Those numbers are for the non exculsive rights designation. Sommers estimates were wrong. I think he was using estimates base on the 2006 non exculsive tag whihc would be a mistake since these things fluxuate way to often from year to year.

Top LB salaries in 2007 -

Lewis, Ray $ 9,428,571
Thomas, Zach $ 7,987,000
Brooking, Keith $ 7,942,226
Barnett, Nick $ 7,683,571
Bulluck, Keith $ 7,610,948

Equalls 8.13 Mill average then take out the bonuses those 5 LB received that dont count for franchise tag purposes such as the smaller workout bonuses and other really small bonuses such as that and the amount is 8.065 Mill.

:notworthy:

How will the recent cuts of Holt, Ross, and Cooper affect this? Obviously we don't know how much Berry's restructure saved us, but I'm guessing we are around $10 million after all these changes?

Added in recent cuts. Dont have info on Berry yet though so his number stays the same.

Cool, almost 11 million before extending Fitz and figuring in Berry's discount. I like it. Extend Fitz and maybe restructure a few more deals, and add in the Berry savings, and we could have upwards of 25 million in space. Niiiiice.

Extending Fitz is still very much so a priority. After we hand out our RFA tenders to Green, Smith, Brown, and maybe Urban and/or Merritt we will be back down to the 3 Mill mark which will need to be ear marked for rookies. Of course depending on what tenders they give. So that means what ever we saved from the Berrys deal is currently the only money we have for free agents. Graves has 8 more days to get a deal done with Fitz or things are going to be very quiet the first week of free agency.

Also getting a deal done with Dansby by the July 15th deadline may also be a priority so we have some money for the injury fund.

And don't forget the "second wave" of free agents that comes after June 1st. Hopefully, we'll be able to pick up a starter or two then.

This so-called "second wave" has been a running joke on this site for years.

Nothing of note has ever come of it.

June 1st cuts havent yeilded any worth while cuts for some time now and is pretty much a useless tool especially considering each team cuts those players before June 1st anyways becuase they can designate up to 2 players a June 1st cut for cap purposes before June 1st even comes around. I am willing to bet we designated Berry as one and we would still have another.

If that were the case, then why would Rod Graves insist that we were keeping salary cap space open for June 1st cuts to improve the team?

Probably because it sounds better than any other thing he could say. Gotta get those butts in the seats.

I'm sure you know, Joe, but Kent Somers posted the salary structures for LaBoy, Johnson, and the TE.

Also, I was wondering what happens to the cap hit for Fitz's leftover bonus when we give him a new deal. Does it accelerate into the current year? Does it get re-spread over the new deal? I was trying to make a deal work for him while you were taking a break, and I didn't know what to do with that number.

They were actually incentives which means his base salaries were raised. There was no bonuses. As for his remaining signing bonus it does get added into the next 2 years regardless of any new deal.

Do we really only have 48 players under contract right now?

Most teams are probably hovering around 51 players that count under the cap right now. So I dont think we are far off.

Somers is reporting that the Cards have the least amount of cap space in the league, with less than $1 million under the cap. That's based on a YahooNews story, so who really knows

Didnt we learn from the story that I think Don Banks put out that said we were 3 Mill over the cap last month. We are probably closer to the 2 to 3 Mill mark then we are to 0. In fact that last number that I heard and think is probably the most accurate reported amount right now is 2.8 Mill.

That's kind of what I thought, too. Thanks.
