Yeah, Diallo seems like the one miss so far. But it's early so hopefully someone can teach him how to play the game before we find ourselves needing yet another big man. And with the way we draw fouls, that's almost bound to happen sometime.
The great thing about it is even if Diallo doesn't improve and does prove to be a mistake, he was a cheap mistake. Which is also not something the sun's are used to

Keeping himself affordable for later. ;)

I do hope he gets going again since it seems Jerome won't return for a couple more weeks. I hope we'll have Jerome back by the time the homestand is over. That's my own personal estimate of when I'd like to see him debut, the end of this 6 game stretch.

It's hard to say but one of the things that made Jevon Carter effective beyond beyond his defense was the ability to keep defenses honest with his shooting. He doesn't get a lot of assists although he can run a team.

This leaves the door open for Ty Jerome or someone else to step up at point guard. It might force Tyler Johnson to focus on the point guard role again like last season.

Don’t get me wrong but I love carter with what he brings. I don’t think he can sustain those shooting percentages we saw early. I don’t think he can run the team long term. His energy and hustle might be better off in short spurts or situations.

Tyler seems to be the most complete out of the backup guards.

I'm not saying he's the best player in the league but when you consider that he WANTS to be here, I wouldn't trade him for anyone. But I wouldn't have traded him for anyone last year either. I've never bought into the narrative that he can't or won't play defense nor did I agree with the naysayers that he was nothing more than an inefficient chucker. As a Phoenix Sun, he was ALWAYS a star in waiting, mostly just waiting for actual NBA teammates.

I can't agree with this more. I thought about the question, "Who in this league would you trade Booker for right now?" and other than Giannis, no one made me think twice. Not Steph, Kyrie, Westbrook, Harden, Lillard, Kemba, or Klay. Those are all of the guards who have been All-NBA ahead of Booker the last couple of years. Of them, who has had had a better year than Booker to start? I don't think I'm being a homer by saying he's had the best first 2 weeks of a guard in the league.

The guy has played a whopping 6 mins thus far this season... Not really sure how a determination can be made as to his value on this team, when he hasn't even been on the court?

Who in this league would you trade Booker for right now?

Anthony Davis . . . hmmm. Giannis. That's about it.

Not me personally, but most if not all GMs would put Harden above booker. Also Jokic. If we play the Bill Simmons "Who Say No?" game, Booker is also behind Doncic and Williamson. My guess is that, if you were to break it down carefully, he's around 15th-20th in trade value across the league.

This is one of the reasons I mentioned Jevon going scoreless for a number of games. I hope it's an aberration but if not, it may eventually force him into a defensive specialist role and limit his minutes. The Suns need to see what Ty Jerome can do when he gets back.

He played 2 minutes in Denver and was taken off the court because of those 2 minutes. It was pretty apparent he didn't offer much when he got time during preseason. I'm not saying he's going to kill our season or cost us any wins, I just don't think he's very good and I'd love to replace him with someone who doesn't look so lost while on the floor. He's like a cross between Bender and Chriss, has alot of the same physical gifts Marquise had but doesn't quite know how to apply them, like Bender.

He is a vet min player at the end of the bench. Can't really call that a miss. Those guys only play in emergencies.

For any Sixers fans who might say that we beat them
because they were without their Center Embiid . . . . .

So were we! Here is an interesting stat.

Our journeyman fill-in Center Baynes +/- was a +19 in 31 minutes.

Their journeyman fill-in Center Horford +/- was a -1 in 34 minutes.

The odds were even and the Suns took charge!

Put that in your cheesesteak, Philadelphia! :)

Well I won't put it in my cheesesteak (mushrooms, fried and raw onions only. LOL) but I will give the Suns props where they are due. Would Embiid have helped? Absolutely, But your boys balled out and did what was necessary to come out with a gritty win. Personnel excuses are for losers IMO. It is what it is, and you've got to find a way to get it done. We didn't, Thus the L.

That's my point... I didn't call him a "miss." I think for an end of the bench, last-ditch guy, ya get what ya get...

OK. I agree that his value is not recognized that well across the league yet. Who would YOU trade Book for right now.

Harden, I would not. Book is a more complete player at the moment and then there is the age thing and all.
Jokic. Yep. Might do that one.
Donic. Tough one. That's close
Williamson. A month ago, maybe, now? Scared about health.

Analyzing the great start, and overall difference, in this team, one has to put in a word for... addition by subtraction, too.

No more low basketball IQ or general all around flakes on the roster like Josh Jackson or Marquese Chriss. No sulking "I'm too good for this" attitude cases like TJ Warren and Trevor Ariza. No more "lost in space and don't really know how to play" cases like Dragan Bender.

Jones has turned around the roster not even so much in terms of talent, but almost more in terms of guys with the right attitudes and basketball intelligence. It really does go to show how little a clue McDonough had about identifying the kind of players who would fit together as a real team, vs. just going after guys who looked good in a workout. had a high profile reputation, or otherwise were more flash than substance.

Well I detest Harden as a player, but I think it would be pretty foolish to pass on him. Harden just turned 30 and his routine performances are at the level of Booker's best.

It's impossible to judge a Jokic swap without knowing more about where Ayton is. But if we were to contemplate something like Jokic and Murray for Ayton and Booker, I think you have to take the Nuggets' duo.

I still think we need a larger sample size to know about Doncic, but the early returns are that he projects to be more of an impact player than Booker. And, if you're running a franchise, you have to think about the hype machine that Doncic brings with him as well, which is like nothing I've seen since LeBron James.

Hmmm. I would think that when I said "so far" that it would be recognized as an acknowledgement that it isn't a final judgement nor is it a prediction. Other than wait till his career is over, I can't think of another way to point out the shortcomings we've seen in his very few minutes. And not that it fixes the small sample issue but we did get to see him in preseason too and it was not pretty.

I was agreeing with you in your disagreement with Steve.

Really? So, to date, you think his play suggests he is NOT a miss?

Like you, I expect almost nothing form the end of the bench players but I'd bet a lot of money that he will beat the odds and turn it around to become a decent player or Jones will consider him a wasted acquisition. Right now, when he gets out there, he looks just like the other clueless draft picks we've brought in that James worked so hard to divest ourselves of. Sure, we look at him as the last guy on the bench now but when we brought him in, that really wasn't the narrative. He was supposed to give us what we lost in Holmes and that's not happening. So far.

I thought Baynes was brought into replace Holmes and Diallo was an end of the bench player.
His 1 year salary of $1,678,854 would suggest that.

However, I do think even the 14th or 15th player should be able to play if necessary. Lecque might be an exception as he is mostly a development player.

I'd pass on Jokic. He's a tremendous player but he has weight and training issues and I don't like his long term forecast as a result. I'd pass on Zion too despite how much I love the guy, too much injury risk. I wouldn't touch Harden either, I believe his style of play probably sets a non-championship ceiling for his team. If we were starting a team from scratch with no Phoenix baggage, I'd take Giannis over him for sure and probably Kat and maybe Doncic.
