Time of possession doesn't seem extremely related to rushing efficiency:

It also doesn't seem to be very correlated to SRS (PFR's metric that combines score differential and strength of schedule -- it's more blunt but similar to DVOA and hopefully won't trigger those who are sensitive to such things):

Wins is slightly more correlated (R-squared is 0.1129), but I'm not ready to say the data suggests that we need to keep pouring resources into the running game to win time of possession and dominate opponents.

It's not an argument anyone has made. The only argument was that running equaled TOP and TOP allowed you to control games.

What you are comparing above are irrelevant full game statistics. What people here seem to be talking about is defending a lead in the second half, and more specifically in Q4, and that being a competent running team helps achieve that.

We know this for absolute fact because NFL teams, with all their many thousands of hours of analysis, try to do exactly this.
