Jackman Turns Down Bond
Source: The Age, Dark Horizons
August 14, 2005

Our Aussie pals at Dark Horizons have turned us on to a story in the latest issue of the Melbourne based newspaper, The Age, which reports that Hugh "Wolverine" Jackman has turned down the opportunity to play Agent 007, James Bond, in the next three films.

He would only have been the second Australian to play the prestigious part after George Lazenby, who only appeared in one Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service back in 1969. According to The Age, Jackman, who was reportedly the frontrunner for the role, turned it down after talking with wife Deborah-Lee Furness, because he didn't feel that he needed to play Bond in order to boost his already high profile career.

Pierce Brosnan out as James Bond, 007

Associated Press
Aug. 17, 2005 10:10 AM

NEW YORK - A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

"I thought. ... I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation."

Brosnan says he's grateful to have had the role, but adds: "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners - which I loathed - and I always felt phony doing them."

He plays a foulmouthed, skirt-chasing hit man in the upcoming film "The Matador."

"(For this) to come on the heels of my departure from the world of Bond is sweet grace, to play this one as a farewell to that chapter in time - it certainly wasn't planned."

This farce is becoming almost comical. Who's choosing the actors, the Atlanta Hawks?

ER Star Goran Visnjic Up for 007
Source: TV Guide
August 25, 2005

TV Guide's Ausiello has confirmed internet rumors that ER star Goran Visnjic is one of the contenders for the role of 007 in Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond film which Sony is planning on releasing October 19, 2006.

Yes, it's true. But should he get the role, it wouldn't mean the end of Kovac. "We have a contingency plan," says exec producer David Zabel. "We would film a bunch of stuff [with Kovac] at one time for later episodes. Or, depending on where the Bond film was shooting, he might be able to work on both at the same time. That's what [George] Clooney did. He was shooting Batman & Robin for part of the day and ER the other part."

Goldeneye director Martin Campbell is back in the director's chair. Visnjic also recently starred in the Elektra movie and USA's Spartacus.

I can't see Goran as Bond. Is it just me?

The fact that he isn't British isn't a problem? (I guess it wouldn't, since Hugh Jackman is Austrailian)

I have only watched one James Bond movie in its entirety (on a date in high school). However if hot Dr. Kovach is the new James Bond then I will become an instant fan (and see if I can't get a part as a Bond girl ... um, yeah right, lol)!!!

It's James Blond
By Nicole Lampert, Daily Mail, Showbusiness Editor
11 October 2005

He has just proved his ladykilling credentials by seducing Sienna Miller from under the nose of his friend, Jude Law.

Now Daniel Craig is about to become the biggest seducer of all - Ian Fleming's James Bond. The actor, who found fame as Geordie in the BBC series Our Friends in the North in 1996, got the job after an 18-month mission to replace Pierce Brosnan.

Scores of others, including Law himself, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell and Orlando Bloom, were considered but rejected.

In the end a shortlist of two emerged - Craig and newcomer Henry Cavill. The pair were auditioned again and tried on tuxedos to see how they would look in the quintessential Bond clothing.

Craig, 37, whose choice will be confirmed by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson later this week, will be the sixth Bond, but the first blond.

He will star in the 21st Bond film, based on Ian Fleming's first book Casino Royale.

Craig has said he does not like the fact that the films are more about gadgets than feelings. He added: 'It's a big machine and it makes a lot of money - so why would you change something that makes a lot of money?'

Sony to Announce the New 007 on Friday
Source: Reuters October 13, 2005

Sony Pictures Entertainment said Wednesday that the studio will announce the actor who will play James Bond in director Martin Campbell's Casino Royale on Friday, October 14, at a news conference in London.

Reuters says no further details were disclosed, and the mystery remains over who will star in the film franchise that has grossed nearly $4 billion at global box offices since the first Bond film, Dr. No, hit the silver screen in 1962.

Reports in London have identified English actor Daniel Craig, who recently starred in Layer Cake, as the new Bond, but that could not be confirmed.

The new actor will succeed Pierce Brosnan, who first played 007 in 1995's GoldenEye, also directed by Campbell, and ended his run with 2002's Die Another Day. Four others have portrayed James Bond, including Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.

Casino Royale is scheduled to begin production in January for an October 19, 2006 release.

Daniel Craig Unveiled As New James Bond
Friday October 14, 2005

Blond. James Blond.

Daniel Craig, a 37-year-old, sandy-haired Englishman was introduced Friday as the new James Bond, ending months of speculation.

