I'm glad he is gone but Towers offseason spending has been a total bust. Instead of spending over $7 million on guys who are no longer on the team at the midway point,(Mora, Gallaraga, Branyan and Heilman) he could of signed a decent player who could actually contribute.

It will be interesting to see how Enright does tonight because he gave up a lot of homers in the minors. Hoping for the Barry of last year.
Yes, those moves haven't worked, but $7 million for 4 guys that haven't worked out, doesn't seem nearly as crippling as signing one big name free agent that doesn't work out. Looking at those moves it is kind of amazing the Dbacks are in second place.

Instead of signing over-the-hill journeymen, signing a good player would of benefitted this team. Almost every Diamondback fan knew when those guys were signed it was a waste of money. You can't say if they spent $7 million on one player he would of failed, that's ludicrous. I can say most fans knew those four that were released were going to fail.

My hope is Towers is grooming Jerry Dipoto to replace him in the near future.

I didn't say that. I said it wasn't as damaging to sign those role-player types. Do the Dbacks seem like a team willing to spend 7 mill on one player? Or, did they last off-season?

People hear also knew Chris Young was through and Upton was a disappointment. :)

When you have a lot of needs, and limited budget, the "throw a little money at a lot of people" is a decent strategy. If we were the Yanks or the BoSox, we could have thrown 40 million at 5 people - we didn't have that kind of money. You get what you pay for, and occasionally one works. I don't think any one, including Towers, thought that all or most of that group would be decent - but that at least one would be.

That is what I was trying to say. Good work.

Upton continues to struggle, although he is making decent contact on quite a few pitches. Last month those found a hole - this month, not so much.
He should probably sit and watch a game or two.

I don't understand the Towers hate. You look at the moves that didn't work out but you conveniently ignore the David Hernandez and JJ Putz moves which are THE reason this club is contending.

Not a good start for Enright. Gives up 3 homers in the first four innings. He gave up 11 in the minors this year. I wonder how long Gibson will keep him.

His minor league ERA and tendency to give up a lot of home runs did not warrant bringing him up.

After he gave up the solo shot and two-run homer in the 1st, I sadly predicted that he would give up another two-run homer before the inning ended.

How ironic that Enright was relieved so quickly by Duke, the man he was called up to replace in the rotation.

This is especially sad because the "B" in BC867 stands for Barry. After all those years of having to live down Barry Bonds. :)

This game should be the last chance for all of these guys. Towers needs to go out and get two more pitchers for sure... I trust Micah more in any situation over the last three guys.

Edit: This is why! Good stuff by Micah

Saunders and Kennedy need to do some work the next two nights.

Finding another quality starting pitcher should be priority one at this point. Ol Barry aint cutting it.

Does anyone know why Micah is in the doghouse? Sure seems that way to me, and the announcers last night even commented on it.

Makes no sense why clowns like Duke/Enright get starting opportunities over Micah. I don't think Micah is a good starter, but he fights his ass off and has been much more effective than their other options.

Micah has found an opportunity. He is doing much better in long relief than he did as a starter. Put him back in the rotation and he becomes mediocre again. As you said, he is not a good starter.

The ol' Peter Principle said, "In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." You promote a guy until he reaches the position beyond his skills. And you are stuck with a negative situation.

Happily, Micah Owings has not been a victim of the Peter Principle.

Shut out and Upton, Montero, and KJ go deep.

Nice recovery to split the series.

Win it for Drew!

Had a good start today. 5 innings 0 runs 2 hits. IMO he got pulled too soon but Duke is putting in a good performance right now.

'Good to see. The question is . . . is Owings able to work himself up to seven innings of good pitching most starts?

As desperately as we need a #5 starter, that would be great.

I hope his staying in the rotation doesn't become a case of five good innings becoming four, then three. Time will tell.

Regarding the combination of Owings and Duke, I remember on the Miracle Mets, they teamed the rookie Nolan Ryan with Jim McAndrews. Ryan started and McAndrews finished every start, usually in a ratio of 5-4 or maybe 6-3 innings per game.

It will be interesting to see if Owings and Duke (each previously bounced from the rotation) can work the same routine.

I don't think so. The most pitches he had thrown in awhile was 26. Tonight he threw 62. Pulling him after 5 and a good lead was smart. Having him go back out is risking injury.
