the Cards posted a vid of all 100 of Kylers TD throws.

a few things stood out--

one being that if Fitz or Hop were in 1v1 coverage near the endzone -- regardless of if they looked open or not-- Kyler put it on them and asked them to make a play.

This is the kind of throw that Marvin needs to be way more aggressive getting. Its also the kind of play that you see bigger X wrs make with regularity across the NFL.

If Marv just catches 50% of those throws -- he has an extra 80 yards in receiving today and another TD
Yep. I posted it in another thread.

He was pretty good at it in college - just hasn't translated yet in the NFL.

Ohio St playing the easiest schedule of all major NCAA football powers year in and year out doesn't help their QBs or WRs. Last year they played "elite" programs like Youngstown St and Western Kentucky. Not to mention to all the mediocre Big 10 schools excepting Michigan.

I remember that Notre Dame game where a future 5th round pick, Cam Hart, and a freshman completely erased MHJ from the game.

PHNX Cardinals Podcast had Mina Kimes on, they were talking about Marv.

She thinks Petzing needs to feature him more, that it feels like we're just running the same offense we ran last year and oh btw every now and then here's a play for Marv. Said we're running too many low % plays for him. She took for granted he'd be NFL ready and polished so she's a bit surprised he's not looking that way.

FWIW the announcers said the coaches confirmed on the play where Kyler had to call timeout because guys weren't lined up, Marv was the guy who was NOT lined up right.

Kimes loves him, said he can run the whole route tree and she thinks we should take more advantage of that in the offense. But she did agree with the podcasters, it looks at times like he's not comfortable, he's not sure what he's doing and it shows in his routes sometimes, which was his strength in college.

Also on Kyler said he's definitely not been perfect but she says he's playing well but can play better.

Are you implying their WRs have been struggling out of the gate? CJ Stroud?

Yes. And CJ Stroud is the exception to a long string of disappointing QBs from Ohio St before him.
To be clear, I was 100% behind drafting MHJ and still am. I thought he was a cut above guys like Chris Olave (who is good), etc

As much as I clown on the PHNX crew, Kimes is a good get.

I think I heard this morning that Harrison only has one more catch than Dortch. That’s a crime. If he and Kyler can get on the same page, this offense, already with the 4th best rushing game, will be very very hard to stop.

Olave & Wilson each had over 1,000 yards their rookie years. JSN put up over 600 as the third WR on the Seahawks.

I don’t understand how that’s considered struggling.

That's factual, but not necessarily meaningful. Michael Wilson has two more receptions than MHJ, and McBridge had three more despite missing an entire game. It's a low-volume passing offense right now (26th in the NFL in attempts). Small difference in counting stats are going to have big impacts in percentages.

MHJ leads the team in target share at just over 25%. That's lower than Garrett Wilson is getting with the Jets (over 30%). Wan'Dale Robinson has a 28% target share as the second option in the Giants' passing attack. Yowza.

Agree. And get ready for a long line of OSU WRs getting drafted high.
Egbuka this year, Carnell Tate next, and Jeremiah Smith the following year.

Smith will be the best of them all.

It's not. And I am not down on MHJ. But he hasn't strolled in and immediately become the top WR in the NFL. It's still a jump from Ohio St.

There's another article about him plus a few more that all say the same thing, the Cards are working with Marv on being more detailed on the field, running routes with more precise "depth of field" and working with him on reading the defense because of how often he and Kyler aren't on the same page. I mentioned the other day they confirmed Marv was the one who didn't line up correctly and they had to call a timeout, one of these articles confirmed what Frank Sanders had said, the throw over the middle that was incomplete against SF was Marv's fault too, he didn't run the route correctly.

The good thing is everyone says he's working very hard. The one article said as he gets more precise on the details, his route tree will expand, which implies they're limiting his routes now?

I remember MHJ cooking Michigan and Georgia in b2b games whose defenses were littered with NFL draft picks. We could play this game all day.

Georiga was a good game for him, but all of his big plays come off of Stroud scrambling and extending the play. He also drops a touchdown because Stroud didn't throw it in a place where he couldn't body catch it.

MHJ is obviously a good receiver, but all the hype saying he was generational, new Calvin Johnson, so far ahead of the other receivers in the draft, etc.... it seemed unwarranted. I bought into the hype, decided to trust the analysts instead of my lying eyes. But at the time I thought I was crazy because he stood out the least of the big 3 when I watched games. Predraft I thought it might not be a bad move if Monti drafted Joe Alt or traded down and got Odunze/Nabers, and I was shouted down. Eventually I did join the MHJ or bust crowd. Right now MHJ isn't as good as Nabers, he's just not, nor is he obviously better than Odunze or Brian Thomas. Joe Alt is hurt at the moment but he completely shut down Maxx Crosby and only allowed a single pressure vs. TJ Watt.

Hopefully MHJ continues to develop, I'm not worried about him at all, he will be good for us. My only gripe was against the idea that he had to be the pick, and that any other pick or trade down would have been dumb.

A big portion of the Marvin hype, at least here, was simply due to the fact he has the most length of the top 3 WR's in the draft.
We didn't just need a WR. We needed a wr with size...the average height in our wr room was like 5'8" at the time...that obviously turned quickly.
There are soooo many factors that go into a rookies initial success... offensive style, route tree, did the OC dumb it down so he only has either/or routes,..worse yet, does he only have a single route on a given play, where is he in the progression on any given play,... just a poo ton of factors...
Other guys are doing well, apparently a bit better than Marv...but it's very possible that had we drafted one of them instead they would not be doing as well as Marv....
I was all for drafting Joe Alt then trading up a bit to get Odunze or Thomas... I really wanted to complete the offense so we could focus solely on defense next year.
But seeing Marv play, and watching Darius in practice... I gotta say I'm pretty happy with how that draft played out.
The most important thing to remember is that nobody gets drafted for their rookie season. You draft a guy for who he is going to become
