Kingsbury says #CardsCamp will be a mix of virtual meetings with players from home while other meetings will be held at stadium socially distanced. Adds that he still anticipates plenty of schedule changes.

Kingsbury also said the Cardinals will remain at their practice facility until Aug. 9 then go to State Farm Stadium, where they’ll have a few more days of meetings before taking the field for drills/start of the field part of camp.

Kingsbury said he not only has had discussions about potentially separating QBs in meeting rooms because of COVID prevention but multiple positions.

BA was talking about something similar last month. He may not activate his #2 QB and keep him away on game days.

Marcus Gilbert expected to jump back into right tackle spot for Cardinals

If Marcus Gilbert is fully recovered from the injuries that have derailed him over the last three seasons, you can expect him to be back in the starting right tackle job for the Arizona Cardinals.

According to Kyle Odegard of the team’s website, head coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Tuesday that he expects that Gilbert will be able to jump back into the role after missing all of last season with a torn ACL.

We want to see how Marcus looks,” Kingsbury said. “He said he feels the best he’s felt in a long time. Having all these extra months of rehab and not being forced back into anything may be huge for him. He has been a really good player in this league a long time, and if he can start off at that level, then he’s going to slide back in there.”

Gilbert was injured in practice the week of the team’s season opener last September and didn’t play in a single game for the team last season. Arizona had acquired Gilbert in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers last March but he never made it to the opener. In fact, Gilbert has now appeared in just 12 total games combined over the last three seasons because of injuries.

Kelvin Beachum and Justin Murray give the Cardinals fall back options should Gilbert not be able to adequately bounce back from the knee injury. However, if he’s able to achieve something resembling his prior form, he should have a starting job waiting for him.
“We’re excited to have some options, too,” Kingsbury said. “Justin’s development last year, drafting Josh, signing Kelvin – that’s going to be huge. But we expect Marcus to slide right in there and do a nice job right away.”

Doesn't sound like much will happen for at least a couple of weeks. The first few days are testing and quarantining. Then it sounds like some basic conditioning for a several more days when everyone who passes the COVID test are allowed in the facility.

The actual training camp as we know it where players are actually playing football most likely won't start till August 17th

Dates -----------Period
July 28-31 ------COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
Aug. 1-2 ---------Physicals and equipment distribution
Aug. 3-11 --------Acclimation period
Aug. 12-16 ------Gradual ramp-up period
Aug. 17-Sept. 6- Contact integration period (practice)

COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings (July 28-31)

  • July 28: COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
  • July 29: COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
  • July 30: Virtual meetings
  • July 31: COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
Physicals and equipment (Aug. 1-2)
After everybody has gone through a round of initial COVID-19 testing and subsequent isolation, those who tested negative will proceed with the basics of training camp prep.

This is also the period where daily COVID-19 testing begins. The NFL will have players tested once a day for the first two weeks of camp, and after two weeks, if the rate of positive tests is below five percent, testing will move to every other day.

Acclimation period (Aug. 3-11)
  • One hour of weight room and one hour of on-field conditioning
  • Total strength and conditioning (small groups under 15) duration capped at two hours
  • No conditioning tests
  • Only strength and conditioning coaches for strength and conditioning drills
  • On-field strength and conditioning subject to Phase 1 rules (QBs, receivers, kickers, punters and long snappers permitted to use footballs)
  • In addition to strength and conditioning, walkthroughs permitted up to one hour on each of the first four days and up to 75 minutes on each of the final four days
  • Aug. 8 is an off day
Gradual ramp-up period (Aug 12-16)
  • Maximum of 3 1/2 hours of on-field time per day
  • First practice starts at 90 minutes with a max increase of 15 minutes per day up to a daily maximum of 120 minutes
  • Remainder of daily 3 1/2 hour on-field time limit applied to walkthrough
  • Aug. 12-13: Phase 2 activities; helmets and approved protective shirts permitted
  • Aug. 14-16: Non-padded practice days (no live contact, all customary practice activities); helmets, spiders, shells permitted
  • Aug. 15 is an off day

Contact integration period (Aug. 17 - Sept. 6)

  • Duration starts at 90 minutes with 15-minute daily increases
  • No increase or decrease in duration following an off day
  • Daily time limits dictated by CBA
  • Maximum of 14 padded practices

Isaiah Simmons still expecting to make an impact despite COVID-19

COVID-19 has changed many things for teams and players this season, but it hasn’t changed Isaiah Simmons’ goals.
Despite no on-field work in the offseason, the eighth overall choice still expects a successful rookie season.

“I’m not going to adjust my personal goals because we’re having a little adversity with this global pandemic,” Simmons said, via Kyle Odegard of the team website. “It’s either I’m going to achieve my goals or I’m not at the end of the day. I don’t feel like I should lower my expectations or my standards for myself just because there are a few obstacles in the road.”

Simmons played safety, cornerback and linebacker at Clemson. He will start at inside linebacker in the NFL.

He has watched tape of defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Tyrann Mathieu for coverage tips, and edge-rushers Chandler Jones and Von Miller for pass-rush moves.

Simmons is expected to compete for defensive rookie of the year honors, and if he does what he expects to do, Simmons will contend.
“I’m not going to come out here and say I want to be defensive rookie of the year,” Simmons said. “That would be great and all, but I believe if I come out there and play, everything will fall in place. My biggest goal is to just make as big of an impact as I can for this organization.”
