Jesus, after getting harrowing news from the board front, this bad news breaks and makes our sad evening even worse..

It's just been reported on ESPN Radio's Bobby V show that 49er Offensive Lineman Thomas Herrion has passed away after collapsing in the lockerroom following Saturday's game with Denver.

The lineman was on the field for San Francisco's 14-play, 91-yard drive that ended with a touchdown with 2 seconds left in the game.

Herrion, a first-year player with the 49ers, played college ball at Utah with the top pick in the 2005 NFL Draft and current Niner Alex Smith. He spent part of last season on the San Francisco and Dallas practice squads and also played this season with the Hamburg Sea Dogs of NFL Europe.

He was 23 years old.

This is truly sad and shocking indeed.. It also puts all the contract ******** in to a real perspective.

RIP Thomas Herrion, a life taken far too soon :(

not that it lessens the grief of his family and friends, but he went out a winner on the field, filled with happiness.

Every once in a while we are brought back to earth on what is important in life. A young man leaving this earth much to early playing a game. A game he loved. Rest in peace big guy.You have a prayer from me.

Man that's terrible, we heard he'd collapsed last night and I immediately assumed it was altitude and that he'd be ok because Denver medical personnel would be so used to that.

What a tragedy.

It's just awful when something like this happens. When Corey Stringer died I thought that would be the last of this type of stuff to happen. With a full medical staff and extensive testing on players this is just unnaceptable.

Sometimes peoples hearts and what not are just no up to par and when they exert themselves to a huge degree it's gonna fail.

JV Cain died for the Cardinals like this, Mizzou just lost a linebacker like this, I think that sometimes it's just peoples time to go.

I've heard before that some of these things are almost beyond most testing routines. I mean if you want to put all the players through batteries of tests like they used to do for the astronaughts it might work otherwise things like this are still going to happen.

It's very sad and once again it proves that life is short and nothing is for sure.

That is awful news. My dad told me some offensive lineman dont live long after football. I heard he was up to 350 at some point.Daryl Kile of the baseball Cardinals died at 32 years old in his sleep. He had some kind of heart condition. If this can happen to a pro athlete it can happen to anyone

FYI apparently Herrion told an ex college teammate who's on the Broncos "I don't know how you handle this altitude, I played at Utah but on that last drive I was just dying." The SF Chronicle reported it this morning, so it appears my original guess about altitude might have been correct.

What a horrible thing.

Anyone see the article in the Repblic today? Intersting. Made the point that these players are 100 lbs heavier than last decade. Not 100 lbs of muscle, high body fat.
And is it fair (for lack of a better word) that these guys are after your 180 lb quarterback?. It is amazing more haven't been hurt/killed.

As a Niner fan I can tell you that I was completely shocked that this happened. You never expect anything of this caliber to happen to your ball club, so when it does it really hits home. After reading what all of you said, I'd like to thank you for being such classy NFL fans. I'm sure there are some sick fans in Dallas who are getting a kick out of this right now.

It really makes me think if the NFL should put a 300 lb. weight limit for it's players. Unfortunately I think that would ultimately cause more problems than it would fix. I'm sure there would be some players that would ballon up to 320 during the offseason and then do something strenuous to their body (i.e. diet pills, overexertion) to get back down to the weight limit.
