address those needs and a lot of hope for Marvin Harrison Jr.

I wouldn't complain about any of the EDGE guys if we drafted one at #16. But, damn, if either Grant or Graham from Michigan are there I really want one of those two DTs.

What we do in free agency will influence the draft obviously and everything could change a lot. But, right now, I think we are in a terrific draft and in a great spot to address our two biggest needs in the first two rounds. This is a very deep draft at DT and EDGE

I would try to get a ILB in free agency. This is not a great draft at that position. Not sure who will be available in free agency but surely we can get better than Kyzir.

Except he’s not a deep threat. He’s more of a YAC guy.

If there’s an equal caliber OL/DL at 16 I’m going OL.
Uh, whatever for? All things being equal, only a Steve Keim goes OL at 16. Okay, he'd probably go midget speed receiver, but the point stands. This team is desperate for interior DL skill and already has starting level players at the OT spots. Unless you're advocating going guard or center at #16?

It’s not a terrible plan to come back with those two, Robinson, and Collier. If you believed in them last year, what has really changed?
That is Keim level planning. How are we getting interior pressure on the QB? I dunno, let's run it back and hope. So, blind hope. Hopium is the plan. Got it.

In case you missed it, yes, this would be a terrible, terrible plan. C'mon. You're better than this.

I was trying to illustrate half of the players taken after him are better. I'll quote you directly this time to avoid confusion, he is not "a good outcome" just because he was not literally the worst pick. We picked an off ball linebacker in the first round for the *second year in a row* when there were better players at much more important positions. It's a bad pick then and is a worse pick now after seeing how the rest of the guys in the first round panned out.

It's way too early to assess the 2024 draft. Did you watch Isaiah Adams and Christian Jones at guard and tackle yesterday? Both were solid and could be the future right side of our O-line. Reiman is a very good blocking TE and Trey Benson showed some potential at RB. Throw in MHJ and you have the makings of a very good draft, and we're just talking about the offensive side.

There's two more starters on defense in Max Melton and D-Robb, while DTD also shows the potential to be future starter. Again, it's way too early to judge the 2024 draft, but my money says it's going to turn out to be one hell of a good draft.

As for the 2023 draft, we netted 3 starters in PJJ, Garrett Williams and Michael Wilson, and I've always believed that if you can get 3 starters from a draft, then it's a good draft.

I really don't know how anyone can be critical of Monti's first two drafts at this point.

Now free agency, that's another story.

Totally fair take - Adam’s is a beef cake, loved seeing him and jones getting some playing time yesterday

Yeah I like Deone Walker out of Kentucky..big boy at 6'6" and 348..we might find him on the board in the second, he had a bit of a down year this year...but pulled 8 sacks last season.
James Pearce in one then Walker in two would set our defense up with a ton of potential
Deone Walker in round 2 would be huge.

While his height probably keeps him from being a consistently outside receiver and YAC will probably always be his bread and butter, he's got the speed and athleticism to be a legit deep threat.

Being a major big play weapon out of the slot (along with McBride) inside with MHJ and Wilson on the outside could make for a potentially explosive offense. We definitely have bigger needs, but like I said I do find this to be a potentially tantalizing option if he's on the board.

For the people who don’t follow the draft year around. When I say EDGE or DL at 16, it’s not because those are team needs, it’s because that is where the need and player talent align.
