For some reason the NBA is in love with small market San Antoinio. I couldn't put my finger on it entirely until I realized even though San Antoinio is small...it is in the gigantic Texas market (comparable to California and New York).

Obviously there must be a lot of "closet" Spurs fans in metro Houston and Dallas and all over the state buying Chevy's and Bud-Lite (commericials that pay the bills for ABC, ESPN, and TNT).

Heck with both the Dallas Mavs and Houston Rockets out of the playoff race (both Texas teams), the NBA "knows" and figures Texans' all over the state will be "tuning in" to view a local state team win a Championship. Texas as a whole is a huge market spending lots of dough on American product(s).

Arizona with only 6 million in the entire state can't compete with the Texas consumer of over 23 million.
23 MILLION consumers in Texas! That there is a lot of trucks, beer and Tim Duncan jerseys that will sell.

San Antoinio will win in 6!

Why? Because the league has been and will always be "fixed". Listen to and hear this FACT. There hasn't been a "non-huge market" team win the NBA Championship since over 30 years ago.

Two Suns starters (Amare and Diaw) will be suspended for Wed. game guarenteeing a Spurs victory all because San Antoinio's Robert Horry "body checked" two-time MVP Steve Nash in the final minutes of the game. Complete chicken-**** and dirty play, but the league ironically will penalize the Phoenix Suns for doing nothing while the Spurs thugs get a way with murder. Game 6 in San Antoinio will go down as one of the worst officiated games ever as the Spurs route the Suns winning the series.

Congrats to the Spurs for "playing" the Jerry Springer slash "politically correct" system-society we live in today, and good luck against Detroit in the Finals.

It's all about which market generates the most "sales" kids. Don't let them kid ya. :)

Funny how I'm pissed (even though the Suns won)!!!

BTW,

I don't agree with any of this, which is how you say it instead of making some whiner reference.

I have never understood the idea that the NBA is fixed.

If the NBA was fixed than Los Angeles and Miami would be playing in the finals. Kobe vrs Shaq. #1 merchandise seller vrs #2. It would be huge.

The last thing the NBA wants from a ratings standpoint would be Detroit/San Antonio. TV Deals is where the real money is and low ratings kill negotiating power. The NBA is praying that Lebron James makes it to the finals, not Detroit.

Unfortunentely in the eyes of the NBA and "corporate" America...Phoenix and Sacremento have more in common than I and the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce would care to admit. lol Lack of corporate $, $, and more $$$. NBA is a well-oiled and financed machine. Texas money outweighs Arizona money by 20 million consumers. It's science. lol :)

In the last 30 years and since David Stern has come aboard in 1984...with the excemption of Miami last season...the NBA Champion has come from American heavy-weight markets...Los Angeles, Chicago, Texas, Detroit, Boston. That's it!!!! Five geographic areas!!! All with MAJOR deep pockets, and millions of fans who buy millions of dollars of product.

So where are the other teams? Why hasn't Phoenix, Charlotte, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Atlanta, Denver, Portland, Utah, Sacremento, Minnesota, Indiana, Orlando, etc. etc. never won a Championship???

In the history of the league...the chances of "other" teams winning is non-existent. Ask yourself...would you be interested in following the NBA if the Charlotte Bobcats or Memphis Grizzlies won 4 out of the last 7 NBA Championships??? Probably not (as would most Americans). What if the Sacremento Kings or Phoenix Suns had won the last 4 out of 7 NBA Championships??? Would you be following this league??? If that were to happen...this league would suck, and people around America would not watch.

David Stern is a genius money maker. Getting 18-20,000 people a night to drive into big-city downtowns every other night to watch a better "sketched" production of the WWF is nothing short of miraculous. We love it as fans...but c'mon...we all know it's fake. :)

If the NBA was fixed, Isaiah wouldn't be the New York GM and Cup-check wouldn't be the LA GM.

FWIW, Texas is a HUGE place, and I doubt they get any more TV viewers in Dallas, Houston, or wherever than they do for a Phoenix game. If they did, Texas would be the No. 1 target market for every advertiser, because they would dwarf even NY, LA, and Chicago.

OTOH, Phoenix is only 15th, but it's considered a desirable market (especially a test market) because there are so many people from elsewhere.

Kareem, Shaq, Hakeem, McHale, Duncan ... I don't suppose the location of the game's best big men had anything to do with it?

But it is ironic how they all wind up where they wound up.

Why hasn't Phoenix, Denver, Portland, Seattle, Utah, Cleveland, Sacremento, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Charlotte, Minnesota, Indiana, Memphis, New Orleans, Toronto, New Jersey, etc.etc. ever been able to land a "super stud" center???

Do all those teams listed above not know that a good center would increase there chances of winning a NBA Championship??? Are they all that stupid, and only guys who work for the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Rockets, and Pistons realize this?

You speak as if great centers come along every draft. This is definitely not true, and drafting one depends on luck. I mean hell, being a Suns and Celtics fan, I'm still extremely bitter that the Spurs got Duncan when the Cs had a 37% chance of getting the #1 pick. Oh how that fateful ping pong ball changed the course of NBA history forever.

Care to expand? Where's the rebuttal? lol

I just dont see all of texas following the spurs.. and its already been proven that when the spurs play in the finals that those are some of the lowest rated finals.. SA is a small market town much like sacramento for the reasons above..

Theres no gaurentee the Celtics would have won a championship if they got Duncan.. You have to have role players and other good players to win it all.. Im not sure the celtics have had a good GM in awhile..