His selection was revealed as he was whisked down the Thames River aboard a military Rigid Raider boat to a news conference.

Craig replaces Pierce Brosnan in the role of the suave spy in "Casino Royale," due in theaters next year.

"It is a huge iconic figure in movie history, and those things don't come along very often," the star said, after posing for photos with producer Barbara Broccoli and director Martin Campbell.

Craig revealed he only discovered on Monday that he had definitely been given the role and had to consider the offer.

"It was difficult, but I tried to think about it like any other job. We have got an incredible script, and that is my first line of attack. Once I had read it, I knew I did not have any choice," he said. "It is a huge challenge, and I think life is about challenges."

The film's producers tried to keep their decision secret, but Craig's mother told the tabloid Sun newspaper she was "thrilled to bits."

Craig is the first blond actor and only the second Englishman to star as Agent 007 in the movie series. (Roger Moore played Bond in seven films from 1973-85.)

Relatively unknown outside Britain, Craig appeared in the landmark 1990s British TV drama "Our Friends in the North" and in films including "The Mother," "Enduring Love" and "Layer Cake."

He played Paul Newman's sinister son in "Road to Perdition," was poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow's Sylvia Plath in "Sylvia" and starred in this year's thriller "The Jacket" with Adrien Brody.

Craig is also the tabloids' dream Bond. He once dated headline-grabbing model Kate Moss and has been linked to Sienna Miller, his "Layer Cake" co-star and on-off fiancee of Jude Law.

Producers announced last year that a replacement was being sought for Brosnan, who played Bond in the last four films.

"Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role," Broccoli and Campbell said in a statement.

Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, originally published in 1953, "Casino Royale" is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers.

Before Friday, speculation about the new Bond also included British actors Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler and Ewan McGregor, Irishman Colin Farrell and Australians Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.

"I am looking most forward to actually starting getting on with it, and feeling intimidated about pretty much everything," Craig said. "It is a sort of responsibility, but it is also a huge adventure. I want to get as much out of it as I can."

Campbell said the movie would be "tougher and grittier" with "more character and less gadgets." He said the story would begin with Bond first becoming a "00" agent.

"It is really the arc in which he becomes Bond," Campbell said. "He starts out just having earned his double-0 stripes and comes out at the end the Bond we know and love."

They considered Ewan McGregor as Bond? What the hell? He makes a great Obi Wan, but he's no James Bond!

Lee defends Bond newcomer Craig

Actor Christopher Lee has called on critics to give new James Bond star Daniel Craig a chance to fit the role.

Former Bond villain Lee said Craig, who will play 007 in the forthcoming Casino Royale, had already been "condemned" by the media.

"People should not pass judgment until they have seen the film," said Lee.

Lee, who was Scaramanga in 1973's The Man with the Golden Gun, added that Pierce Brosnan had been "the closest" to Bond author Ian Fleming's creation.

Speaking at the Bangkok International Film Festival, Lee defended Craig against media claims he is unsuitable for the lead role as the suave secret agent.

"There's been a lot of nonsense written about him being James Blonde," Lee said.

Media criticism

Craig, 37, is currently filming Casino Royale in the Czech Republic.

He was labelled "James Bland" by one newspaper following his response to questioning at his debut press conference last October.

Lee, 83, a distant cousin of 007 creator Fleming, said: "Pierce Brosnan is by far the best and the closest to the character that Ian invented."

Lee was recently named as the most marketable star in the world in a USA Today newspaper poll after three of the films he appeared in grossed $640m in 2005.

In the new Bond outing, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will play the hero's nemesis, Le Chiffre, while 25-year-old French actress Eva Green will play femme fatale Vesper Lynd.

The most recent Bond film, Die Another Day, saw Pierce Brosnan paired with Halle Berry and took more than $425m worldwide after its release in 2002.

If anyone has ever seen Layer Cake, Craig shows that he can at least handle the character. I'm interested in seeing how he does.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, and Lee just bolsters that opinion. And Lee is spot-on about Brosnan, especially in the last film. Bond is an aging guy who isn't quite as suave, and isn't quite as good, as he's usually portrayed.

Craig can't drive Bond car

2/23/2006

James Bond star Daniel Craig has stunned movie bosses on the set of the new 007 movie, by revealing he can't drive the secret agent's hi-tech car.

Craig - who was signed to replace former Bond Pierce Brosnan last October - is only qualified to drive an automatic transmission vehicle, so was useless behind the wheel of Bond's manual Aston Martin DB5.

According to sources, filming has been halted while the actor learns to drive the car, which had been specially shipped to the Bahamas set.
