The ILB prospects for this year are slim. After McClain and Spikes there isn't anybody who looks like they could come in and produce big time right away like a Jerod Mayo.
Just asking...

Prior to him doing so, who thought Mayo would come in and produce big time right away?

Lee is solid, but his teammate Navarro Bowman is more of a big play type player.

I'd love to have Lee...and get him in the later rounds only. He would not step in and start right away, if ever, but I think he could be a good depth guy. Bowman WOULD start right away, IMO, but he would be a pass-rushing OLB. I'd love to have him fall to us and have us draft him, but I doubt the team targets that position in the 1st round.

Bowman is among, if not the, smallest LB's in the draft and he's had plenty of off field issues. I'll agree that he was a playmaker at the college level though. Let's face it, unless McClain falls to us, there is no viable replacement in the forseeable future.

Bowman is listed at 6'1" and 232 on the PSU site. Just for size comparison sake, Elvis Dumervil is 5'11' and 248. I am sure that Bowman could put another 10 or so pounds on his frame.

I am simply not aware of the off-the-field stuff.

At any rate, I am not suggesting that Bowman could replace Dansby. My comment was more to the point of comparing his prospects vs. Sean Lee's.

PSU's website also has Joe Paterno listed as 57 years old :D. He's had two, that come to mind, incidents off the field. A disorderly conduct and and marijuana charge. He's been sentence to probation twice. It must have been a short probation period or the judge was a PSU grad.

Regarding those types of charges, I figure the difference between those with incidents vs. those without is being smart enough or lucky enough to not get caught.

So you may have a point! ;)

Not a good year imo to leave a huge hole at that position.

hmm that certainly isn't the consensus.

So which of the ILB prospects look like a potential Karlos Dansby other than McClain and Spikes? The guys I looked at on the draft sites after those two don't exactly get me excited about our chances.

Sean Lee of Penn State? Torn ACL in spring 2008. Calling STOUT!
Darryl Washington of TCU who Joeshmoe says is better suited for Hayes spot?
Darryl Sharpton at 5'11"????

Maybe Pat Angerer of Iowa. But he's barely 6 feet.

This is pure craziness. This is as good of a year as I can remember in recent history to fill Dansby's spot.

McClain
Spikes
Travis Lewis (haven't heard whether he's declared??)
Sean Witherspoon
AJ Edds
Joe Pawelek
Washington
Pat Angerer

If Spikes is available in the 2nd I think we'd take him (even though I'm still not sure how I feel about the guy). If we could get Edds (who I love) in the 3rd or Pawelek in the 4th, I would be psyched.

The truth of the matter is that you are supposed to fill needs via FA and draft the BPA and for the future so that rooks don't need to be counted on immediately. I'd like to see Antwaan Barnes of the Ravens brought in, but I am not sure if he is unrestricted or not. Anyone know? Maybe we could send them Q for him and a 2nd rounder?? How would you feel if we came out of the first 3 rounds with a LT, Gronkowski, a new stud WIL, a CB and a OLB?

What you need to remember that Dansby was orginally an WOLB that was moved inside, and even inside, he still pretty much played like a WLB in a 4-3. You don't need to look strictly at MLB to fill his position. If you're talking about Gerald Hayes' ILB spot, then yes, you do have to look at MLB.

Guys who can fill Dansby's role in this defense: AJ Edds, Sean Witherspoon, Roddrick Muckelroy.

I thought I heard on the radio that one of the odd things that's triggered with the CBA expiring is that in addition to the uncapped year ALL Fa's are RFAs.

I don't know the veracity of that statement, though; it was just some local sports guy talking.

only all FA's under 6 years are RFA instead of UFA. All others 6 or over are still UFA.

Well we'll never agree because I don't think there's anyway you can replace Dansby next September with any of those 3rd or 4th round guys. Most of the rookies who have come in lately and started and done well right away are first or 2nd round selections.

Mayo was the 10th pick in 2008 so obviously the Patriots thought very highly of him. Laurinaitis was the 3rd pick of the second round. Curry 4th overall, Orakpo 13th overall first round. Willis and Timmons 11th and 15th first round.

You're right I really didn't look that hard at the OLBs but now don't really see more than a couple so that still leaves only 3-4 and now we're in the same position as we were when BIG left hoping one of these guys is still around.

Thinking outside the box the Texas guy who would be best imo at filling in for Dansby would be Sergio Kindle. But he'll make a lot more money as a pass rushing OLB.

Kindle is big and quick and had about the same pass coverage stats as Muckelroy but Muck wouldn't be a bad guy to have at all although I don't think he'll ever be as good as Montez.

Duck, I usually stick with my Horns buddies but...Jerry Hughes!!! Wish we could get him, but I feel someone will fall in luv with the guy much like Larry English last year & beat us to the punch. I just feel Kindle will get demolished at the point of attack at OLB because he has trouble getting off blocks. The differance in Orakpo & Kindle are night & day to me.

Actually I was talking about Kindle playing ILB in Dansby's spot.

I tend to agree with you on him playing outside linebacker. I never have viewed Kindle as a DE/3-4 OLB like Brian was. But we'll see.