I agree. The Spurs have just been a good team in the Duncan era. I do believe that, over time, the refs in their games have given them some calls and unfortunately adapted their officiating to accommodate the physical style of play Pop brought to SA, once they became accustomed to seeing it day in and day out. I will not argue against the fact that Bowen and Duncan get away with murder on fairly regular basis nowadays.

Oh I know, but it would have been much different. Instead they got Billups, who they traded for like Danny Fortson and some change, and Ron Mercer.

Anyhow, let's stay on the topic at hand. :p

I agree...but I'm still wondering why then does the NBA favor San Antonio. You would think the league would seriously be pushing for the Suns "fun" style of play. For whatever reason the league just isn't really liking it. Or maybe they like it, but when they do the math...they find out that a fun Phoenix team still will not bring in the dollars a Texas team will.

It's just that this league has smelt for the better part of 30 years now, and I happen to believe if this Suns style of play was wearing a Laker jersey...we would be seeing a lot more "favorable" calls for the "fun" team. As it is now...the league is "favoring" San Antoinio and as a NBA fan...I just don't know why. It's gotta be the dollars....

Most of this reasoning and thought process is because I'm assuming the league will suspend Amare and Diaw for absoulutely no reason at all. Again rewarding the Spurs with a playoff series win on a last ditch effort to preserve the Texas market.

Heh. Newbie?

Phoenix and Milwaukee had a coin flip as newbie franchises in '69 for the rights to draft Lew Alcindor. Milwaukee won and proceeded to win ... an NBA championship. Then they traded Alcindor, soon to be known as Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, because Milwaukee mgt. grew up eating the uranium corn flakes.

Portland had a guy named Bill Walton. Oh yeah, they won a championship. Seattle didn't have a great one, but they did have Jack Sikma, who was one of the meanest, ugliest SOBs ever to play center. They won a championship. The Washington BULLETS had Wes Unseld. Oh, they won a championship.

After that came the dynasty era, brought to you by stupid management giving away talent to the big boys, before the free agency period started busting the dynasties. For example, ask yourself how the Lakers were able to pick up James Worthy in they draft the same year they won the championship. Or they had Byron Scott and Jamaal Wilkes drop in their laps. Stupid management. Or doesn't anyone here remember DJ for Robey? How else do you think Boston acquired talent? They couldn't buy it. They just made trades with stupid GMs.

Hey, Michael Jordan went to Chicago as the No. 3 pick in the draft. Hakeem went No. 1 that year, and regardless of Jordan's superior championships, I think the Rockets made the right choice. Portland, other hand, chose Sam Bowie. Maybe if they had stuck to their original choice, Charles Barkley, they wouldn't look so foolish.

The NBA isn't fixed. There are, however, many broken management teams constantly out-thinking themselves.

Well I'd like to believe that...but I wasn't born yesterday.

All those references you mentioned go back before Stern became Commish, and past the 30 year mark I was referring to. I'm aware of those Championship teams you mentioned, but that is "old-school" management before the "fix" was on.

Who hear wants to predict a Championship to a non-major MAJOR market in the next 10 years? lol

Will Charlotte, Sacremento, Milwaukee, Portland, Denver, Minnesota, Indiana, New Orleans, Orlando, Seattle, Clevland, Utah or Phoenix ever win a NBA Championship???

That depends if those teams will keep their stars and stop drafting the Adam Morrisons of the draft. Or hiring retread coaches 20 years beyond their best moments. Or keeping the good-ol-boy system in place in their front office. You don't even have to be a small market to have bad mgt. Just look at Atlanta.

Phoenix is an interesting test case. They're not only trying to win a championship, they're trying to do it in a very cavalier way. That usually brings an extra burden in the playoffs. I'm not surprised they've struggled against the Spurs ... that's how it's ALWAYS been, even before Stern. Shoot, the Suns brought in Moe Lucas back in the early 80s because they wanted to get more physical for the playoffs. They felt they lacked that kind of enforcer attitude in the 70s, and they were right.

The Grizzlies will probably get their stud center later this year, so settle down, the NBA is NOT rigged.

If the NBA was rigged, Tim Duncan would be in Boston, not San Antonio. Boston is a huge market and one of the NBA's premiere franchises historically (them and the Lakers are the top 2), if they wanted to rig things, they'd do everything they could to help Boston.

The NBA isn't fixed.

Americans did land on the moon in 1969.

Lee Harvey Oswald was the one and only killer of JFK.

Andy Kauffman isn't really alive but in hiding.

Will Charlotte, Sacremento, Milwaukee, Portland, Denver, Minnesota, Indiana, New Orleans, Orlando, Seattle, Clevland, Utah or Phoenix ever win a NBA Championship???

Phoenix is a major market, there are 6 million people in Arizona, Phoenix is the countries fifth largest city, and 14th (or so) largest metro area. The Suns will win the title this year.

If the Grizzlies get Oden, and Gasol can stay healthy, I don't see why they couldn't win a title down the road. If Cleveland makes some shrewd moves and holds onto their picks, they could certainly win a title with LeBron. Orlando has a great young center in Dwight Howard and could become a title contender in the next few years.

What a joke!!! So you actually think the Spurs draw a bigger market than the Suns? Why don't you read some sports columns? It is widely known that San Antonio is a very small market and doesn't generate much revenue for the NBA. That's why the Spurs 99, 03, and 05 Championships had the LOWEST viewership in NBA history. And Spurs fans are local, NOT statewide. There is no love between Mav, Rockets, and Spurs fans. For the most part, we hate each other. Especially the Mavs and Spurs fans. David Stern and the NBA DO NOT want to see the Spurs advance. They lose mucho $$$$ every time the Spurs reach the finals. At this point, we don't know if Phoenix would pose the same problem to the NBA because you have never gotten that far, have you?
