At this point, we don't know if Phoenix would pose the same problem to the NBA because you have never gotten that far, have you?

Um, I hate to break it to you, but the Suns have been to the NBA finals twice.

What a joke!!! So you actually think the Spurs draw a bigger market than the Suns? Why don't you read some sports columns? It is widely known that San Antonio is a very small market and doesn't generate much revenue for the NBA. That's why the Spurs 99, 03, and 05 Championships had the LOWEST viewership in NBA history. And Spurs fans are local, NOT statewide. There is no love between Mav, Rockets, and Spurs fans. For the most part, we hate each other. Especially the Mavs and Spurs fans. David Stern and the NBA DO NOT want to see the Spurs advance. They lose mucho $$$$ every time the Spurs reach the finals. At this point, we don't know if Phoenix would pose the same problem to the NBA because you have never gotten that far, have you?

Amen, and I would add that it would be the NBA's wet dream for the Phoenix Suns to win the NBA championship. People love watching the Phoenix Suns. They are a big draw wherever they go, and they play the style of game the NBA wishes every team did. Is a style of play that puts fans in the seat.

Conversely the San Antonio Spurs play the type of game the league would love to see disappear.

If you want a conspiracy where there isn't one ask yourself if it's the other way around. Did the Phoenix Suns finally started getting calls halfway through the fourth quarter yesterday because the league wants Phoenix, not San Antonio, to advance? I think we have an X-File.

So Julie, quick Spurs Quiz:

Do you know who George Gervin is?

FYI: July appears to be among many Spurs fans who believe the NBA will do whatever it can to keep San Antonio out of the Finals. Somehow they let it happen 3 times, but doggonit, they won't allow a fourth. It was the same argument the Mavs beat the Spurs last year. Obviously, the NBA favors the big market Mavs with their marketable star and all their ... scoring. The implication now is the Suns are somehow NBA pretty boys and the NBA would rather have Phoenix.

This, of course, flies in the face of the many obvious conspiracies against Phoenix to even be competitive:

- The trick coin that allowed Lew Alcindor to go to NBA favorite Milwaukee, who were then later forced at gun point to trade him to the big market Lakers when the league learned Laverne and Shirley and the Happy Days cast wouldn't actually sit courtside at Milwaukee home games.

- The grainy footage of league officials feeding Truck Robinson rancid pizza.

- The suspiciously wet floor at the Forum during a preseason game that cut Walter Davis' career short

- The trade Colangelo was forced to make a gun point that sent DJ to Boston for Rick Robey

- The drug "scandal."

- The Portland Trailblazers, who led the world in fouls and technicals during the regular season, but somehow became choir boys in the last 5 minutes of any playoff game.

I could go on, but there's just too much evidence piled up against an anti-Suns conspiracy to not mention it here.

Why hasn't Phoenix, Denver, Portland, Seattle, Utah, Cleveland, Sacremento, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Charlotte, Minnesota, Indiana, Memphis, New Orleans, Toronto, New Jersey, etc.etc. ever been able to land a "super stud" center???

Does anyone know where the current All NBA First Team center plays? :D

When it gets down to it, statisticians who follow demographic trends look at San Antonio and Phoenix using the DMA designation. DMA means Designated Market Area sometimes Designated Media Area. It means the amount of households that have television viewers/radio listeners.

According to Claritas (www.claritas.com -they specialize in demographic info ) Here are the estimated DMA HH Counts for both markets:

2006 Estimate PHX 1,698,457 SA 777,873
The Phoenix HHs outnumber the San Antonio HHs. HHs being households.

That's not that big of difference when compared to the Top 8 markets. I don't think NBA marketing agents look at these numbers and say, "Gosh, Phoenix is so much more enticing than San Antonio." I think they probably say, "Gosh, we have to do some clever marketing if Phoenix or San Antonio are in the finals so we can carry LA, NY, Chicago ..."

That depends if those teams will keep their stars and stop drafting the Adam Morrisons of the draft. Or hiring retread coaches 20 years beyond their best moments. Or keeping the good-ol-boy system in place in their front office. You don't even have to be a small market to have bad mgt. Just look at Atlanta.

Phoenix is an interesting test case. They're not only trying to win a championship, they're trying to do it in a very cavalier way. That usually brings an extra burden in the playoffs. I'm not surprised they've struggled against the Spurs ... that's how it's ALWAYS been, even before Stern. Shoot, the Suns brought in Moe Lucas back in the early 80s because they wanted to get more physical for the playoffs. They felt they lacked that kind of enforcer attitude in the 70s, and they were right.

What's with the stupid questions? Of course, The Iceman is famous in San Antonio. I can't say I was a huge fan because I was a little kid when he played at the old Hemisphere Arena in the 70s...and as most 5 to 8 year old girls, I was more focused on Barbie dolls than Basketball. He is considered among the top 50 players in the league. He was a remarkable player who consistently posted many record stats. Has won several prestigious honors and still lives in San Antonio and is STILL a part of the Spurs team in the back office. This is off the top of my head. I could cheat and google to make it look like I had all his stats down, but I'm not gonna bother. Suffice it to say he is a hero in San Antonio and we all know he was our biggest star until he was traded to the bulls in the mid-eighties. He also does mattress commercials and likes Mexican food from La Fogata where I have seen him on three occassions. Anything else?

See this is where San Antonio used to be before 1999. They used to think the NBA is never going to let a small market team win the title. Then Pop became Vice-President of Basketball Operations and proceeded to change all that. He decided to let his team know that he doesn't give a crap about ratings, and that he wants his team to play a certain style of basketball that he patterned off of Larry Brown, and Jerry Sloan. If they do that, then winning a title was possible. He has 3 rings to show for his commitment.

Mike D'Antoni has to do the same thing, don't give a crap about ratings, play your style and let the chips fall where they may.

There isn't a conspiracy going on against small market teams. Mostly, there were a lot of dumb moves made by small market general managers that big market team took full advantage of. Look up who Ted Stepien was. Some of the moves were Ted Stepien-esqe.

Yes, it was a stupid question for you. But since you didn't know the Suns had played in the Finals (lost to Jordan) I took a shot.

Welcome to the board.

Yes, but can you finger roll? :p

Kidding, of course. Only Ice could finger roll. Cotton used to tell stories how it drove him crazy. I was like, "But Fitz, it was the Iceman!" Hey, Cotton traded Iceman and San Antonio never forgave him.

Nice! The 82-83 team that started DJ, Walter Davis, Larry Nance, Mo Lucas, and Alvan Adams is still probably my favorite. DJ, Nance, and Mo took @#$% from no one, and Davis and Adams were all the offense they ever needed. I think they just needed a little more bench. Too bad, so sad.

and to Havlicek, Cowens, Nelson, etc.......

Actually, I know a few people (and not jsut Spurs fans, I live on the East Coast) who don't realize or have simply forgotten that you've been to the finals. I stand corrected. If HAS been almost 15 years since your last appearance. And before that it was, what, 1976? That's over 30 years. Obviously, I had to look all this up. I couldn't find the other year you made the finals? Enlighten me! BTW....how did those finals work out for you? heh heh

Just because you didn't win a tight shorts title, don't be sad.

The tight shorts era and the titles were very awesome for me...Showtime!!
