This'll be Marchand's fourth game with the Panthers and Carlo's 13th game with the Maple Leafs.
Brandon Carlo is looking forward to facing former Boston Bruins teammate Brad Marchand as the Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers face off in a pivotal division matchup for the first time since the NHL trade deadline.
Boston pretty much emptied their cupboard of players on Mar. 7, sending Carlo to Toronto, Marchand to Florida, Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche, and Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers.
Coyle and Carlo have already faced off twice — even flying together from Boston to Colorado — but Wednesday will be the debut meeting between Boston's former captain and Carlo.
"It will be fun. A lot of battles that I’ve had in practice over the years. He’s a guy that we tried to go against each other in drills just to have that compete level in practice," Carlo said on Wednesday morning.
"So, it will be a different level within the game, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and it will be funny to see him across the hashmark for sure."
Carlo and Marchand were teammates ever since the defenseman made his NHL debut with the club in 2016. They've been through countless gruelling battles together, including a trip to the Stanley Cup final in 2019 and a few first-round wins.
They were good friends off the ice, too, with Carlo mentioning that he and Marchand have traded texts since being traded away from the Bruins. That friendship, however, goes out the window when both players face off against each other on Wednesday.
"You’re going out there to compete and battle for your team regardless and friendships kind of get put aside for the time being," Carlo added, "but afterwards you can throw a text or say hi and go to dinner or whatnot, but overall yeah those things you don’t really think about too much because we’re used to competing against each other for most of our lives."
Since joining Toronto, Carlo has registered one assist and one fight while averaging 18:15 of ice time in 12 games. Marchand, in Florida, has one assist through three games after coming off an injury.
Marchand is an incredible player who can beat you in more ways than one. He can score, he can create plays, and he's not afraid to be physical. What Marchand is best at, though, is getting under his opponent's skin.
One half is from the physicality, while the other half is from his chirping.
"It’ll be interesting to see what kind of dirt he has on me tonight, but maybe he’ll leave it off to the wayside, but I’m sure I’ll hear something," Carlo smiled. "I’m not sure what it will be, but it will definitely be something."
Carlo doesn't believe he'll see a different side of Marchand than he has in the past. The forward is often touted as one of the more annoying players to face, given his ability to get under people's skin, but Carlo has seen just about everything being his teammate for nine seasons.
"I think he’s still a little bit of a mystery at times," Carlo added, "but overall, yeah, I know him pretty well so I don’t think anything he’ll say or really do will surprise me too much."
It's a new team, though. And with the likes of Marchand and Sam Bennett — two of the pestiest players in the NHL — on the same line, fireworks are always possible, especially when the stakes are as high as they are with first in the Atlantic Division on the line.
