12 picks, 10 pitchers. I think that says something about our perceived needs. :)

Another Pitcher....

RHP Daniel Fournier - Franklin Pierce College
Fourner Boasts A Plus Curve
5:57 p.m.: Franklin Pierce righthander Daniel Fourner, an 11th-round pick of the Diamondbacks, struck out 88 batters in 62 innings thanks to an above-average 76-77 mph curveball. Fellow Franklin Pierce righty Shane Presutti, who gave up four earned runs in two innings of relief in a loss to Tampa in the Division II national championship round, was nabbed in the 12th by the A's.

I really like the Brett Anderson pick. It will prob take a lot to sign him but I think Byrnes and company can get it done. I'm assuming he's going to play for Oklahoma St. but I may be wrong. I read a USA Today article about him and his dad about a month ago and he seems to be the real deal. Plus, we can use all the stud LHP's we can get!

From ESPN.com First Round Draft Summary-

First guy to the trainer's room
Max Scherzer
, selected 11th by the Diamondbacks: Scherzer, a right-hander from Missouri, missed four starts due to two bouts of shoulder tendinitis this spring. While he threw well in his outing over the weekend in the NCAA regionals, one start does not a healthy arm make. Shoulder problems are the most serious medical issue a pitcher can face. In scouting director Mike Rizzo 's defense, Scherzer would have been one of the top two or three college arms in the draft if he had been healthy all spring. So if the tendinitis turns out to be nothing, this pick could be a steal.

Thats a fair analysis. His arm issues ar troubling but I'm holding hope that the tendinitis will go away. He throws extremely hard with good control and has tremendous experience. You don't play for Team USA unless your the real deal. Lets hope Rizzo and Company monitor him very carefully and make sure he stays healthy

Little blurb from BA

Q: Dan from Chandler AZ asks:
Talk about the Dbacks Draft. Obviously they went heavy on pitching. Good Selections??? Thanks for the chat
A:

John Manuel: Hey everyone . . . let's dive in because it's been an exhausting day. The Diamondbacks once again come out looking good on the draft's first day. Their first four picks were pitchers I'm fond of in Max Scherzer (who, when healthy, is as good as any pitcher in the draft); a power arm in Brooks Brown, who needs to get his mechanics straightened out but at the very least can be a productive reliever; Brett Anderson, a steal in the second round as a three-pitch lefty with a knack for the strike zone and plenty of polish; and Dallas Buck, a warrior who will be a huge steal if his stuff ever returns to 2005 form. So yeah, I think they've done well. I also am a Hector Ambriz apologist, I just like two-way guys who seem to get better when they focus on pitching.

I don't really understand why we are drafting so many outfielders unless we are planning on not signing a few. During the second day I would like to see a team draft High Schoolers who have fallen because of strong commitments and CC guys. The reason for this is the possibility of signing them as a draft and follow player. However, this does not seem much like Rizzo's style as we did not sign any draft-and-follows from last year.
