1. Reports are that QB Kurt Warner would be looking for a 2 year deal in the area of $18M. The numbers are fair. More than fair. This contract would ensure that Warner would finally go into training camp as the undisputed #1, therefore it would be all the more ironic if Warner would now decide to retire just when he has earned the vote of confidence that he has aspired for for years now.

2. Todd Haley does love his job in Arizona and he's just had one year of calling plays...which is what he craves. If he takes the Chiefs' HC job, he could do what Whiz did and run the offense his first year...but he would likely have to relinquish that role as Whiz did in year two...which may not be completely to his liking. How about the Bidwills stepping up and sweetening the pot for Haley?

Haley seemed to overthink his gameplan yesterday...by over-estimating the Steeler defense, which he didn't do versus Atlanta, carolina and Philadelphia.

There's an old coaching mantra: you do what you do and make people beat it.

The one thing Haley underestimated was how hard it was going to be to expect Gandy and Brown to hold up on islands versus Harrison and Woodley.

The thing is..."chipping" versus the Steelers with the TE or slot WR is made to order against then because the "chipper" can slow the DE down and then run a delay route into the flat (the area they have had the hardest problem defending) or run a delay drag route over the middle...

The three things that are hardest to understand about Haley's offense: (1) the refusal to offer help on premier pass rushers; (2) the decision at times to make Warner take direct snaps in sure passing situations; (3) the propensity to run the ball on first and 20s...when what the team really needs is two 6-7 yard passes to create manageable third and 5 or 6s.

That said, Haley's passing schemes with all the rub offs and crossing patterns, short, intermediate and long, are as fine as any I've ever seen at any level and cater perfectly to this team's strengths.

Haley gets a mulligan for the first quarter and a half...it was his first Super Bowl as an OC and there is a tendency to over-think and over-prepare over the excruciatingly long two week period, rather than just dance with the girl that brung you, as they say.

This is why...the Bidwills must give serious consideration to rewarding Whiz first and foremost with a more lucrative contract extension and at the same time offering Haley a highly competitive salary that would make it even more attractive to stay in Arizona with Whiz and with this dynamic offense.

3. Anquan Boldin's situation is likley going to get worse...while Q deserves a healthy raise, he should realize especially after this post-season why Fitz deserves what he got and why Q doesn't quite deserve Fitz money. Q will likley think that he will get Fitz money elsewhere where he can be the top dog...but, Q's history of injuries and his style of play (which seems to contribute to the injuries) may be perceived as red flags for teams that would have to think about offering Q the top money he wants. Plus, Q is not fast...nor does he catch in a crowd a la Fitz...he's a consummate slot WR and teams tend to pay slot WRs less than marquis wideouts.

Q will try once again to force the team to trade him. This is obvious. He wants elsewhere. When this happens it will be very interesting to see what offers he and Rosenhaus can drum up. If they can find an attractive one (not like the Philly offer of Q for Lito Sheppard...or Q for a 2nd rounder)...otherwise, the Cardinals can once again stand pat and ask Q to play out his contract. The thing is...Q remains a valued teammate and his rantings were not as much of a distraction to the rest of the team...as players are getting al the more enured to the business aspects of their profession.

Seeing as the Cardinals are drafting 31st...if they are offered a mid-range #1 for Q, they'd probably take it to get the rookie RB they want.

4. The biggest off-season need: 2 pass rushers. If Terrell Suggs becomes available, he would be the #2 player signing priority behind Warner. The Cardinals needed edge rushers last night and got nothing. Bertrand Berry has been a real leader...but he led the team with only five sacks. To re-sign him as a situational rusher would be fine, but the team needs a double figure sack artist and a burst of youth at the position.

Chike Okeafor came on strong in the playoffs and was much more active and productive...perhaps the Cardinals may decide that they will be able to get a great year from him next year...and hope that Travis LaBoy will come back strong. But Okeafor's salary is exhorbitant at this point.

DE Antonio Smith is a tough call. He was ineffective last night....but real good in spots in the playoffs...his counterpart Darnell Dockett was head and shoulders the best interior d-lineman on the field last night...and the Cardinals almost always won games where both Dockett and Smith were making plays. Last night Dockett was and Smith wasn't. Wonder what Smith will be asking for. Might overprice himself out of the market. The question is: are Calais Campbell and Kenny Iwebema the long and short-term answers? Campbell showed some flashes but little in the playoffs...but with another year under John Lott's supervision, Campbell could be a unique talent...and Iwebema could also be better tan average at some point.

