#1 - I included every single bonus that I could think of, Including rosters bonuses that have yet to be earned and a few others that I was not sure if they reached their escalator yet or not(havent been able to get a straight answer on what they had to do to get their escalator so I just included them anyways).

#3 - For those wondering about when players contracts end check out this thanks to Darren Urban.

http://azcardinals.com/nm_files/RosterChart2007.pdf

Awesome !! Out of that list cut Bertrand Berry, Marcel Ship, Terrance Holt, and Oliver Ross. Restructure Fitz and sign Karlos Dansby, and Calvin Pace to long term deals.

My own opinions to start this thing off -

1. Priority #1 is to get Fitz extended. His 10 Mill or so bonuses really hurt us. Although we still have enough to get some nice things done this offseason, if we are smart with the contract structures this offseason.

2. Putting the 8 Mill or so franchise tag on Dansby will lower our possibilites, not shut it down but lower it. Priority #2.

3. Holt is on there and will most likely get cut giving us 3.5 Mill more, which will more then pay for the draft picks especially picking at #16. So don't even worry about taking our draft cap away from the current cap space available because it is already accounted for.

4. There are some guys that are making way to much money on this team. Ross, Shipp, Berry, James(hate to say it), Terrelle Smith, and even Gandy becuase of his big roster bonus to be due.

Its shocking that Marcel Shipp is the 18th highest cap figure on the team

I like the guy, but that is too high.

I tried to get this done before this weekend because I am going to be out of town for a little over a month training for a new job. So although I put it up earlier then I thought I was going to I will not have the time to update it like I want to from now till about a week into free agency.

Probably got up there just from longevity. He and AWilson have the longest tenure with the team.

Interesting that of the top 13, eight are guys the Cards signed as free agents.

As much as I've criticized Wells, he's quite a bargain.

$10.4M tied up in Okeafor and Berry. That needs to change. As much as I like what both players have brought to the team $5M each is too much.

Ross $3,500,000 and Gandy $6,800,000 ...... Those contracts need to be eliminated/redone.

thanks Joeshmo for all of your great work. This should keep us busy for the next three months.

Gandy's contract really stands out. $6.8M He needs to be cut before that roster bonus is due. I guess we can re-sign but is not worth $6.8M

Thanks Joeshmo for the excellent work. Can we make this a sticky for the next several months? We certainly will be referring to it.

Below are the moves I'd like to see made with estimated cap implications (let me know if you see those differently) listed.

NAME BASE BONUS TOTAL
Larry Fitz $14,592,500 $2,700,000 $17,292,500
re-work save-10mil
Edge James $5,000,000 $1,750,000 $6,750,000
Cut Save- 3.25mil
Berry Bertrand $4,000,000 $1,000,000 $5,000,000
Cut Save- 4mil
Holt, Terrance $2,000,000 $1,500,000 $3,500,000
Cut Save- 3.5 mil
Oliver Ross $2,800,000 $700,000 $3,500,000
Cut/re-work Save- 2.1mil
Shipp, Marcel $1,750,000 $500,000 $2,250,000
Cut Save-1.25mil
Gandy, Mike $3,500,000 $3,300,000 $6,800,000
cut/re-work Save-3mil

With the moves listed above we'd save 28.1 mil on top of the 14.5 we have available. Being 42.6 mil under the cap, lets assume Dansby and Pace cost 10 mil next year...we'd be 32.6mil under the capand 30 mil under after rookies; things are shaping up better than I thought! If this is the case I'd keep Edge on the roster to split carries with someone. Dare I say...nice work Rod!

I wonder if James would take a restructure to stay here? I doubt it.

Wouldn't Holt only be a 0.5 Mill savings if those numbers are right?

Holt has a Roster bonus due Feb 1st. It won't count against the cap, if he is cut by then.

Correct that 1.5 is a roster bonus due later on. He hasnt earned it yet. Thus we are not on the hook for it if he is cut before the bonus is due.

Kudos to Mr. Graves for the foresight, is it the same situation with Gandy and other players signed last offseason?

Weird question. If a player plays a duel positions, say TE and WR, and a team wanted to screw him out of some money, could they switch him to just a TE at the end of the season knowing they were going to franchise him, pay him TE money and then switch him back to WR when the season starts?

It would be up to the league office in an arbitration process. It happened to Redding last year for the Lions who was playing both DT and DE. League ruled that Redding should be paid as a DE since he primaraly played DE before that season and played about half DE that season.

Joe--you should check out Somer's blog for today. It marks the difference between the "exclusive rights" franchise tag number (which I think is the one above) and the "non-exclusive designation." It's an interesting point, because if the Cards give the exclusive rights number, the 2008 top-five average is the one that will be used for Dansby's salary (should he not get an extension). That would include whatever salary that Lance Briggs gets whenever he signs a new deal or DeMarrio Williams (perhaps) if he gets a big contract.

Those numbers are for the non exculsive rights designation. Sommers estimates were wrong. I think he was using estimates base on the 2006 non exculsive tag whihc would be a mistake since these things fluxuate way to often from year to year.

Top LB salaries in 2007 -

Lewis, Ray $ 9,428,571
Thomas, Zach $ 7,987,000
Brooking, Keith $ 7,942,226
Barnett, Nick $ 7,683,571
Bulluck, Keith $ 7,610,948

Equalls 8.13 Mill average then take out the bonuses those 5 LB received that dont count for franchise tag purposes such as the smaller workout bonuses and other really small bonuses such as that and the amount is 8.065 Mill.
