If you had never seen Blake on tv you would just think it was a studio mix. His appeal is live performance. His singing doesn't hold up.
But this flies in the face over everything that people are saying in the last 20 posts of this thread: Live performance is what counts.

Otherwise, Doolittle would win hands-down. She has a freaking golden voice, but the knock is she's a boring performer.

Right?

She is frightening to look at. She has no neck. She is haunting, in a spectre way, not in beauty. She looks like she's a member of the lollipop guild.

Maybe, as in the end of Blink, if she were singing behind a curtain I'd think more of her, but visual biases kill it completely.

I feel sorry for her. But I agree with you, too.

There has to be some give and take. While I believe that you have to be able to perform the main thing is the singing, since radio is their main outlet.

So a website called "GirlsTalkingSmack" is a reliable source in one article.

Another article just quotes a FAQ from AI's producers saying they will toss out votes believed to be from automated dialing services that can votes thousands of times.

And the article says the show was rigged to have Carried Underwood win. Which is weird considering she was the best of the bunch and has proven so with her career since the show. Possibly a career that is better than Clarkson's, but country isn't as mainstream as pop so it goes a little more unnoticed on the forefront.

I would need better evidence than something suggesting Scott Savol was undermined by the producers.

Here's the deal:

Blake:
Great Act
Marginal Voice
Mediocre Star Potential

Melinda:
Poor Act
Great Voice
Mediore Star Potential

Jordin:
Average Act with HUGE upside potential
Great Voice
Tremendous, All-time best Star Potential

I think you're categories are out of whack if you think Jordin has a voice anywhere in the same zip code as Doolittle.

Ok...

Melinda = Tremendous Voice
Jordin = Great Voice

k?

Melinda's voice is completely one dimensional. She sings like she's always semi-pissed about something...the typical r and b "I'm a strong woman and I need a man to treat me right" Tina Turner garbage. I guess people from the 80's can relate. That style is dead now. It just annoys the hell out of me and bores the hell out of me. You could connect all of her performances so far and release one really long song. Jordin on the other hand mixes it up, shows versatility and has had two absolutely unbelievable performances which put her in another league, probably the best performances ever on the show, and this is coming from a 17 year old AMATUER with her whole life ahead of her. Irregardless of who officially wins, Melinda will join Rueben and Fantasia in obscurity, and Jordin will go on to stardom. And according to dialidol.com, she had less than half the votes of Blake and Jordin. Notice they never proclaimed a "bottom two". She's gonzo next week.

probably the best performances ever on the show,

No. Not close. Her first song this week was the best I've seen this year by far (even though I hardly watch, I've seen at least two or three songs by everyone) but not Kelly caliber, or Tamyra Grey or several other contestants. Hell, Crazy Clay Aiken dropped some great performances on this show.

I met Jordin as a baby/toddler at an ASU function years ago as a student. I was more interested in shaking hands with Phillipi. Silly me. ;)

I spent most of my 20s as a session drummer -- marginally employed at that -- but that's my backing. In moments between college and later in my day career, I'd trip to LA for demo recordings, or to some guy's garage for a $25 home recording. There might be 1,500 voices just like Melinda's in LA right now. Many more in Nashville and no shortage of replicas struggling to land Broadways gigs in New York.

If I were a producer, I'd love to have Melinda doing background tracks on my album. She's a technician and she'd blend perfectly with other technicians. She'd be perfect as a background singer on American Idol -- and that's quite an honor, because that whole band is made up of some of the best musicians in LA. (Tommy Campbell kills me with his over-the-top fusion fills he gets away with on that show ... I'd get fired for pulling stuff like that!). As someone fronting a band ... she leaves me rather cold. She could make a career singing Disney ballads the rest of her life. She's exactly what they're always looking for.

Jordin's voice is not nearly as crystal. Her vibrato is too fast. It's just so unpolished. However, with some training she can become a powerhouse. I think that's why "Dog" keeps highlighting the fact she's only 17. Each week they're staring an unpolished, uncut 24-karat diamond in the face, and they're going to be the ones who get to polish and cut her to their specifications whether she wins or not.

Because I know the Sparks family, I was really rooting for Jordin to finish 4th or 5th. She'd still get plenty of backing for her own album, and she wouldn't be put through the American Idol meat grinder.

Oh well. At least she'll be doing what she loves, and I'm happy for her.

BTW, apologies to the Blake fans, but the guy's talents really lies in the producing/arranging category. He needs to be advising other artists with real singing/playing ability. His singing voice is too derivative of the Sinatras or old Vegas acts, and it's a weak one at that. His beatboxing skills have proven to not have a lot of life after the first few tricks, so now it just comes off like a gimmick. As someone who loves originality, I was interested to see what he could do, but I'm officially tired of it. When I learned he was going to beatbox -- again! -- last week, I really soured on him. He's not half as talented as Timberlake. Not even close. He's unique to American Idol, but that's not saying much seeing as how some of the most popular vocalists of the last 40 years would never make it to Hollywood by their standards: Bono, Sting, etc. The fact he still got in is something of an indictment of his singing ability to me, not an endorsement for it.

Maaan.

I like the show, but I don't think I've ever had the desire to go out and see someone from it. I wonder how many of those people called in sick just to go.
