Atlanta's D played 3-4-4 alignment 3% of the time in 2013 when Peters had some value. Tell me another story, but please back it up with some facts.
NTs in even a pressure 3-4 have to play two-gap BECAUSE everyone else around them is playing one-gap. It's the only way you have coverage.
As for Woodley, he's not playing in a fire zone blitz scheme here, either.
Doesn't negate the fact that Peters played zero technique...or NT...lined directly over center. Atlanta plays what they call an "amoeba" defense and whether they are aligned in a 3-4 or one of their many other fronts, it functioned a lot like a 3-4. Peters himself mentioned in one of his interviews how he has experience playing 0 and will play nose here. Why do you think shortly after Peters signed here his agent came out and said that Peters is closer to 320lbs.
And no...in many 1 gap systems, the NT will play 1 gap as well. The coverage comes through rotating lbs and sometimes dl. The nose in any of Wade Phillips defenses is typically a 1 gap nose.
You're right, our defense isn't really a fire zone scheme, but one thing that both BA and Bowles stressed when they got here was that it was very close to the same defense as they ran before. Regardless, Woodley is much better suited for a 3-4 than a 4-3. And if we can finally get some edge pressure from our OLB without having to blitz as much it will resemble it even more.
There would be absolutely zero talk of moving Kareem Martin to OLB if they were considering moving to a 4-3. Also, here is some facts for you...there hasn't been a single person within the organization that has ever mentioned moving to a 4-3. No insider...no reporter...no player...no coach. In fact...Gunter said in his interview that they asked him to play DE in the 34 defense.
