With the news of Steven Souza Jr. suffering a right shoulder strain during Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo delivered a simple message:

“We’re built for this.”

Souza, who was acquired in a Feb. 20 trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, injured his right shoulder when diving for a line drive in the fourth inning of Wednesday’s game at Salt River Fields. He remained face-first on the turf for several minutes until team staff made their way to the outfield.

“A great jump by a right fielder that was trying to make a play and get us out of a situation,” Lovullo said. “And that’s exactly who Steven Souza is. He dove, he laid out and it seemed like he was very close to the ball and closing on it quickly.

Yeah, get used to Souza injuring himself. He's worse than anyone at that, including Harper.

An MRI on Thursday morning showed Souza suffered a right pectoral strain diving for a line drive the night before against the San Francisco Giants. He’ll miss at least a couple of weeks, meaning he’ll likely start the season on the disabled list, according to manager Torey Lovullo; but given how Souza felt at the time of the injury, all parties are breathing a sigh of relief.

“I was obviously in a little bit of pain (last night) and you never know what to think in those situations,” he said, “but after this morning, we got some good news that I won’t be down too long.”

Souza said when he landed face-first he “kind of felt something weird in my shoulder, almost like a cramp.” But once he attempted to get up to go after the baseball “my chest didn’t want to cooperate and I felt my pec kind of grab and so I just kind of rolled over and I knew it wasn’t right.”

The decision of who should cover for Souza is a no-brainer. We have a power hitting 1B who was just sent down (with Goldy blocking his path) who has some experience playing the OF. Without Souza, we need Christian Walker as our #5 hitter. A lot better choice than Owings. And, AFAIC, a better choice than Tomas as well.
