Overall: McCoy saw limited time as a reserve in his true freshman season in 2001 before breaking out with 30 catches for 640 yards and eight touchdowns as a 13-game starter in 2002. He had 36 receptions for 521 yards and six TD's as a junior in 2003 and 36 receptions for 701 yards and 10 TD's as a senior in 2004. McCoy had good production in college considering the run-heavy offensive scheme he played in. He also had an impressive showing at the combine, where he ran in the low-4.4's, had a 37" vertical jump and ran the short shuttle in 3.94. McCoy is unpolished, lacks toughness, has a questionable character and will have a big leap to make to the NFL. However, because he is such an explosive athlete with big-time vertical speed and the potential to develop into a defense-stretching slot receiver in the NFL, it's likely

Strengths: Has good size, excellent speed and even better agility. Shows excellent COD skills. Is quick and explosive in terms of his lateral movement and ability to stop-and-start. Is a vertical threat. He shows an extra gear with the ball in his hands and he will run away from most defenders in a foot race. He has shown a lot of explosiveness on reverses and also has a lot of upside in the return game if he can get experience.

Weaknesses: Has a questionable character. Was very inconsistent at the collegiate level. Drops too many catchable passes because of a lack of focus. Got by on natural talent alone. Is raw. Needs a lot of technique work in terms of his release, as well as his awareness and footwork as a route runner. His effort as a blocker is inconsistent. He also lacks experience as a return specialist.

Only pick in the draft I don't like. I wanted Browner.

LeRon McCoy

Hometown: Harrisburg, Pa.

OVERVIEW
The three-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection has impressive speed and athletic ability, but has had trouble both on and off the football field in recent years. LeRon was suspended for the 2003 Edinboro game after he punched a Clarion defensive player in the face during the previous week's action. An aspiring singer, he has recorded a rap CD.
McCoy lettered three times in football and twice in basketball at Bishop McDevitt High School. He saw most of his football action at wide receiver but also played some at quarterback and tailback. He caught 11 touchdown passes and set a school single-game playoff record with 194 receiving yards during his junior season. He was selected the team's offensive player of the year and was named to the all-conference squad.

He spent the 2000 season attending Fork Union Military Academy before enrolling at Indiana University. McCoy appeared in 10 games as a freshman, catching eight passes for 234 yards (29.3 avg.) and a touchdown. He moved into the starting lineup the following year, snatching 30 passes for 640 yards (21.3 avg.) and eight touchdowns, earning All-PSAC second-team honors.

McCoy was again chosen second-team All-PSAC in 2003, as he snared 36 passes for 521 yards (14.5 avg.) and six scores. He added 97 yards and two touchdowns on five carries (19.4 avg.) and returned eight kickoffs for 148 yards (18.5 avg.). In 2004, he was earned first-team All-PSAC accolades after catching 36 passes for a career-high 701 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 44 yards and a score on seven carries (6.3 avg.).

In 43 games with the Indians, McCoy caught 110 passes for 2,096 yards (19.1 avg.) and 25 touchdowns. His 110 receptions rank eighth on the school's career-record list and his 2,096 yards rank fifth. Only Carmelo Ocasio (34, 1999-2002) and Jai Hill (41, 1988-91) had more touchdown catches in a career for Indiana. He also gained 222 yards on 12 kickoff returns (18.5 avg.) and carried 16 times for 168 yards (10.5 avg.), including three scores. He also recorded 22 tackles (12 solos) on special teams.

ANALYSIS
Positives: Has good upper body muscle definition and good quickness … Not sudden, but can accelerate quickly … Shows good awareness working the sidelines, doing a nice job of keeping his feet in-bounds … Knows how to use his acceleration to gain separation, as his quickness compensates for a lack of crispness in his route running … More effective working the short area over the middle than on deep outs … Not afraid of contact and does an adequate job of securing the ball when working in traffic … Adjusts well to the ball in flight … Has the upper body power to break some arm tackles … Makes sure that he has the ball properly secured before turning up field.
Negatives: Has skinny legs … Needs to be constantly monitored and motivated … Immature player who has had several off-field incidents and one ugly incident on the field (vs. Clarion in 2003) … Needs to be pushed in practices and in the weight room, as he is the type that has a tendency to shut it down … Is also known for his tardiness and lacks responsibility … Despite his size, he lacks the hand strength to defeat the jam and struggles to get off the line of scrimmage vs. the more physical defenders … Route running needs total refinement, as he rounds off and lacks explosion coming out of his cuts … Relies more on speed than setting up his moves in order to get open … Will generally double catch, resulting in more than a fair share of dropped passes … Does not show the leg drive to break tackles and turn the short catch into a long gain … Simply poor blocker who will not even make an effort … Needs to be heavily involved in the action, as his concentration level is lacking.

INJURY REPORT
2002 -- Severed tendons in his right wrist when he put his hand through a glass table, undergoing surgery on May 21 … Missed two days of practice when he sprained his left big toe (Sept. 14).
2003 -- Tore all the ligaments (class three) in his right shoulder when he separated his AC joint (Oct. 18), but continued to play with the injury the rest of the year.

AGILITY
Campus: 290-pound bench press … 245-pound power clean. Combine: 4.41 in the 40-yard dash … 2.61 20-yard dash … 1.56 10-yard dash … 4.21 20-yard shuttle … 11.27 60-yard shuttle … 7.19 three-cone drill … 37-inch vertical jump … 9-foot-11 broad jump … 33½-inch arm length … 9 3/8-inch hands … Right-handed.

HIGH SCHOOL
Attended Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, Pa.) High School, playing football for coach Jeff Weacter … Lettered three times in football and twice in basketball … Saw most of his football action at wide receiver but also played some at quarterback and tailback … Caught 11 touchdown passes and set a school single-game playoff record with 194 receiving yards during his junior season … Selected the team's offensive player of the year, was named to the all-conference squad and was on the Big 33 preseason all-star team.

PERSONAL
Communications Media major … Son of Daphne and Ronnie McCoy … Born Jan. 24, 1982 … Resides in Harrisburg, Pa.

We got stuck with him because Tampa took Paris away from us. :D Really though, at least we did not get stuck with a reciever named Paris, that name alone dropped him 3 rounds.

Sounds like a raw problem child with amazing athletic potential that Green thinks he can mold.

Yep.

At the very least, he's a 7th rounder. At the most, he's a stud.

It's a 7th round pick, so there was no harm by using it on McCoy.

However, I'm still a bit confused. We took BAP in both the 4th and 5th, but was McCoy BAP there???

They must see something in McCoy that others don't.

Remember Green said he wanted guys who could run....McCoy obviously can do that. IF he works out and develops into a #4 WR great if not who cares he was a 7th round pick.

I expected some obscure athlete at this spot, someone who is not polished but likely a practice squad guy....thats pretty much what we got.

From the way the scouting reports read it will be up to Mr. McCoy to decide if he is going to improve or not.

Were's that racist guy that posted if Matt Jones were black he would be in the lottery? Tall and fast but needs to develop as a reciever. :lmao:

Sounds like you Card fans ran the gamut at the draft. Good job Coach Green has done with this team. I wonder how long it will take for this guy to punch another teamate and end up a a Raiders project? :D

I kind of think this was a homer pick a little, McCoy's is from Denny's hometown of Harrisburg, PA. I would love to have seen us get Chad Owens (went in 6th round to JAX). He is one tough SOB who returns kicks and makes plays. McCoy is a numbers guy only with some character problems.
