I rated Patrick the #3 top TE in the draft. At Pick #142 (in the 5th round after we picked) I had him #7th best available player who could help us on my mini-board. When we picked at #215, he was top remaining guy on my mini-board.

He's a terrific value in the 7th round - more of a pass catcher than a blocker, and we need a blocker. I'm hoping we can add Pudewell (if he isn't drafted) as a UDFA.

Again, why the slide on him? Day 2 TE picks ahead of him. Round 4) Chandler and Milner. Round 5) Boss,Rosario and Delek. Round 6) None.

I like that there was no one selected at the pos. for 40 picks before we took him. Again, why?

Who cares? Teams have a lot of agendas on day 2 that we have no clue about. Just because he slid doesn't mean everyone hated him but us.

Besides, it's just a 7th round pick, the "risk" is minimal.

Why you ask? Because of the schools he played for. seriously duke and Deleware doesn't strike people as top notch schools to play for.

Delaware is an excellent school to play for - great winning tradition, great fans, etc. Rich Gannon was a Hen.

The Blue Hens were 4-6 or 5-6 this season. Is that the great winning tradition you talk about.

Delaware is 1-AA, and yes, they are noted for having a great football tradition. They've won a championship or two recently.

Here is the best write up of him from the huddlereport.

"Ben plays like he is bored! He has way too much athleticism not to have very good quickness, but he does not show quickness at all. He doesn’t show the quickness out of his stance, in blocking or in running his routes. I’m thinking that he might have a problem learning his assignments, is thinking too much and not just reacting and doing. If that’s not the problem, then he does not have the quickness to be effective at the NFL level. It’s just that simple!

Ben’s pure athleticism warrants him being looked at in this draft, but his lack of quickness, or maybe passion, to play the game gives him only a free agent look-see in a camp. If he has a learning problem, then you have to take that into consideration and just maybe he is worth a late round pick and the practice squad until he can get up to speed. Ben has a long way to go before he can play effectively for a team in the NFL."

The video they showed of him during the draft I have to agree. He may have timed well in the 40 but he just looked plain old slow and cumbersome. Either he just isnt trying, thinking to much, just that non-agile, or a combo of all 3.

He fell to the 7th for a reason. Thats becuase he just wasnt very high on most teams draft boards by their scouts. I am not going to get giddy about a so called steal who whould have went 3-4 rounds before we picked them. like elton Brown, Blackstock, and enter any other player we picked under Greens tenure.

First losing season in awhile, won the National Championship 4 years ago. Delaware takes it's football very seriously.

Right, thanks. Before everyone starts calling him steal and real value, lets see what made him available. Because teams certainly heard some good things about him and his name was one that was thrown around alot leading up to this draft. Bottom line...it's LIKELY he won't make it. But they didn't have much to lose making this pick.

On the contrary I think he will make it on the final roster. There's just something about this kid I think he's a poor mans Heath Miller. Plus he's an H back like Whiz was. I think this is our best 7th round pick in a long time if not ever.

Here's hoping. He's got alot of work to do.

I know they do. What I am saying is that Patrick didn't get a lot of pubilicity transferring from Duke and playing only one season with Deleware. If he played 3 season with the Blue Hens than I believe he would have gone where all these draft gurus thought he would have gone.

At 6-feet-3 and 252 pounds, Patrick isn't as tall as teams would like...

I found this quote on cbssportsline, I think it was. What can this possibly mean? Would teams really care about him only being 6'3"?

The team's Most Valuable Player competed as a quarterback, tight end, linebacker and punter in 2001. He led the team in passing yards, receptions and tackles that season.
Dude was throwin' passes to himself!!!

He's Q2...

Being a Delaware alum, I've been a Blue Hen fan but now that Big Ben Patrick is with the Cardinals, I've become an Arizona fan ;)

No analyst or sportswriter had Ben ranked lower than fourth going into the Draft and I have no idea why he dropped so far. His stock soared leading up to the Draft because of his solid combine stats, athleticism and ability to make tough catches in coverage during his strong appearances at the Shrine Game and Senior Bowl. Ben led the Blue Hens (as well as all Div. I-AA TEs and perhaps all Div. I TEs) with 64 receptions for 639 yards and 6 scores for an average 58.1 yards per game in 11 games. He visited with the Eagles and Jets before the Draft and met with the Vikings during the Senior Bowl. Troy Smith commented on Ben's athleticism: "I have to give it to him. He came in here and made all sorts of plays." When Ben made a tough catch in coverage in practice during the Shrine Game, a Giants scout shouted, "Now that's what I'm talkin' about!"

Besides his stats, Ben was a two-time team captain at Duke before transferring, and he took it upon himself to help teach and coach the other Blue Hen TEs after practices. Although Delaware has had a bumpy road recently :)bang:), Head Coach KC Keeler and OC Kirk Ciarroca, Ben's coaches last season at UD, did lead the Hens to a national championship in '03. Ben does need to work on his blocking and wants to improve his speed (he's not much of a down field threat or a burner), which is why he lost 20 lbs leading up to the Draft. He was a class act at Delaware, an upstanding student athlete with no skeletons, flags or baggage. Ben considers himself an every-down TE and will work his butt off to improve -- and prove -- his game.

Here's some pre-Draft commentary, interviews and info on Ben:

. One thing you do know the cardinals didn't reach for any of their picks. All in all the cardinals had a pretty good draft. At least I like it.

Excellent observation and I totally agree with you. This was a very thoughtful draft and I foresee KW really usuing the roster to its fullest extent depending on the situation.
