mizzou field is fast, even last year kony ealy ran 4.90 at combine and then 4.57 at pro day

We're transitioning to a 4-3.

This guy is a great technician. A KVB-type. While Ray had the natural ability, Golden has the technical skill set to succeed if the physical stuff is good enough.

4-3 strong side DE.

I think BA&SK wanted RB Ameer Abdullah, but when he was taken it prompted them to trade back because Golden was the next highest rated player on their board.

Check out this 2nd round mock from PFT earlier today:

They have the Seahawks taking Golden---and he is their kind of player---he's tough and relentless. The Cardinals will groom him this year behind LaMarr Woodley at SOLB, and Golden will be a situational edge rusher in sub packages.

Usually players run faster at pro days because 40's are hand timed where as the Combine is electronic I believe.

Golden was productive as a SR with 10 sacks, 20 TFL & 78 tackles, he has a high motor and something I think may have helped is that he & Ray ran through LB drills not DL drills so teams saw he could adjust to a new position. Forty times can be overrated as the saying goes, you're not running 40 yards to get to the QB.

A quote from Mike Mayock:
"This is one of the hardest-working men in college football. He doesn't get as much pub as his teammate Shane Ray, but when you put the tape in he sticks out. Every time he's on the football field, it's 100 percent." -- Mike Mayock

That is what BASK love, a player that has a passion for the game and goes all out despite unimpressive measurables plus he is a high character guy with no baggage. I don't think Harold ran through LB drills so not sure if BASK maybe don't view him as a 3-4 OLB?

All that said I still would have went with Harold as he was a little more productive than Golden career wise and is a much more explosive player. Grade wise Harold is a 1st to 2nd round pick who is falling but would be a steal.

k9, I wouldn't be surprised if you told me you were an NFL scout.

what the heck does "he's a great technician" mean? that's some real insider sounding talk

4-3, 4-2-5. Yeah. We let Acho leave and didn't replace him with anyone. Dan Williams left and we signed two 290 lbs-ears.

just to support k9's point, here's a quote from Golden after he was drafted;

“I knew they liked the way I rush the passer,” Golden said. “I know their defense is changing around and they want some pass rushers. I met with them at my Pro Day and it went pretty well.”

So the new DC is changing the D?

Most 3-4 teams run 4-2-5 a higher percentage of the time now due to passing rule changes. We're not switching to a 4-3. By changes they are talking about wanting edge rushers as opposed to having to A-gap/B-gap blitz. They are looking for personnel that can be 3 down players. With Peters and Redding they have 2 players that can play all three downs. And Peters isn't 290...he's more in the 305-310 range and has been productive on the nose and on end.

And they replaced Acho with Woodley. BA is very high on Woodley.

After watching some clips, I like this pick...don't know why, same feeling I had I watched Ellington.

SK has preached about putting more stock into game tape than work out numbers. Golden does look good on tape even if he looks slow. Having Shane Ray on the other side does help but he put up some nice numbers last season. I am starting to get over the shock of him being a reach in that if he winds up putting up Okafor numbers (8 sacks) then it doesn't matter if we got him in the second round or the fifth round.

Pros
•Relentless, savvy pass rusher who consistently finds ways to bring pressure every play
•Produced at highest level; one of only three players last year to record 75 tackles, 20 TFLs and ten sacks
•Outstanding run support; able to quickly locate the ball, can shed blocks and good tackler
•Relentless energy and motor. Gives 100% on every play, always plays through the whistle
•Underrated athlete; flexible with quickness to wiggle through gaps
•Three down player; great job setting the edge
•Does not stay blocked; excellent counter moves
•Comfortable from two or three point stance; scheme versatility to play in 4-3 or 3-4
•Uses his hands well to keep defenders from getting to his body and engaging
•Finisher; good closing speed and does not let sacks through his grasp
•Surprisingly top notch instincts for a D-Lineman
•Great awareness; able to locate ball and get in passing lanes for deflections

Cons
•Lacks ideal measureables; speed is average and arm length (31 1/8") could be a problem
•Isn't a speed rusher who will burn tackles around the perimeter
•Lack of length combined with lack of explosion don't offer the potential most look for in top end edge rushers
•Somewhat stiff in the hips; doesn't change direction with suddenness
•Straight-line athlete; gets his production through fundamentals

Overall

No Markus Golden doesn't have the freakish athleticism that many drool over when scouting pass rushers, but don't get it twisted, he's better than Michael Sam. Though Markus Golden lacks elite speed and length, when watching him on the field he shows exceptional quickness, flexibility and power to go along with his instincts and fundamentals.

Few pass rushers in college football have produced more than Markus Golden over the past two years and that doesn't happen by mistake. To be sure, Golden hangs his hat on being an energy pass rusher who brings it on every play. He's relentless, tough, consistent and instinctive. He also provides something a lot of defensive ends coming out of college don't, and that's the ability to support the run, which Golden does as a very high level.

What you see is what you get with Markus Golden, his potential for growth is likely maxed out so the player you saw at Missouri is probably exactly the player you're going to get in the NFL. Which isn't a bad thing considering Golden's production against top SEC competition the past two years.

In our opinion Golden is one of the more underrated players in this draft. We view him as a tier two pass rusher who should go in the early second round, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him go later in the third.
