Take if for what it's worth as its from ProFootball Talk.

NOLAN IN THE BALANCE

Another head coach whom many presumed to be safe could end up out of a job.

49ers coach Mike Nolan's press conference, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. local time on Monday, was first bumped by two hours and then canceled.

Nolan currently is meeting with ownership.

It has been reported that V.P. of player personnel Scot McCloughan is expected to be named General Manager. His first order of business could be hiring a new head coach.

In three years under Nolan, the 49ers are 16-32.

Checked the 49er message board and it appears that all scheduled press conferences today were first delayed and then cancelled. Their board is going crazy with talk of Nolan being canned.

Singletary would be a mistake, they need somebody that is an offensive minded coach.
Alex Smith can be shown the door as far as i'm concerned:mad:.

Press conference for today has been canceled

Mike Nolan and John York are currently meeting and the scheduled 4 p.m. press conference has been postponed.

OK, so what does it mean?

Well, it obviously means the Yorks are not completely convinced that Mike Nolan should be the head coach next season.

This follows the pattern.

--The 2002 season ended when the 49ers lost to the Buccaneers in the playoffs on Jan. 12, 2003. York called Steve Mariucci, who was home watching "Joe Millionaire" on TV on a Monday night. Finally, on Wednesday, Jan. 15, York fired Mariucci during a meeting that was so long that everybody knew Mariucci had been fired before he left York's office. In fact, Mariucci's wife heard the news on the radio and immediately drove to the 49ers' offices. She was waiting for her husband in his office.

--The 2004 season ended with a road loss to the Patriots on Jan. 2, 2005. York held extensive meetings with Terry Donahue and Dennis Erickson. Finally, on Jan. 6, York decided to fire both men.

So, again, this is the question: What does all this mean?

UPDATE: The meeting includes Jed York, too.

Why would firing Nolan would be good for us? And I hope Alex Smith remains their QB. Even though they beat us twice this year, but this combination would be good for us.

I fail to see how firing a terrible Head Coach would be beneficial to their opponents.

It wouldn't be...if we were talking about firing a terrible head coach. We aren't. We're talking about a fairly good coach getting fired. I'm hoping it happens, get Mike Nolan out of my division.

Nighthawk welcome aboard. You'll find this board better by leaps and bounds over the "other" Cards forum. I agree but for a different reason. When a coach is canned it usually takes a year or two to recover under the new system. With SF collecting young talent this shake-up could be good for us especially with them picked to be the darlings of the NFC West.

This should hold SF back for a year or two, that coupled with a crappy QB, and the fact that they traded away a top ten pick this year assures that they will not be a threat for quite some time. SEA is getting old as is STL is it a VERY good time to be a Cards fan. 15 years of waiting for a deep playoff run comes to an end this year!!!

I've seen every Niner game the past 3 seasons. Mike Nolan is a terrible, terrible head coach who throws people around him under the bus to avoid accountability of his failures.

I agree that Nolan is a good coach, and would benefit us if he is gone. The biggest mistake that team made was two many free agent pick ups, players don't gel, and then people lose their job. Very rarely does the winner of the free agency game do well, the exception would be the pats this year, the norm would be the skins.

He's staying.
No excuses for Mike Nolan next year. Although i don't think Alex Smith is going to be the starting quarterback next year.

Nolan will not be fired, but he's losing all General Manager power and will remain as Head Coach only. Guess it's another season of poor game managent, terrible in-game decisions and mediocre veteran players starting over younger, hungrier and more talented back-ups, along with the stubbornness of refusing to change anything 7 games into an 8-game losing streak.

Ownership made a good decision, I think. Nolan might be a decent coach but his free agent extravagances were a disaster.

what

if nolan is canned and they hire Billick...that would be bad for us IMO and good for the Niners though I do not think Nolan is a bad coach at all.

Firing Mike Nolan would just be another bonehead John York move. York is the one who should be fired, but he is married to the owner's daughter, or something like that.

Great for Cards, Seahawks , Rams because he is a damned good coach who squeezes good performances out of a building team. They are a QB ( Shaun Hill might be the short term answer) and a few WRs away from being a winning team. This is a ten deep QB draft and they can get a good project from it. They have had great drafts in the last 2 years and Nolan is responsible for getting the on the field early, i.e. Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, etc.

York is the idiot responsible for signing Clements to that huge $$$$ contract, not Nolan. Clements is fine CB, but $80 mil?????? York signed Darrell Jackson to the big FA contract. York is the one who sent this year's #1 pick to New Englan for the right to pick Joe Staley last year. Staley has worked out well, but in retrospect to trade a #5 pick this year for last years' # 28 wasn't a good value exchange.

The Clements deal it is so blown out of proportion. It is not an 80 Mill deal. First 27.25 of that 80 Mill accounts for the last 2 years. Second if he makes the team in 2008 the eighth year is voided and the the deal is essential a 7 year 64.02 Mill deal. His cap charge the first year of the deal and his second year of the deal is about 11 Mill each year. Not really that bad considering they had more cap space then any other team. By the time year 3 rolls around his contract will be down right cheap comparatively to other contracts that will be given out between now and 2009 offseason and the continued rise of the cap.

Please let it be Martz. Gore and their run game will be under utilized and Smith or any other QB will get pounded all year long.

They're denying they have made any inquiries about Martz yet.

it's a horrible situation Tim Kawakami said he's now an even bigger lame duck. Nolan's contract gave him personnel decision authority so he had to waive that to keep his job, essentially they say he asked management not to fire him and in exchange agreed to fire Hostler and give up his GM duties. So he's completely undermined his authority now, probably the best thing but he clearly lost respect with the team.

The Smith situation will be fascinating to play out. I think Nolan will be better with less responsibility now he needs a real OC and he needs to make a decision on Smith quickly and either patch things up or open the job up to competition.
