To correct you, he was NOT comparing the two, but, instead condemning the fact that black people WERE cheering that when two people were left dead.
I don't want to sidetrack the thread but the word compare does not mean that someone is saying 2 things are the same or similar. It's taking 2 things and examining them to note similarities
or differences.
That's what Irvin was doing, he was comparing the last time in his opinion that black Americans were celebrating like this and in his opinion it was after OJ was acquitted. Yes he did seem to be saying he didn't think that was a good thing(as I mentioned he said I mean 2 people died), but he was absolutely comparing the two. I think his point was this is how far we've come we went from celebrating OJ being acquitted (a bad thing to most) to now Obama winning.
That's what made it weird and both Mike's on the show agreed that while they respected Mike's opinion they could not really really relate to it because they're white. It was really apparent from the look on Greeny's face when he was listening to Irvin(he was on the phone not in the studio) that he had no idea where Irvin was going when he brought up OJ and he was actually a bit concerned that this was going to go badly. It didn't, but it was just a very odd way of making the point of how happy he was about the election result.
My point being, irvin's earlier comment on the cards was similarly weird, he didn't seem at all interested in the current season he simply said he had no faith in Arizona because they are Arizona. That's like saying SF will win the Superbowl because well they've won it several times before.
