50 Movies to See Before You Die

I hear ya.

As for why the jump, I have no idea. My guess is that we're seeing maybe the students in a summer class somewhere all getting on imdb. Don't know for sure what the deal is.

I don't understand why these would jump from nowhere to the top 250:

The Lost Weekend (I actually saw this and liked it, not sure why it jumped to #228 in May though, I would think that it would take a long time to move since it's old and has several votes already)
Central do Brasil - never heard of it, but it broke thru and landed at #239

I used to really like the top 250 (obviously if I actually downloaded the listing every day). However, it lost all credibility when it started to change in such arbitrary ways.

It also probably shows that the borderline of the last 30 or 40 movies on the list (#210-250) probably have the same number of votes, or at least, the same averages, and that's why it fluctuates so much--there's probably thousands of movies that are around that 250 spot, and in any given month, the 250 might not get any votes, and the 260 gets 10 votes, then the 250 drops out and the 260 suddenly enters. That's the only thing I can think of.

It's my favorite of all time.
Who would have thought that Shirley McClain was a hottie in the day?

If you read it carefully, it just says 50 movies to see before you die, NOT that they are the top 50 films of all time.

Even so, if you put your top 50, or if I put MY top 50, there would be a lot of disagreement. If you disagree, that's fine, but does that mean they are wrong?

That said, Mulholland Drive is definitely a terrific movie.

I did read carefully...but I wouldn't put that one in any Top 50 before you die list...

It also probably shows that the borderline of the last 30 or 40 movies on the list (#210-250) probably have the same number of votes, or at least, the same averages, and that's why it fluctuates so much--there's probably thousands of movies that are around that 250 spot, and in any given month, the 250 might not get any votes, and the 260 gets 10 votes, then the 250 drops out and the 260 suddenly enters. That's the only thing I can think of.

I decided to start updating my spreadsheet again, it takes me less than a minute to update my pivot table. There doesn’t appear to be any new crazy movements. I wonder if they made an adjustment to their formula back in May.

The minimum number of votes needed to qualify for the list is 1,300 and each of the movies I mentioned are well above that. These older movies average between 4 and 20 votes per day, so I just can’t see new votes being a factor in these dramatic movements.
