he sold the team and turned it over to Dumont and Harrison. He hired Harrison so that move is personal with him. He doesn't want to come out and admit that he made mistakes. But that is cuban's tenure in dallas in a nutshell. he's great at building a winner and he is a hard worker, but he makes a lot of mistakes that are ego centric. that's why the mavericks only won a title in the dirk era and wasted one of the greatest clutch shooters in NBA history. That is why the mavericks traded away Luka for a guy that can't even feature in the modern era. it comes down to cuban being great at some things, but being very basic at other things.

Him blowing up that team that literally just won the title is one of the strangest things I've ever seen in sports. None of those guys were washed up, sure it wasn't a young team but all of those guys had a few good years left. I realize what he was doing, he thought he was setting them up for a better outlook in the long term, but good lord... you gotta defend a title.

Also, by biggest... well, only, knock on Jerry Colangelo is that he sold to Robert Sarver, who immediately showed himself to be a penny pincher.

Bad times, Colangelo rushed the sale of the Suns to raise capitol for the D-Backs and then the D-Backs group forced him out anyway... and both both franchises were worse off for losing him.

that is something that doesn't get talked about enough. and for as great as dirk was in 2011 he was really amazing in 2012 (at least in the regular season) in clutch performances. Cuban squandered dirk's prime multiple times if you factor Nash being let go. Cuban was obsessed with chasing other superstar players that never came to dallas, and in the process lost great players on multiple occasions that went on to improve at other locations. I don't think cuban is getting enough critique for his role in squandering Luka Doncic. Cuban is more interested in himself than he is in the mavericks.

Jimmy Butler impact stat

Pre Butler the Warriors were 30th in FT attempts, since Butler 5th. And they are 1st in FT's made since they got Butler. adding 1 guy has been huge, he draws so many fouls they get in the bonus now

Great... all I needed was more reasons to dislike Durant.

The Mavs never made a finals with Nash. He was getting worked by Mike Bibby in the playoffs.

Dirk was just a late bloomer as far as championship superstars develop.

Dirk and Nash needed to separate to reach their full potential. Dirk doesn't ever ascend to the next level and neither does Nash if they stayed paired up in Dallas.

Plus, the defense not breaking down from his position. AT the Suns game, there was a play where Butler was heading towards the guy in the corner to guard him, and one of the Suns tried to pass around him since Butler's back was turned, and Jimmy snaked his arm out and caught the ball before it went past his back! It was like he taunted the guy into the pass, or has excellent peripheral vision, or both.

Yeah the defense is markedly better both because of Butler and because around the same time they got Payton back and then shortly after Kuminga. Losing Wiggins didn't help the defense Wiggs was a good defender, but as well as he was playing on offense the Butler impact has been huge, he not only shoots more Ft's he makes them. I haven't seen a stat but it seems like Stephs' FT's are up almost entirely because of Butler, they get into the bonus regularly now and then Steph can get to the line on non shooting fouls. If Kuminga starts making his FT's, he's too inconsistent, it will be huge.

I think Dirk’s arc is still what it was but Nash needed to break out somewhere where he controlled everything. Aaron Nelson and the Suns alternative style of training at the time was also key for him.

It was the system. Nash is a fast processor, and he needed to be in a fast system where he literally could process faster than his defenders. Yes he was great, but also his skills fit perfectly with the system we were running. Perfect mesh.

Do you guys/gals want a mega thread for the playoffs? Or single threads for each individual playoff series?
