Calling it now..

Clowney for a 4th
I would be okay with that. Clowney is a good edge defender. Even on an absolutely horrible Panthers defense he still have an okay pass rush win rate, and he ranks #1 among all edge rushers in run stop win rate according to ESPN’s metric. And he is only one year removed from a very good season (he ended tied with T.J. Watt for 4th best in the same pass rush metric).

Too much. A 6th

The reason I think it would take a 4th is his contract. Clowney is under contract for another season and the rest of this season would be for peanuts and then roughly 8.8M for next season.

For a solid starting DE, that is cheap

we need to get a pass rush and we need to release prater if it's anyway beneficial to our cause - can we trade prater - probably not?

Monti has shown a desire to avoid adding established NFL players who can actually contribute. He prefers adding those that do little and then get injured.
I think he’s been very honest and consistent about putting character at the forefront. I think he would prefer a younger cheaper player to mold and doesn’t want to risk big money on someone who he isn’t positive checks all the boxes. Additionally, top tier players who do are rarely available and/or require significant compensation either to them as FA’s or to their current teams via trade.

Hope MO isn’t looking at the 6 sacks today against the Bears and feels good where we are. Up until today we couldn’t put pressure on anyone. Trade for an edge and hope Robinson comes back next week or after the bye. Like getting two upgrades

Today's sacks were solely the product of Rallis frequently blitzing a rookie QB behind an offensive line that isn't very good.
We try that same attack against the Jets and Rodgers throws for 6 or 7 touchdowns
