– I have said for months that Nolen was not a realistic pick, so I obviously stand corrected.
– However, I do doubt about the scheme fit, since they already have a lot of sub-300 pounds 4i-players on the d-line.
– Right when the pick was made, I smiled, because I knew that many of you have wanted them to select Nolen for a long time. Congratulations. I am truly happy for you.
– Interesting to hear one of the analysts (Bruce Feldman) talk about how some of the Cardinals coaches have very good connections to Pete Golding – the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss. They probably gave him a call.
– What does this mean to Darius Robinson? I assume he will be moved to edge in base defense (which, by the way, was the position that made him skyrocket in draft rankings from his junior- to senior year).
– Every year I get a kick out of some fans’ ignorance (sorry, I couldn’t find a better word) about how teams build their draft boards, and because of that, call picks either steals or reaches. Shockingly, teams do in fact not use Mel Kiper’s or Daniel Jeremiah’s boards. And don’t take my word for it. For example, listen to the CBS-podcast with Dane Brugler and Daniel Jeremiah where they say exactly that. “Don’t trust our boards with each individual pick.”
– A super-talented DT with maturity issues from Ole Miss? I have PTSD from the Nkemdiche experiment.
– It is exciting to hear Gannon talk about Nolen’s fit in the system. He obviously has a clear plan for him, and because of that, Nolen can become a superstar. He really has that potential.
– Ironically (in a bad way) that they would have picked #11 if they had lost the last game to the Niners, and at that spot they could have gotten my favorite pick for them – Mykel Williams. Instead, the Niners picked #11, and chose Mykel Williams.
– Like I have said for months, this team need stars. The players that tip games from a close loss to a close win. Thus, I want them to trade up after one of the potential superstar edges, be it Nic Scourton, Donovan Ezeiuraku, or Mike Green. Those guys can be double digit sack guys with a loaded defensive line. Actually, I could see Green being their primary choice, just because of his playing style. You could call him “the Walter Nolen of edge rushers,” as they both play extremely aggressive and violent. Gannon have talked about how he is drawn to those players, and in their press conference last night he called Nolen a “1000% Cardinals player” because of his game tape.
Another option for a potentially great edge rusher is to offer a fourth-round pick for Kayvon Thibodeaux. He does have great potential, but the Giants obviously just selected Abdul Carter. I would even be interested in a third-round pick. Don’t know if I would do it, don’t know if I would not do it.
