He wasn't that impressive in the video....almost got his QB killed a couple of times.

He gets burned badly twice - one a sack and the other a strip-sack that is returned for a defensive TD. There were a few other times that Ray got close but the QB got the ball out and once where Ray got the backup QB right around the line of scrimmage when he held onto the ball way too long. The two bad beats were critical negative plays, and the bad plays are definitely what offensive tackles get remembered for, but outside of those I thought he held his own over the course of the entire game. But two bad beats a game to good pass rushers in the NFL means you are giving up a WHOLE LOT of sacks.

Does anyone remember the offensive line we had in 1975? One of the keys to that line was Conrad Dobler, who during his career was known as the meanest man in football. Along with Dan Dierdorf and the others, they only allowed 8 sacks that year which was an NFL record.

Give Palmer a line like that and he'll look like Superman.

Don't get this pick at all. Not a need for one and the guy is not ready to start anyway. Does anyone think he is better than The LT we already have. Randy Gregory was there for the taking and we pick this guy up. Very disappointed with this pick.

Gregory has obvious issues.. there's a reason 31 other teams (or 28 or 29 or whatever) passed on a guy with top 5-10 talent. Don't think you can blame a team for passing on a guy with huge character concerns. Wolf had him pegged to fall out of the first round at least a week ago.

Couldn't we have traded down and still got this guy?

Had to be someone to trade with

Supposedly we had a couple of offers and passed on them.

Well, now I'm glad my daughter's dance recital was tonight and I missed this. I'm not stoked by this pick. Bleh. :(

Problem here is we got the mediocre brand LT... the 5TH taken... who we're gonna switch to RT. It's not like we took a sure thing. We took an oft-injured player who's best attribute was that he was awesome in high school... three years ago. That doesn't scream like best value for your money.
Yep! Should've of taken Gregory... But the ghost of D Wash screwed that pooch. :(

I saw somewhere (forget if here or somewhere else) that Carolina might have been eyeing him at 25 and Detroit was probably eyeing him at 29 (they took a guard after acquiring a guard in their trade down).

Right.

However, on the two negative plays, at least Humphries was still engaged in his blocks---it wasn't like Ray was able to leave Humphries in the dust---as we've seen from past tackles we've drafted.

Humphries' talent is obvious in this tape---did everyone see how quickly he gets to the second level on running plays?

His technique is the issue---not his physical talents---and as he gets more consistent with his hands and his counter punch, this kid could be special.

Panthers would have taken him at 25 it seems:

Darin Gantt @daringantt
Gettleman said his two guys at 25 were DJ Humphries and Shaq Thompson. @BlackBlueReview called it yesterday http://blackandbluereview.com/a-pair-of-panthers-first-round-draft-predictions/ … #respect

I can see the disappointment. But the O-Line prospects drop off drastically after the 2nd Rd. There will be a very good RB there.

I don't want to see Brady Sowell any more.

If Veldheer goes down for any reason you can kiss the season goodbye because we had no one but him.

Sexy pick would have been nice. Cardinals are about W's now. He'll help.

I believe Keim that the whole organization really likes him. I didn't, but I don't get paid to make these calls. WTH, maybe I'll get an authentic Humphries jersey this year so I REALLY root for this kid to be great. :)

Early on he seemed to make Ray a nonfactor till the game got out of reach and they started passing every play and their QB did not exactly have a good idea of what stepping up in the pocket means lol

Every single analyst is grading the AZ's pick an A+. Never seen that before. The only thing I am now concerned with is that Massie beats him out and he is sitting for the full year.

I wrote this in my post at the top of page 12.

How he fits: Humphries is the most athletic offensive tackle in this draft. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah, among others, has him as the No. 1 offensive tackle overall. He is a tremendous player at a position of need, and would be a perfect fit if he falls to 23rd.

Here is what Josh Weinfuss, ESPN Arizona Cardinals reporter wrote:

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After a free-agency haul that included two defensive linemen, two linebackers and a left guard, the Arizona Cardinals don’t have any glaring holes in their roster heading into the NFL draft, their head coach said.

“There’s not a dying need at any position,” coach Bruce Arians said. “We can take the best players available in this draft and not reach for need at all.

“Free agency was such a big part of what we did to fill needs and get quality people that, I’ve said it a couple times, we could take the team now and go play.”

“When you look at him on tape and you see the things that he does, you see that he has the ability to grow even more,” Keim said. “We felt like if he came back for his senior year, he could potentially even be a top-five pick.”

It looks like Bruce Arians meant what he said when they drafted Humphries.

Good article. Nice to hear he's added weight too. 25 lbs!

Here's a good nugget from that article:

Keim said the board normally gives players conservative grades, but Humphries size and physical tools, along with his "nasty temperament," made him an obvious first-round pick that the Cardinals felt could have been a top-five pick if he had stayed at Florida another year.

Remember last couple years when BA said the "best five players" will start on the offensive line?

Right now---BA has to say it is a competition at RT---BA doesn't hand any rookie a starting job during the draft.

Plus, Humphries is versatile like Cameron Erving---he can play C and G.

Mr Scout what do you think our plans are for tommorrow? I think we grabbed the best pass pro LT in the draft but I still didn't feel it was a need. Given the board, I personally would've drafted Kendricks or Anthony at 24, though me & CBus said the Cards should've traded up a few for Ray cause we knew what was about to happen. Ugh

Trade up?

A lot of chatter that not only can he man the RT or LT and Veldheer to RT but that Humphries could man either guard position too.

I don't know much about the kid but if all that is accurate, I think it's a fine pick. I still would of rather seen us get up and get a pass rusher but it is what it is.

I got very down on Ray and it wouldn't surprise me if BA&SK did as well. Plus, he's got the toe issue. But---i really don't think that after the D-Wash situation that they want to take chances on players with drug issues/histories. I think it would have made BA&SK look foolish, to tell you the truth. (You know---they took the 3rd round risk on Tyrann Mathieu BEFORE the D-Wash debacle). To take a 1st round risk at this point would seem desperate on their part.

I think the Cardinals will keep drafting the top player on their board as they did with Humphries. There may continue to be surprises and possibly a trade or two.

MJ reported that BA&SK did try to move to #21 (CIN) up ahead of the Steelers---but that was to take Dupree. I don't think BA&SK were as high on Ray as some people think. I really do think they feel confident in the integrity of their board.

What do you think?

I think they would've passed on Ray even if he's sitting there. They had their guy pegged.

Then you would really have seen head's literally exploding. :D
