Joe,

I asked you in another post, whether there could be any advantage in moving the $15M guarantee, or a larger portion - into the possible 2010 uncapped year... and whether this is a good idea?

Well, that seems to be pretty much it... Once they extend Wilson it looks like the Cards cap is pretty much used up...

Extending Wilson will most likely lower Wilsons cap hit this season. Unless the go crazy front load on the deal. Same with Dansby. And if they did front load it, which is doubtful he is already taking up a lot of cap space so it would only be about 1-2 more mill. added to the cap.

Actually, I think we're in great shape. I also think Boldin will be upset because he won't be on the front burner right now. As I see it, our FO's focus will be on two fronts: extending our own and getting the bargain FAs. They don't have the money to get those bargains and extend Boldin at this time, so they'll put him on a back burner. If (hopefully when!) Wilson and Dansby get extended, which will free up cap space, then Boldin will get his deal. Otherwise, he'll have to wait. And I'm perfectly fine with that. Let's get some good mid-tier FAs and depth players, and work on keeping our own. Go Cards!

Updated spreadsheet 3-5-09

I got clarification on some dead cap space from past cuts and found out I had to much included. So we have about 1.5 more mill. in cap space then I projected yesterday.

Sommers recent blog about us having 22 mill in cap space has me confused.

States that we had 46 mill to begin the offseason. Then he did the math of deducting Warner(11.5), Dansby (9.7), Watson & Pope (2.5), and came out to 22 million left in cap space. Says that someone familiar with the cap says 22 mill cioncides with what the team has in cap space left as of today. I asked if that 22 mill include guys like Pierre, Graham, Lewis, Rolle's salary increase and some of the EFA's and he posted back that again a guy with knowledge of the cap says we have 22 mill so those players should be included. But according to the second sentance of this paragraph how can that be? So I still contend they are not inculding the other deals we have done or the Rolle increase and the math shows that already. Unless there is funny math going on the Warner, Dansby, and Watson/Pope deals get us to 22 mill and they are indeed not including the other smaller deals.

So as you can see the math to how they got to 22 mill is correct so lets go from there.

22 mill - Pierre(1mil) - Lewis(620k) - Graham(620k) - Rolle increase(1.9mill) - Enough EFA's to get to the top 51 salaries(3.2 mill) = about 14.5 mill. Which is more similar to my spreadsheet. I would usually concede to the insiders with their cap amounts but in this case I just cant do that.

In this article http://www.azcardinals.com/news/detail.php?PRKey=2927

Urban mentions Leinart's cap numbers are manageable for the next 2 years and he references this blog entry with cap numbers of 2.6 then 4 http://azcardinals.com/blog/post.php?author=1&id=1682 .

Could it be there was something more to the escalator for Leinart and he didn't hit it or some other reasoning leading to no issue of Leinarts salary ballooning?

Either he just forgot to mention the bonus or Matt has not in fact reached that clause in his contract and the one and only article that says he did was wrong?????

No body mentioned the Rolles contract went higher this year until about a month before and no one mentioned the Fitz thing until a few montsh before it happened, so this might be the same case.

To tell you the truth I dont know. Incentives and perfromance clauses are the hardest items to find out for me and are usually guarded with Hydra's and hell hounds.

I hope it's true that he didn't hit that clause. That would greatly improve our situation going into next season capped or uncapped.

I did some searching and it appears the $14 million is due in 2011 not 2010 according to scout.com.

Now here is the quote from yahoo sports that gives more details
1. Leinart, Arizona: Leinart was the No. 10 overall pick and was the last player to sign a contract after a holdout of nearly two weeks. Along the way, agent Tom Condon had to fight the penurious Cardinals on a number of issues, beginning with the length of the contract, the amount of guaranteed money and the way the escalators in the contract were triggered. At one point, the Cardinals were even asking for "offset" language. Therefore if they cut Leinart before the end of his deal, he would have to pay them back any signing bonus he might receive from another team. By the end, Condon got a deal that could pay Leinart $40.36 million over six years, more than any player except the top three players selected. He got all of that without Leinart having to perform at a Superman level.

Leinart can make $15 million more by simply playing a minimum amount of time in any of his first four seasons (that's either 35 percent of the offensive downs as a rookie or 45 percent in years 2, 3 or 4).

But the real key to the deal is an escalator for the fifth year and another in the sixth. The first escalator raises Leinart's base pay by $8.5 million in 2010 if he either plays 55 percent of the offensive snaps in two of the first four seasons or 70 percent in any one season (the Cardinals must also reach a team qualifier – which states an area of statistical improvement – under those two scenarios, but that's not considered difficult). The second escalator raises Leinart's deal by $11 million in 2011 if he plays a minimum amount of the plays and the team reaches a qualifier.

Of course, those salaries are not guaranteed, but they will put Arizona in a tough position of either having to cut Leinart right away and give him a chance to go elsewhere; pay him based on even the most modest performance; or come back to him to renegotiate the deals. That puts Leinart and Condon in a much stronger position down the line

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-notes092806&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Now what is interesting is that while he played in 12/16 games as a rookie, he had only 68% of the pass attempts and only played the second half of his first game and the first half of his second game. I'm not sure how many actually offensive snaps he got, but it may work out that he only got 69.x% or so and thus missed the 70%. He did not play 55% any 2 of the first 4 years unless he plays a 55% this year. Thus, if it is true that he only played 69.x% of the snaps as a rookie that would explain why he isn't due the bonus next year.

It looks to me like he gets the 15 mil bonus in 2010 according to the article. He played in 35 percent of the offensive plays in his rookie year.

It also appears that had he played more, he would have a 23 mil cap hit in 2010.

I'm not as good as Joe with this cap stuff so its quite possible that i'm incorrect, but thats just the way i'm reading the info from the article you posted.

One of the bonuses is for 2010 and one for 2011. I think the 2011 one is the one he has hit so far.

You could be right. It just looks like to me, the way the article is written that he has 3 different bonuses/escalators. The first one was the 15 mil in year 5 because of this....

Leinart can make $15 million more by simply playing a minimum amount of time in any of his first four seasons (that's either 35 percent of the offensive downs as a rookie or 45 percent in years 2, 3 or 4).

The second would be the same year......

Leinart's base pay by $8.5 million in 2010 if he either plays 55 percent of the offensive snaps in two of the first four seasons or 70 percent in any one season

The third would be in 2011....

raises Leinart's deal by $11 million in 2011 if he plays a minimum amount of the plays

Again, I very well could be wrong, and I hope so because that would certainly make the situation better if his bonus big cap number is due the year after Warner retires. Just saying thats the way it looks to me.

I havent updated the spreadsheet just yet becuase I want to do it all at one time and I am still waiting on info for Elton Brown. I have the info for everyone else and it will be on the spreadsheet in a few days.

Just some tidbits - Berry is only making 1.25 mill, Haggans 1.5, Wright 800k, Becht vet min of 745k, Ralph Brown the vet min of 745k, Leisle the vet min of 535k, Raiola isnt even in the top 51, Elton Brown I am still waiting on.

So without knowing what Elton got yet I am estimating 2-3 mill left in cap space.

The report today from Somers, Joe, is that the Cardinals are a mere $1.5M under the cap. Somers went on to suggest the money the Cardinals could recover from (1) releasing Edge; (2) signing Dansby and Rolle to extensions; (3) reworking Okeafor's and Gandy's contracts (both in the $5M range).

What are your thoughts?

He is probably right. I am probably missing a little bit of dead cap space from past cuts.

As for the rest he is absolutely correct. Even giving Wilson an extension would cut his cap figure for this season.