The guess is Smith moves on.

5. At NT Bryan Robinson was decent and was a good leader...and Gabe Watson came on strong toward the end (his tackle of Big Ben on the QB draw last night was huge)...but the key will be Alan Branch...it will be very interesting to see if the light bulb does finally come on, especially now that the Cardinals are in the national spotlight and he is one year from being tendered and two years from becoming a UFA.

6. At FS the Cardinals need a speedy playmaker and we fans have been screaming this for years...Robert Griffith to Terrence Holt to Aaron Francisco (I feel bad for Francisco because his game isn't suited for FS and he was being played there by default...and before you throw him completely under the bus...how about giving him credit for getting up after slipping and chasing Holmes down at the five to save a TD...and it looked like a busted coverage on the play as Holmes was WIDE open). What coverages were the Cardinals in when the game was on the line? Anyone know? Will Pendy be kept? Whiz is too competitive to allow these breakdowns to continue to happen.

7. The Cardinals need another cover CB to replace #3 CB Eric Green...and the #4 & #5 tandem of Ralph Brown and Michael Adams is solid as Brown was clutch the past several games as was Adams on special teams (get this...the Cardinals' STs OUTPLAYED the Steelers' in the Super Bowl...between Breaston's nifty return and Adams' tackle on Holmes and Adams' awesome play at the goalline corraling Ben Graham's punt).

8. As for LB Karlos Dansby...he's got to be re-signed or given the f-tag again, because the team does need to keep its core... and the public perception that the club is fully committed to its core. Dansby is one of the core, no question. I just wish the DC would move him around more to wreak havoc...because Dansby is oh so good on the edge. The f-tag may make the bets sense as that may keep Dansby motivated...which has been a concern.

9. Two things I heard from the NBC crew last night that rang sweetly: (1) "The Cardinals are finally TOUGH"; (2) Arizona should now be a super atteractive option for free agents.

10. The top priorities:

1. Warner
2. Whiz/Haley
3. Suggs
4. Dansby
5. Free Safety
6. Another edge pass rusher
7. RB
8. CB
9. P (Graham is a real good situational punter...if the could get his hang-time straightened out, he might be fine).
10. Re-signing J.J. Arrington as the speed spread back...he's good at it.

Good run down. I think that Edge moving along is going to help this offense more and more. It hink Whiz really wants to add that 2nd back to pair with Hightower and I think it would be a great move, especailly if Boldin is shipped out.

Not to mention, if Leinart eventually becomes our starter having a solid running game will make things much easier on him.

Agree with pretty much everything.

Just some of my thoughts

1) Just like you said Mitch, two pass rushers.. Let's get some of that Harrison/Woodley thing going on here..

Suggs would be my priority... right there with Warner and Dansby coming back.

There are some nice OLB rush guys that could be there at #31 or in the second round.

But we need two.

As for the present guys we have in the front 7...

I'm going to let Okeafor and Smith walk... Bring back Berry and Dansby..

2) Add a talented DB.. whether it be FS or CB.. we need either Rolle or Hood to get bumped down a slot IMO.. in all honestly the ideal situation would have both guys playing the 3rd CB role.. however, we can't fix all these problems in one offseason..

Therefore, if we land a good FS, move Rolle to NB.. or if we land a good CB move Hood to the NB role..

3) Im fine with the front unit.. Dockett, Campbell, Watson, Iwebema, Berry.. Bolster this group with Suggs and let's say a Larry English , Aaron Maybin, or Brian Cushing if they drop... or a Clay Mathews and we'd be in pretty sweet shape in the front 7

4) Bring back Kurt at all costs.. Pray Haley comes back.

5) Definite RB upgrade via FA or draft

6) I'm torn on Q right now.. but if somebody wants to part with a mid first rounder and Q is adamant about leaving then we should probably do it.

