    James Cameron's Avatar

Five big fat gigantic stars -- and that was at Cine Capri, big screen but not 3-D. What a wonderful movie -- classic film and fiction mythologies all converged and in nice balance: great action flick, charming romance with an ominous shadow of tragedy, every variation on David and Goliath...

    The Prisoner (remake) (AMC)

Review on NPR yesterday said that if you were a fan of the original, don't waste your time on this one. They diluted everything that made it so interesting and so Orwellian.

    rebuffering hassles

When I'm playing music video or heavy audio stuff on youtube, it pauses to rebuffer every 10-20 seconds -- it doesn't do it on my other computer, but always does on this one (which is newer and supposedly faster). Where should I even begin to look for troubleshooting? Thanks

    District 9

What an unusual movie. Just saw it, and I liked it a lot -- 7.5 or 8/10. And yes, went out for shrimp tempura afterwards.

    Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds

I thought it was great -- the first part showed that QT is a versatile, fine director; it was as real and tragic as anyone could have made it -- and then he kicks into overdrive. It was visually splendid, well-written, hysterically funny, with a harshly political message, and the acting was...

    Julie & Julia

Saw this last night, and it is a truly charming movie; well-written, exceptionally acted, and smoothly directed, and a foodie's joy. It is based on two true stories. A thirty-ish woman realizes, when she and her husband move into a clunky apartment in Queens to be near his work, that her life...

    Poster-making software?

eh, it needs to be done on super high-res vector whatchamijiggy I've been advised. The poster is six feet by 2.25 feet -- weird size.

    Battery damage question

I have a label-maker and when it wouldn't turn on, I opened it up to change the batteries -- and one of the batteries had exuded that chalky white stuff all over at one end. I can scrape the deposit off pretty well, but my Q is whether it will then be OK to reinstall batteries and use it, or is...

    Poster-making software?

I need to design and print an important poster for a scientific conference, and it's big, odd-sized (the size of a narrow door, basically), and I need a lot of flexibility. But has to be easy - I don't want to have to spend a day learning how to use the software. That's why I am not up for...

Good solid rainstorm here in N Scottsdale, around 3/4 inch of rain and some tremendous winds, just around midnight last night. Finally.

Camcorders, Digital Cameras and Computers - Oh my!

I'll be interested to hear down the road, because man, they are pretty machines! I was after the lightest-weight small traveler I could get, and it was a Sony or the Toshiba Portege (which I love).

Camcorders, Digital Cameras and Computers - Oh my!

I've heard from several people that Sony's durability is a problem, because that's what I was looking at prior to getting my tiny Toshiba. One repair guy said 'They're gorgeous, and a lot of my customers buy one Sony. Never had anyone buy a second one.'

Camcorders, Digital Cameras and Computers - Oh my!

Nikon D-90. I've got the D-80, my daughter got the D-90, and it is much user-friendlier. Spectacular cameras. I get my desktops locally, put together by a very responsible firm my computer guy swears by and has used for years -- but I'll have to dig up the name. Paired with a Samsung monitor...

    Wine

OK, time to resurrect this thread. A couple of really nice, reasonable Chardonnays: Columbia Crest Grand Estates (2007 if you can find it) -- under $7 at CostCo. I like the Gr.Est. better than the more expensive CC Horse Heaven Hills or whatever the name is. My new absolute favorite...

    The Hurt Locker

Most of it was so perfectly written, and flawlessly directed and acted, that I think that's why the one or two suddenly cardboard-Hollywood scenes stood out like sore thumbs. I also wanted to say -- there is blood and gore galore, and there are things and people blowing up and being shot at...

Israel reaches first Davis Cup semifinal (AP)

Well, congrats to the Israelis. I know the road to this point has been tough for them at times.

    The Hurt Locker

Saw it with 4 friends this evening. I'd give it 4.75 stars -- there are one or two very brief scenes that (to me) clunked, in an otherwise extremely well-done, very intense, high-stakes-all-the-time flick. One review said 'In twenty years, people may turn to this movie to better understand...

Vote for Mark Reynolds for the final spot.

I just tossed in a couple dozen. He's not out of the running, so keep it up. We have until Thursday.

    Public Enemies

I agree with you azsportsfan01 -- good but by no means great. Needed much tighter editing. Johnny Depp was outstanding, Billy Cruddup makes a really slimy early Hoover and we also wondered why there hasn't been a movie about him.

    Public Enemies

Heard a review somewhat like Chap's -- that it's too stylized, basically, but Depp is great. I'm going to see it this afternoon with a couple friends.
