I believe that after a certain point a player regresses at AAA if he isn't promoted. Once he has mastered AAA pitching, playing all the time at AAA isn't going to teach him anything. The few at bats he might get as a bench player in the majors are more educational and further his career. Plus...

Figgy will always be a fringe major leaguer. Not sure who he is playing with this year. He was with the Pirates last year. Very nice guy, but marginal talent. He'll be back and forth between AAA and the majors for most of his career. Padilla, OTOH, should have a very long and successful major...

    Brenly is Insane

I see nothing wrong with Brenly saying nice things about a young player. That's one of the things that Brenly has always done best, which is nurturing the kids and making them feel confident in themselves. Praise is a good thing. While fans might appreciate honesty from a manager, I could...

Well, I said way back when that it was mistake. But it wasn't that the D-Backs "let" Miggy go. If they had the money I imagine they would have liked him. They were under salary constraints and they insisted in their own minds that the only player not under contract that they were willing to pay...

    John Patterson <cough, cough>

    Is Brenly in trouble?

But that is, as AZZenny notes, precisely the problem. Nobody should have expected Randy Johnson to be the Randy Johnson of old. Not at his age and not coming off the surgery. The D-Backs also "expected" Shayne Reynolds to be the Reynolds of three years ago and Robby Alomar to be teh Alomar of...

    Luis Terrero

It never made any sense to me in the first place that they kept Donnie Sadler and not Terrero or Tracy.

Fish or cut bait. The D-Backs want to rebuild and remain "respectable". That the NL West is regressing this year makes them believe they can compete for the NL west crown. This usually results in teams using mediocre to above mediocre (but not good) players. Too many signings of mediocre...

    Gonzo's throwing arm........and my thoughts

I still would not be surprised if they don't trade with the Twins for Jacque Jones soon. I think it needs to be proven that Mantei is healthy and if that happens the trigger will be pulled.

    In SI's baseball edition

Webb's issue will be control. He has to be able to throw his sinker for some strikes, as well as the one that dives way out of the strike zone. If not, they will never swing. He gets the strike outs and the weak grounders by having them thing it is a strike and then it sinks out of the zone.

    Your 2004 Arizona Diamondbacks?

Is Randy Choate in the bullpen? I haven't seen the complete roster yet? Never mind. I checked the D-Backs site and it lists the 25 man roster: 25 man roster

Who should make the 25 man roster???

If only Sadler could hit. I'd rather have the plus offense that Tracy provides with the bat than a guy who never gets on base except as a pinch runner for someone else.

    Shane Reynolds looks horrible

Turner Field is pretty much a neutral, to even slightly pitchers park. Turner certainly didn't inflate his numbers. All parks in the NL east but Montreal favor pitchers. If anything, the three pitchers parks in the NL East, given the unbalanced schedule, probably deceptively deflated his road...

    Who's on 2nd?

Shea Hillenbrand is a waste of 25 man roster space. Can't wait until he is gone. He does nothing for me. Hands of stone and a horrible hacker. Yuck.

    Shane Reynolds looks horrible

I'd even be able to accept the "trying things out" excuse if Reynolds had been decent in the prior couple of years. But when you're 36 and you royally sucked last year, when you royally suck in spring training it's a pretty good bet that you are going to suck that season.

Is this where I get to say "I told you so"?

    Patterson Dealt

ummmmmm, I have seen Choate pitch and he defines the world totally fungible reliever. If he wasn't a lefty he'd be out of baseball. IP/ERA's 2000 - 17/4.77 2001 - 48.13.35 2002 - 22.2/6.05 2003 - 3.2/7.36 The reason he only pitched 3.2 innings last year was because the Yankees optioned...

    Your 2004 Arizona Diamondbacks?

I don't think he's been eliminated. Here's how the roster shapes up I think. Pitchers - 11 line-up - 8 catcher Sexson Alomar Cintron Hillenbrand Bautista Finley Gonzalez Bench - 6 back-up catcher Colbrunn (IF) Baerga (IF) Kata (IF) OF OF I think there is room for two...

    Feel good about this season

Old age means that you have had a lot of years of listening to a team's "spin" about how exciting or competitive the team is going to be this year. After years of hearing that and then watching "dreck" you learn to take it all with a grain of salt.
  20. S

    Shane Reynolds looks horrible

That's what I said last fall and why I didn't like Sparks or Reynolds. The D-Backs have a lot of young pitching talent. No sense wasting roster spots on total has-beens when the team is cutting salary and going with a youth movement.

    Before feeling good....

Watched Sexson the past three days - I am a complete convert. I was most unhappy about the trade and came in with a negative bias (not as bad as the drunk broad yelling insults at him at TEP the other day...), but 3 HR in two games, very solid defense (yes, yes, we were saying "Sexson would have...

Yankees lose Sheffield up to 3 months

Shane Spencer signed a minor league deal with the Mets. In fact he and Karim Garcia got into an altercation with a local or some such thing down in spring training the other day.

I Can't believe what Bickley just said about Schilling

Several years ago, one of our columnists in Philly accused Curt of being a Nazi sympathizer for collecting his WWII memorabilia. I didn't see the TV segment, but he got some strange stares out of the other reporters. Curt collects everything. If all he collected was Nazi stuff, one could...

Here is a pic of Jason Giambi as he looked reporting to spring training this week. Looks like his rookie card.
