So, we should expect to start contending in, what, 2 or 3 years after a nice, slow rebuild? Like, when our QB's cap hit is through the roof? Keim has painted us into a corner by not building a better roster for years. Now he doesn't have the time for the pragmatic approach. He's created too much of a talent deficit at key positions. Little patches at non-starting spots are certainly not going to be enough. If this kid does get his head turned around to become the QB we need him to be, we have to have a good enough team around him. And we do not, and most don't see how we can possibly.

And what? We should continue doing bad business and overpaying FA's so fans can fool themselves into feeling better?

You're going to moan about the way Keim has done business for years AND moan when he changes it up? Can't have it both ways.

The main difference between you and me is that you see the young guys we plan to start like Moore, Collins, Simmons, Wilson and possibly Gladney and see failure. I see young guys that have a tonne of potential and can be better than what we had before them and should be given the room to fulfill their potential.

Which is, after all, what we have been asking this team to do for years. Get younger.

Which is the crux of my issue with darksiders. There are no good faith arguments.

"We need to get younger. We never play draft picks. Keim signs too many vets. He blows too much money on FA contracts" soon becomes "We're too young. These kids aren't good enough. We haven't spent enough in FA. We need more vets" as soon as he starts doing what you asked for all along.

Actually, I hold out hope for Simmons and Wilson to develop. I'm content to roll with Collins at LBer because it's a fait accompli. I never wanted him or Rondale Moore, and I didn't see anything to change my mind...yet. I'm content to roll with RM at #3, because we have to. That's why getting a #2 WR so crucial to our chances. Gladney? We'll see how he does. I'd still like us to add another talented QB (not some depth body) and Hamilton as a #5, because you really need a lot of quality at CB, especially when we won't have much of a pass rush to protect them.

Like I said on another thread, it sounds like you're willing to have a down year for future progress. Though I don't agree with the approach, I can now understand your stance.

Is your theory that these guys are all actually good but in a bad situation? All of them? Even Calvisi says that if Hicks were back he’d still be starting at ILB.

I don’t think many here are saying “we need to get younger.” You’re hearing what you want to hear. People ARE saying “I wish we drafted better young players who can earn their way into the starting lineup.”

Throwing Tanner Vallejo overboard so he can’t take reps from Simmons doesn’t make Simmons any better. What a dumb argument.

I think Brit has set a new record: moaning about posters more than the posters moan about the roster. Impressive feat.

It’s funny reading you guys. I have never met a more gloomy group. Everyone saying “ill bet the under and make bank”. We’re the same people last year that said “I’ll bet the under and make bank” lol. The cardinals lost their 2 best players on both sides of the ball last year. If DHop stays healthy we win 2 more games last year. If Watt stayed healthy we win 2 more games. You can’t take major pieces off the board and expect us to be great. This year it will be the same thing. Are we healthy. Plus there could be trades. Kiem is good at those splash trades. I could see a Barkley trade happening. But we easily could win 11 games next year
Bet the over last year, made a little bank. Will likely bet the under this year if anything. It is less emotional than you make it out to be. We play in a tough conference and while we lose 2 games vs Russell Wilson, we gain out of conference games vs the AFC West and then add the Patriots. Good news is that we also play the NFC South, but Carolina has whipped us every year so...not quite as confident there.

The number is likely 9, some of it will depend on how the schedule is set up. I agree that anything can happen in a season but you have to take the info you have at this point. Hopkins staying healthy is reasonable expectation because he has consistently been over his career. Watt, not so much. Kyler, likely to miss a coupe games.

That's not my position at all. You're right on the future progress. I don't believe that means this will be a down year.

The Niners made it to the NFCCG finishing 3rd in the division. They were leading 17-7 in the 4th and were 4 points away from the Superbowl. We don't have to be 7-0 or 10-2 and blow teams away out the gate. We just have to do enough to make the playoffs, try stay healthy and have good depth to finish the season if we don't. From there anything can happen.

The 2008 Cardinals team weren't great. They were fortunate to be in a bad division and creep over the line and we seconds away from winning it all.

The Bengals roster last year was nothing special but made it all the way by hitting form at the right time.

No, I don't believe at all that this has to be a down year.

Talk about bad faith arguments: you’ve aggregated a bunch of People’s individual legitimate arguments into a false boogeyman who espouses all of them. It’s literally the epitome of a bad faith argument. You want to call someone out as being hypocritical be prepared to do it in an individual basis with actual facts as someone did with your use and then dismissal of the pro bowl.

WTF does Calvisi know? You lost me at line one if you think he knows anything. I mean clearly the team don't think that or they would have kept him.

And I'm not hearing what I want. People have banged on for years about getting younger and not signing old vets.

Players get better by playing. You can't expect players to get better from none contact walk throughs and tackling practice. Guys like Patrick Queen and Kenneth Murray were throw into the far to learn the hard way. They certainly didn't earn their starting spots because both sucked as rookies but their teams took the lumps for the long term gain while Simmons twiddled his thumbs.

