For all the hype on Ohtani, one of the top pitchers in Japan last season, former major-league RHP Miles Mikolas, quietly became a free agent today. Mikolas had a 2.18 ERA in 62 starts for Yomiuri Giants from 2015-17. His agents at Octagon expect at least 10 major-league offers.

Some rival evaluators who have spoken to the Marlins on Stanton say their sense is Miami's priority in trade proposals is moving his salary, and that adding talented players in return is the secondary concern.

This is dumb, why did they sign him to that huge extension THIS YEAR if they didn't want to be saddled with his contract? They should have dealt him before extending him, they could have gotten a great package from teams arming up for the playoffs.

Sources: #Marlins have agreed to general framework of Giancarlo Stanton trades with both #STLCards and #SFGiants; the deals are on hold, while Marlins wait for Stanton to inform them whether he’d accept either trade. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Source: RHP Miles Mikolas and the St. Louis Cardinals are nearing an agreement on a multiyear deal. Mikolas has thrived the last three seasons in Japan and would provide another option in an already-deep Cardinals rotation. Would leave open possibility for trades as well.

The contract was signed 3 years ago and the team changed ownership at the end of this season.

It bought out his arbitration eligible seasons at a decent price and is now getting to the expensive bits

The Marlins aren't known for consistent decisions or smart decisions.

As a Marlins fan this frustrates me. As someone who wants to see the DBacks do well, I don't want to see him in SF.

His splits in NL West stadiums are insane.

Interesting move by the twins to grab a prospect each from the Angels and Mariners in exchange for about $1m apiece in intentional bonus pool money

Rangers, Angels and Mariners have the financial advantage over the field.
