Ivan Rabb turning down a chance to be taken in the lottery is a surprise for me. That's a lot of money to leave on the table when players risk injury by staying in college.

Yep. He essentially cuts his pro career shorter by a year. Plus he leaves lottery money on the table. Next year is a deeper draft, so there is that risk. Then there is the injury risk that could drop him in the draft. Finally, he not only has to improve, but by alot because there is a freshman "bonus" in value based upon potential. Once you are a sophomore, that potential better start becoming reality.

This kid has gotten bad advice. I think all the freshmen entering the league is bad for the NBA, but the individual choices are often bad for the player.

He's staying because he promised his mom he would to be closer to his younger brother one more year.

Admittedly it's a risk, and the next draft is better so he could go later.

Does anybody know is there really talk the rookie cap will go up next year? I read somehwere that a couple of kids had suggested they were staying in part because of that. The idea being that with the new tv money and contracts skyrocketing the rookie deals are becoming unfairly low and they might raise it next year.

True the rookie contracts haven't been scaled up but now days rookies are greater gambles than they were before, because the guys are leaving college after 1 year. They get paid earlier in life and have longer careers so they are not really getting shafted when it comes to total earnings. One possibility is to allow the first round draftees to opt for a second round type of contract.

Even if staying in college longer thus delaying the follow-up contract to a rookie contract by 1-3 years is a big financial loss.

Rabb is taking a huge risk, if he stagnates at Cal he could easily find himself in the 2nd round.

Moms sometimes have a hard time seeing their kids functioning in the adult world. Not the best advice.

Sure but we're looking at it one angle only she's seeing another I guess. The youngest son is a junior at Bishop O'Dowd, think he's a track and field guy doesn't play hoops. So by Ivan staying at Cal the younger son gets to graduate from O'Dowd and then the plan would presumably be Ivan turns pro gets a nice contract and moves the family to a better neighborhood and maybe helps the brother go to college if he doesn't get a scholarship.

So I guess the risk is him graduating from O'Dowd worth the risk Ivan's stock falls he doesn't get that big contract and moving the family and helping the brother go to college gets much harder.

I guess for them the decision came down to family not basketball, he's confident in his ability to get to the NBA.

Slinslin, I was looking at your new draft order.

#04 PF 6'9 Marquese Chriss
#13 FC 7'0 Skal Labissiere
#28 CF 7'1 Thon Maker
#34 PG 6'5 Dejounte Murray

I do not think Chriss is worthy of the #4 pick if that is where the Suns select. IMO, it would be reaching. The best talent at this slot is at PG and SG. If I'm the Suns, I would try to trade this pick for a player or a pick in another draft. Also the Suns might consider moving down in the draft here.

Any thoughts?

Not updated in a month or so. Won't update it until the NBA combine. Marquese Chriss measurables will play a big role.

I don't particularly like any of the guys projected at #4 wether it is Bender, Hield, Murray or Dunn.

Based on need Kris Dunn would be the best pick at #4, maybe Jaylen Brown.

Also I think the draft lottery on May 17th will help determine which direction the Suns go. If the Suns drafted #4 ( as it stands right now), I would try to trade out of this spot. I am curious how the Suns feel about Bender.

More and more I think the Suns will need to sign a player like Horford in free agency. Young players will take time to groom.

Ben Simmons isn't the only one missing the combine.

Three players — Ben Simmons, Domantas Sabonis & Dejounte Murray — declined to participate.

Simmons is going either #1 or #2 regardless of participating in the combine so skipping it isn't that big of an issue. If I was picking #1 though I'd be looking at Ingram instead of Simmons because his competitive nature has been one of the question marks surrounding him and passing on the combine doesn't exactly help address that.

Devin Booker will be the Suns draft representative at the lottery if it hasn't already been mentioned. However, there is a story to go with it.

The Suns decided that Devin Booker would be the ideal franchise representative for the NBA draft lottery on May 17.

His next move backed up why.

Before most home games of his rookie season, Booker interacted with a girl who arrived two hours early with her family to watch him warm up. Once he knew he would be the Suns’ draft lottery representative, Booker told team officials that he wanted to bring the teenage girl with Down syndrome and her family to the draft lottery in New York City with him. From there, the team hustled to identify the family and Booker posted an Instagram video inviting Jenna Warren, her mother and stepfather, calling them “the biggest Suns fans I know.”

It's great to read good things about Suns players. If they are going to win a championship some day they will need quality players as part of their foundation.

I agree with you. And it's a great story.

Sabonis skipping will hurt him. I assume he is trying to control the measurements info as it gets out. Maybe he already has a promise.

I think Sabonis skipping the combine will hurt as well. I can understand the promise thing with a later first round pick but if it is an earlier pick, who is to say a better player does not drop.

Sometimes I wonder if Frank Kaminsky might have been a promise pick. IMO, there were much better players available at #9 in the 2015 draft but the Hornets were not willing to budge.

I think it's interesting with seniors not getting invites because there are so many under classmen. I'm of the opinion Tarczewski will make an NBA roster and i wouldn't be stunned if Ryan Anderson does too, but neither has a combine invite.

Anderson played quite well at Portsmouth. Miller is all in defending Tarc, NBA teams will love him when they meet him, he's going to make a roster combine or not etc.

Anderson can score and rebound, he's not a good defender and he's an undersized 4 but I suspect he'll eventually play in the NBA even if not right away, might have to go to D league or overseas.

So far the surprise to me is Julian Jacobs of USC hiring an agent and staying in the draft
