Any band called "punk" that gets played on MTV, wears black, and tries to act tough. God, why isn't Henry Rollins shooting all these idiots?

Because Henry Rollins is one of them! :p

Seriously I agree. Any punk band that plays on MTV, can be bought at a major record store, and has a major following with kids of rich yuppie suburbanites.

There are way too many poser punks out there, while real punk rock is dying a slow death...

Another band to add to this thread is Green Day....I can't completely deny that I do like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", but that song is eerily similar to Nickelback.....

True, perhaps Green Day has matured and wants to broaden their sound (they attempted that of course with "Good Riddance/Time of Your Life"), but by doing so...they're definitely selling-out to their "legion of fans"....Yes, several bands have copied their sound (so perhaps they were forced to reinvent their sound)..... To me though...they're becoming too commercial which is a blatant "rip-off"....

I never liked Green Day.

I honestly can't think of a band in the 90's that I liked that didn't sellout in some way.

Freaking TLC. They thought they were all cool when the condom chick married Andre Rison and then burned his house down.

Bell Biv Devoe, they were good as New Edition, ruined their tough guy legacy forever, by dissing Bobby Brown and the other guy.

And do not even get me started on Janet Jackson, her Rhythmn Nation album was a classic. Next thing you know she all hot to trot and all that.

;)

Without a doubt, the band that most defines "sell-out" to me is Sugar Ray...

If anyone ever heard their 1st 2 albums, they actually combined some heavy-punk/thrashing metal with techno/rap, but that all since changed when "Fly" became their "break-thru cross-over hit"....Now, all they perform is "sappy top 40 pop"....
yes! Sugar Ray completely sold out. I remember them on Stern before they were mainstream & they rocked.

The first true sellout was Leif Garrott.
I just watched his "Behind the Music" last week.... It's unintentionally funny

Ice Cube. Once he went on that damn Lollapoluza tour and hanging out with the white folks, he's gone downhill on every album a lil more until his eventual War disc which just sux balls.

And Eminem too. I hated when he started killing everyone on his cd's and claiming to be a gangsta. Ha! Now he just makes stupid pop Hanson records.

Pearl Jam - sold out 1998, yeah that live album was great :thumbdown

Live cd's are not "selling out" I love live cd's. Especially since pearl jam changes lyrics on a few songs every now and then.

There are like 8 versions of Yellow Ledbetter. The latest one in madison square garden a great set of lyrics about a guy who loses his brother in Iraq for no reason and has to tell his father.

Id never hear that unless I was a roadie.

Pearl jam a sell out? you might of missed what they were for in the first place.

You have to admit, new Pearl Jam songs end up sounding like a Vietnam war protest song.

At least Red Hot Chili Peppers havent lost their identity over that same period of time...

Surely you jest. RHCP sold out HUGE, YEARS ago. That whole under the bridge fiasco, when Ric Rubin convinced Anthony Keidis he could sing? BLECH! T RHCP's used to be punk as f*ck, even with the crazy funk rap thing going. Yeah, all bands get old, and slow down, but this happened WAY before that, and they write nothing but it-all-sounds-the-same adult comtemporary alternative whiny crap now.

Man, I'd give my left nut for them to release an album that had HALF the intesity of Uplift **** party plan again.

Call me crazy, but I liked most of "One Hot Minute." The song Pea is funny. My college baseball team would get drunk and sing that song at parties!

Not knocking you personally Jim, b ut this is a great example. I used to get beat up by the jocks for listening to RHCP. When a baseball team sings its lyrics, they done sold out, bruthah.