Collins started perfectly fine last year. I don't know why they made the decision to limit his time but it certainly wasn't evident in his play.

The only "dumb" thing around here is the constant negativity.

IF? IF? Every team in the league has IF GAMES. If the Vikings kick a 38 yard fg we lose. They don’t post “ IF” standings.
Yes, IF you bet the under last year you would have lost.
I don’t see how anybody on this site can feel we are better or in the same position last year. We are not. Personnel wise we are worse.

This is a statement made by a guy that has zero idea what Collins assignments were. It belies reasoning that Vance just benched him for no reason or a personal vendetta - the unlikelihood of which is massive.

Not to mention that while the coaches have say, keim makes the personnel decisions. You know, the guy that named Collins starter the day he was drafted and allowed hicks to seek trades. Wonder whose decision it was to jettison hicks, vance or keim?

Ouchie, we suck. I have no idea how anyone following this team can think things are okay. Even the sunshine boys ( you know who you are) either are worried about Kyler or the coaching staff or both.
Hopkins went down and it completely dismantled this offense. That alone is sad. But go through free agency watching Kirk walk away as well as Green ( who cares) but everything is okay.
We are going into this draft desperate, DESPERATE for an edge rusher and a Wr. Let alone anything else. We could have brought in a Wr at an average Market price but we didn’t. Right now teams can triple team Hopkins.
Not to worry. Keim has a plan.

See, I don’t think we “suck,” but I can’t understand how anyone can believe we could possibly be as good as, much less better, today than we were at seasons end other than getting hop back healthy. I can understand them hoping that’s the case based on events that (a) haven’t yet unfolded, (b) been revealed to us, and (c) just plain old wanting be optimistic.

The truth is the following (even looking with rosiest of glasses) today:

QB: Kyler could mature and improve - this would have a massive impact on the team, but isn’t by any means guaranteed. Colt is great insurance but we shouldn’t need him if we are to have a truly successful season.

RBs: tough to argue we are in as good, much less better, place here. Bringing Conner back was necessary but a wash. Eno may replace some of chase’s production but doubt he fills all of it (he’s just not as talented). So here is a downgrade at present.

WRs: getting hop back is obviously a plus. Hopefully he is back to 100% and stays healthy. As of now we have lost kirk and green. Whilst I wasn’t enamored of either, their production has to be replaced. As I’ve said earlier, if we are counting on Moore (who to date is unproven as downfield target like kirk and aj) to fill kirk’s role then we are missing aj and moore’s production (I doubt anyone believes Moore will generate both his and kirks production from last year). Yes we can resign aj, but (a) he’s a year older, (b) he’ll be in the system for a second year (so those two items might be a wash for me, and most importantly (c) he’s not under contract. In other words, no one has replaced his and moore’s production at present. So really we need an additional two receivers. Can it happen? Of course. But that’s not the reality today. And there’s no promise it works out for the positive or negative.

TE: this is an overall upgrade on last season if max comes back healthy. But even that’s an if.

OL: this was a wholly average unit last year with an enormous hole at RG. At present it returns intact with the lone potential “upgrade” (likely a 50-50 proposition) being addition of hernandez. Could jones improve? Yes. Could murray stay healthy? Yes. Are both likely? Difficult to say. Is hernandez an upgrade? Jury’s out. Hopefully Hudson and the rest of the line stays healthy (not a guarantee with Pugh, Hudson and beachum all 32, 33 and 33 when season starts).

DL: really all hinges on JJ’s health. The rest all, for the most part, JAGs. Could they improve? Sure, but none have flashed star, or even above average (maybe Zach Allen), talent. And JJ’s health is always a question mark. So this seems static to last season at present.

LB: hopefully Simmons takes a step forward and Collins earns his starting spot. There is talent there, but at present we are hoping both are capable of improving (a LOT for Collins). The signing of the minny kid is good depth, but I think we can all admit a downgrade from hicks in overall ability. So from the roster last year a net negative in overall talent but with hope hinging on improved play of one young, and one completely unproven, players. OLB we have proven golden who is good but not a star, kennard who is likely average, and caveman back from injury. While the loss of cj isn’t as steep a drop as it would’ve been from previous years it’s still the loss of an at least average to above average talent that hasn’t been replaced. So at a minimum our depth is worse at OLB at present. Overall the LB spot should be viewed as less talented but hopefully more impactful due to the two young ILBs.

CB: Byron is solid and hopefully takes another step forward. Wilson was playable and is physically gifted. Hopefully being thrown into the fire last season has him better prepared this year. Adding gladney is a wildcard. Drafted high but no tape for a while. No Alford resigning is a loss as he was pretty darn good last season until injured. At present we are hoping the Alford-for-gladney is a wash and then incremental improvement from Byron and Wilson. Need more depth.

S: strength of defense. As good as last year. Maybe incremental improvements from Thompson’s.

