I noticed last season that Daniel Descalso was a tale of two players. Early in games, he's an o-fer. Late in games he's a clutch hitter.

If it continues this season, it says that, whether as a pinch hitter or a sub, he would best be utilized from the 7th inning on. And never start.

Especially since we now have Owings to spot start at 2B, SS and 3B, as well as all three outfield positions (which we shouldn't have a need for).

It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I despise that "he is clutch in the later innings". They all count, early and late, and they changed the way the game is played. The only thing that counts is the final score, not when you scored them. No lap money in baseball.

Robbie Ray's day is done. He goes five innings, allowing two runs (both earned) that came off that Jason Heyward dinger in the second inning. He surrendered four hits and no walks, and struck out four.

I wasn't generalizing. I was observing that Descalso seems to be more efficient at bat during the latter part of games and, especially now with Owings as the backup 2B, SS and 3B, Descalso would best be held for the latter innings, where is his potential has been greater, rather than start, or pinch hit early.

Isn't that part of the manager determining the best use of each player to influence the final score based on his performance history? To overlook that seems unwise.

Sorry this was not directed at you personally. Just years of built up frustration about the term “clutch”. Somebody has to set the table.

Thanks. But I believe that "setting the table" and "clutch" are not direct alternatives.

In the case of Descalso, he has not been a "setting the table" type of hitter early in games. Nor has he been a run producer during the first six innings of games. But he has been superb both getting on base and delivering clutch hits during the final three innings.

And, just as any other sport, players who tend to deliver with the game on the line are indeed "clutch" and play larger roles in the difference between losing and winning. Runs in the 4th inning, for example, are not the same with either getting on base or driving in runs during the latter innings to tie or take leads, no matter what the score.

Which is why I suggested that Descalso should not be used to start games or pinch hit early in games. But he has shown himself to be a difference maker with the game on the line. Yup, "clutch". :)

I don't like seeing Silvino Bracho come in to pitch. Top of the 6th vs. the Dodgers and he throws 23 pitches including a walk, balk and a wild pitch. He's given up four HR's so far this spring training.

D-backs hold on to a 4-1 win over L.A. 'Good to see!

Christian Walker's RBI double pulls the #Dbacks within two. It's 5-3 in the 8th. #DbacksSpring
My son, daughter-in-law and grandson live in Goodyear, so I drove over from NE Phoenix and we attended the game. When Walker came up to pinch hit, I said, "This guy is a power hitter, but he is in line behind Goldy at 1B. C'mon, Walker, give it a shot (there were two runners on base) and give us the lead." He narrowly missed the 3-run HR when he got the double.

I found it unusual that LH hitting Chris Herrmann got the start at 1B against a lefty starting pitcher with Goldy resting. I know the skipper said he wants to see different players at different positions, but the 3rd string lefty hitting Catcher covering for Goldy against a lefty seemed odd.