7) Oline upgrades.. we've gone a long long way with pretty much a patch work line... Credit to Grimm for getting the most out of guys like Gandy, Wells, Seindelin, and Lutui... i want to provide this guy some more talent and see what he can do..

I would like to see us add 1-2 guys who can come in a win a spot.. we were very fortunate that we didnt suffer one injury all yr on the line.. that won't happen again.. so lets build the quality depth here..

I can see where Haley deserves some criticism for the pass rush, but Kurt does not seem to like checking his backs into blocks. He seems to like rolling the dice instead and hoping that someone will be open quick enough. He sees the blitz, but doesn't change anything. I know lots of times he goes to his outlets short, but that helps get to those third and longs. Another thing that has bothered me all year long is the freaking short passes to covered receivers on 3rd and long.

Outstanding piece of writing...non emotional and spot on...funny when you prioritize the needs RB falls to 7th!! whether it is 5/6/7 the top four are clearly nothing to debate. Great job Mitch.

RB is never as much of a priority as some people make it, there are a few clearly special RB's in the leauge and the Super Bowl winner in years past rarely has one.

It's an oddity of the sport but I think it just takes the proper ability to spot adequate to good ones to get your team going in the right direction in terms of this position, RB's are only good for a relatively short time most of the time, you need a reasonable stable of them.

I'm good with Hightower and Arrington for the roles they play we just need to get some draft luck on one for a change.

On JJ one of the mysteries of the game to me was why he wasn't on the field in the offense until the end of the game?

The way he ran back KO's he looked a step slow like the knee was bothering him I thought. But Pitt does have the best KO coverage team in the NFL so it may have just been them(Mariucci pointed out that 3-4 teams always have good return coverage because they have extra LB's on the roster to play the 3-4).

So I'm assuming JJ isn't 100% and then he comes in on those last couple of drives, catches that dumpoff and he sure looked healthy on that play? So given the problems we had moving the ball earlier and the amount of times Kurt had to dump it to Edge(caught 4, one really bad drop and a couple of near misses), one wonders why we didn't have JJ in more to use as an outlet to try and beat the blitz?

As I said I assumed he wasn't 100% and they were only using him on KO returns until the end of game stuff where had 2 catches for 35 yards and showed enough burst to make me wonder where he was earlier.

I guess they were just more concerned with blitz pickup until the end there where they figured we have to throw.

I wish Haley would come back for one more year really or two or three, I don't see the Chiefs HC job as the plum it's made out to be that's like trading in a Corvette for a Ford Festiva.

I think he's got awesome potential and is getting better as an OC and if there is a way we can keep him I'd explore that first and foremost.

A guy here at work is just sure he's comming to KC and bringing Warner with him I was like oh yeah that's gonna happen!! NOT!

Warner is not going to play outside for a team like the Chiefs, that's just stupid.

BTW I'm a fan of using JJ much much more, wish they would and maybe in years to come they will.

IMO, it's a very serious omission to leave Anquan Boldin off that list. During the various pre-game shows yesterday, the point was repeatedly made that Ken Whisenhunt wanted to bring a toughness to the Arizona Cardinals. The other point was that his teammates consider Q the toughest player in the league bar none. You don't maintain 'toughness' by subtracting your toughest player from the roster IMO.

The other thing you shouldn't do is trade one of your core players who performs at a pro-bowl level year in and year out. It is very difficult to get value for that player because player-for-player trades in football are extremely rare, and draft choices are a crap shoot.

When you have a head case, or a morale destroyer, or a team divider, then by all means remove the cancer from the team. Anquan Bodlin is none of those. On the contrary, by all indications he's loved, respected, and admired by his teammates.

Now of course, there are two parties in any relationship. If Boldin is not agreeable to a reasonable upgrade in his contract, e.g. something in the 8-million per year range, then the situation changes. But I would say with all due respect to Q, it will be very difficult to find a passing offense close to what you have right here in the desert. There are only a handful of NFL teams that can match it. So please consider that when you're evaluating your response to any overtures from the Cardinals.

Boldin is a tough cookie to crack for us.

He's a number one WR stuck at number two for us forever.

The pride thing is IMO the biggest hurdle to that no matter what Q says, Fitz is probably even a friend but it's a pride and ego thing IMO.

He wants to be the guy and he's never going to be that here and so I think he'll just move on, but I hope I'm wrong.