So overall we are likely at present less talented in terms of depth, worse than last season at rb and wr, but hopefully going to realize improvement from youth at QB, LB and CB plus whatever we draft (I’m not counting any future signings or trades because those are 100% complete conjecture at this point).

Calvisi is a water-carrier for the team. Why would he say it if it wasn't true?

Who are these people banging on for years about getting younger? A lot of people, including me, have chided Keim for HAVING to sign old vets because very few of his draft picks develop. The problem isn't really filling in your roster with veterans, it's having to rely on a bunch of these singings because your mid-round picks don't turn into anything.

I actually disagree with the argument that "players get better by playing." I think that players get betting by practicing and training. I think they show their value by playing.

Kenneth Murray played fewer games in his second year and was worse. What is your point here -- that he's a Ram?

Patrick Queen was defensive rookie of the year. How did he suck? His stats in Year 2 were nearly identical. What are you even talking about?

Both Isaiah Simmons and Zaven Collins yielded snaps to ostensibly less-talented players as the season came on. If you choose to believe that's because of a conspiracy among the coaches to play worse players because reasons, that's up to you. My guess is that the coaching staff were making decisions around playing time because they were focused on helping the team win more games.

It should honestly be shocking to you that Simmons and Collins were showing so little in practice that the coaching staff couldn't even give them the benefit of the doubt because they're more talented/high round picks.

Corey Peters played 1/3 of the snaps on the DL last season. Jordan Phillips still played over a quarter of the defensive snaps. We've replaced these guys with no one thus far. We're probably worse with a thinner rotation.

Well Kenneth Murray is a Charger and Patrick Queen didn't win DROTY. So I think we can end this here.

QB: Kyler could mature and improve - this would have a massive impact on the team, but isn’t by any means guaranteed. Colt is great insurance but we shouldn’t need him if we are to have a truly successful season.
I think Murray is very likely to improve. He has improved every season, but health is clearly a concern. Resigning McCoy was huge.
RBs: tough to argue we are in as good, much less better, place here. Bringing Conner back was necessary but a wash. Eno may replace some of chase’s production but doubt he fills all of it (he’s just not as talented). So here is a downgrade at present.
Chase is a nice, but very replaceable player. My concern is that the Cardinals might have to use a premium draft pick to replace Edmonds.
WRs: getting hop back is obviously a plus. Hopefully he is back to 100% and stays healthy. As of now we have lost kirk and green. Whilst I wasn’t enamored of either, their production has to be replaced. WR 2/3 is my biggest concern. I get that the Cardinals have faith in Moore, but they need at least one more productive player. I'd be more comfortable if they signed someone like Watkins to fill that 2/3 role and drafted a player.
TE: this is an overall upgrade on last season if max comes back healthy. But even that’s an if.
Everything in sports is always an "if". I'm more concerned with the Cardinals inability to find a productive 3/4 TE, while other teams seem to find guys like that constantly. It always seems to be an after thought.

You raise a greater concern, and that's the overall age of the unit with Pugh, Hudson, and Beachum being older. I'm not too concerned about the OL, but it's a group that could go to crap very quickly. There is some depth though.
DL: really all hinges on JJ’s health. The rest all, for the most part, JAGs. Could they improve? Sure, but none have flashed star, or even above average (maybe Zach Allen), talent. And JJ’s health is always a question mark. So this seems static to last season at present.
I'd really like to add a good young prospect to the group....but the problem is that I would like to add a good young prospect to the DL...the OL...WR corps....and an edge..oh and another young RB would be nice too! There just isn't the draft capital to do it...and Keim has struggled to draft. He has an overall winning record as a GM because he is good at identifying pro personnel, but that means expensive unsustainable teams.
Virgil is pretty much on par with Jordan Hicks. The ILB group is pretty much the same as last year.

Losing Jones hurts, but I doubt he is as productive going forward. He also has been putrid against the runs at times, only having periods of time where he is average.

Golden is a nice player and Kennard is probably league average. Uh....so much meh in the front seven.
Alford was better than Stevie Nelson who the board was having a stroke over not signing him. That's my view on free agency overall, lots of fools gold, better to wait and get the values than to throw big money at average players. The Cardinals really should bring back Hamilton, that kid can play a little.
S: strength of defense. As good as last year. Maybe incremental improvements from Thompson’s.
Safety might be the Cardinals overall best position group. Good starters AND depth.
So overall we are likely at present less talented in terms of depth, worse than last season at rb and wr, but hopefully going to realize improvement from youth at QB, LB and CB plus whatever we draft (I’m not counting any future signings or trades because those are 100% complete conjecture at this point).
I pretty much agree with almost everything you said.

Well Kenneth Murray is a Charger and Patrick Queen didn't win DROTY. So I think we can end this here.
Sorry-- Queen was THIRD in DROY voting. He was first on his team in tackles tho. Again, not sure what your point is here.
