Official Draft Ryan Mallet Thread

Assuming Andrew Luck is gone, I would be fine if the Cards drafted Ryan Mallet, QB, Arkansas, in the first round.

For some reasom, I'm starting to like him. I don't think anyone can question his talent. He's completing over 65% of his passes at a high YPA , so it's not like he's dink and dunking it. And he's playing in the SEC so you can't really question his level of competition. The big question is his mental makeup. I can see alot of similarities to Ben R. They're both big guys that can make all the throws and have the arm to play in Whiz's offense. I think are mistaken when they try and compare Mallet to DA. The only similarity is their size. DA has never completed a high % of passes, even in college. In the last 2 years he has thrown 60 TD's to only 18 int's at over 9 yards per attempt.

Yet here's a scouting report to scare anyone away from himespecially at the bottom). Granted this was prior to theseason and this site now has him projected to the Cards at 6.

Footwork needs a lot of polish
Lacks some balance as a passer

Poor NFL QB pedigree (Bobby Petrino)
Needs a lot of space and minimal pass rush in pocket to operate
Back foot comes up too much on follow through, which hurts accuracy and balance
Character concerns

Summary: Ryan Mallett is getting overrated at this point because everyone is in love with his size and arm strength. However, there isn't much I saw on tape to give Mallett a first-round grade unless he improves greatly in 2010.

Mallett is a very inconsistent quarterback and an extremely raw talent. Plus, let's also factor in Bobby Petrino's poor history of sending quarterbacks to the NFL (Dave Ragone, Stefan LeFors, Chris Redman, Brian Brohm). Something about Petrino's system either doesn't prepare them for the NFL because the receivers are wide open thanks to great route combinations and play calling, or he just finds a way to mask the talent level (not a problem with Mallett).

Mallett is starting the season with a third-round grade in my book with a second-round projection because I think some team will overdraft him due to his immense upside. Maybe Mallett improves next season, but that would just be me giving him the benefit of the doubt, which I rarely do for prospects.

Player Comparison: Derek Anderson. Anderson has the size and the arm, but like Mallett, he is a bad athlete with poor accuracy.

Did you get that scouting report from Walter Football? I used to enjoy reading them but recently they have become crap. It probably started when they got a Jimmy Clausen interview and continued to suck up to him the rest of the year. They are partial to certain players and do not look at things objectively any more.

The Cards should have their pick of at least 2 of Luck, Mallet, Locker, and Newton when it comes time to select their pick. The Cards should pick whichever they like least, seriously.

Yep, that's where it's from. I agree they used to be alot better but now they just try to be funny and it's not working.The thing that's good about them is they have a ton of info on players.

I'm put off by the critics' concerns over footwork. We've seen what that can do to a passer in the NFL. Maybe it can be corrected, but my gut is that with these big guys it's harder to do.

I don't have disdain for him or anything, I'm just a little leery.