Slot WRs are not the #1, even Welker at NE.

Not sure Leinart will stay if we sign Kurt for two more years. Hard to justify "paying him the money," (where have I heard that phrase before,) just to be the backup for Warner. We could draft a rookie, keep Brian St. Clair and use the money we save on Leinart to improve our bench.

Madden was talking about Pittsburgh conceding the Cards the flat passes to double Fitzgerald and how the Cards were taking advantage of it early. Then when the Steelers came up to defend the flat pass the Cards would go downfield to Fitzgerald. Really interesting stuff.

You know as well as I do he thinks of himself as a number one guy, whatever he plays he thinks he's the guy.

If Randy Moss was on the team he'd think that, it's the way Q is wired, you gotta love him for it but it's the way he feels.

Look over his past posts, Mitch abhors Leinart and has always fallen in love with the Cards 3rd string QB. At one point he wanted Warner cut for Shane Boyd.

Mitch knows is extremely knowledgable, but imo can be clouded when it comes to QBs.

I also don't see trading Boldin where we have the best WR tandem in the NFL.... I would like to see how Early Doucet gets implemented in the lineup as well... But the injury he took this year and coming back in just 2 games is incredible and deserves an upgrade in pay.... I believe we still win the division next year as well with this group. Also with Warner coming back though... But Boldin is part of our Core players...

I can see trading Boldin if the action benefits the team. As good as the Q is, is he as good as the paycheck he's gonna demand?

Great overall piece, by the way.

I don't understand why Doucet can't pick up for Q if he leaves. Then Breaston and Fitz keep their roles intact.

Also, Why in the hell do we not think Anquan freaking Boldin can get more than what the Lions got for Roy Williams?? Q is in a different league entirely. To me, the Raiders are the perfect fit. AFC team..... Big time QB needs a #1 WR. They will have a high first rounder in this draft and the next. AND AL DAVIS IS AN IDIOT FOR PEOPLE LIKE Q!!!!

Make it happen.

I can see trading him if there is no way out of it or a deal comes to the table that the Cards can't turn down. I trust the powers that be will make every effort to work this out. Rosenhaus will ask the moon I am sure... But I can't see trade him just to trade him though...

You can't wait too long to make changes to veterans. San Diego got something for Brees and unleashed their young stud. You don't want to experience a decline in a mid-season. Besides free-agency & the draft the Cardinals have to focus big time practicing their tackling. We were dreadful. Bill Parcells takes care of that in the summer camp.

My concern about Q, is that he reminds me of the guys we let go in '99 (??), like Lomas Brown and Larry Centers. History and Chemistry are two very important subjects for the Cardinals. And I think it's folly to expect Todd Haley to turn down the KC job, if offered. KC is an excellent franchise with a great fan base. And if he does get the job, I'm sure he'd be interested in Q, but would't give up their first round pick, which I believe he'd use on a QB, following the Atlanta Falcons road map. My hope is we keep Anquan. Make that a big hope.

Great post. Honestly, this is the main thing I took away from it. What a change. Signing Edge made a statement, but this is the next step. An evolution from signing E. Smith, to a big payday for Edge, to something hopefully a little closer to Dillon-to-the-Patriots when it comes to picking up a veteran RB. Not saying I want someone with as many miles on him as Dillon had, but it would be really cool to see someone sign on to be part of the Cards rather than to get their final contract.

As for Boldin, if they don't get what they want for him, they have to stand pat. I don't think he'll dog the rest of his contract because a) he's Boldin, and b) under those circumstances a great year can only help him on the open market.

Agreed. Great write up by Mitch as always, but go ahead and put Q in at #5, move everything else down 1 and take Ben Graham off the list....keeping him will increase our growing Australian fan base anyway....

Agreed. Lots of stuff got broken in my apartment when Larry Centers signed with the Redskins, and no one wants to see that again! We need Q's toughness on this team. We could get a great trade package for Q, but no one on this board truly knows how much he means in that locker room.

I don't agree with any of this at all.

Boldin broke free and took it the distance twice this year. He catches more balls over the middle than most WR, and can play X,Y or slot reciever positions.

I can't argue too much with the rest of the post, tho. Good stuff.
