Based on?
Mainly their defense and depth. Last year they lost to David Mills Texans in a 41-29 matchup while giving Rex Burkhead the best game of his career. That game kept them out of the playoffs.

They have made big moves in free agency to fix the defense but I'm not sure it will be enough. On paper I think they look better than they are. They have a fantastic young QB and a lot of big name play makers, but it seems like they have a depth problem. From the few games I saw the guys they have playing beside the play makers might just be pure garbage? Like their depth looked much worse than the usual JAGs. In what is sure to be a blood bath division I think it will be their undoing.

Look at the other AFC West Teams.

Chiefs: No way they're the worst. No way.

Raiders: They just added the best WR in the NFL to an already stacked offense. They are going just as hard in free agency as the Chargers and they were better than the Chargers last year.

Broncos: Russel Wilson will be working with the best Oline he's had in years and Javonte Williams is a superstar running back that is going to breakout. It's likely Melvin Gordon is going to resign with them. Their WR's haven't had much throwing to them recently but they are good. The defense is stacked.

But frankly I'm really not sure. I think all these teams are going to be great next year. Any team could be in any position. In my mind the fight for last is between Raiders and Chargers. I am on the Broncos hype train.

I personally would pick Denver to come in last. But I see where your going with your thoughts.

I can't wait for the articles about how Dennis "The Barbarian" Gardeck could fill the hole left by an aging Chandler Jones, and Antoine Wesley is going to build on his late season success to thrive in his starting role across from DHop this year.

He is a beast but fragile.

Is there any player we could sign that wouldn't carry some negative comments?

Breaking News - Arizona trade for Aaron Donald

This board - He's 31 when the season starts. Injuries are going to start to hit. Giving up those picks for that salary is crazy. Keim sucks.

The only players this board are happy to sign are 25-27 years old. Pro bowl level or near to it. Below market value. Never been injured.

Hard to believe you're able to cling to such blind optimism at this point. Please tell me what is giving you hope right now? What are we supposedly missing?

Looks like the national media isn't a fan of Keim's off-season, either. This quote sums up the general sentiment of the article:

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote: General manager Steve Keim has often utilized a counterintuitive approach to free agency, taking on big-name veterans even when their asking price seems misaligned with their current value. Conner is only 26, but bringing him back on a three-year, $21 million contract felt like an extension of Keim's larger miscalculations. Without regard for cost, it's easy to see why Arizona would want to return a player who had 1,127 yards from scrimmage last season, though his touchdown output of 18 is bound to regress. Conner put up last season's stats, however, on a $1.75 million contract. The Cardinals are not the kind of team that should have been swept up in a bidding war for a running back, as their serious shortage of young talent in the pipeline means they need to spend wisely. A low-cost option would have been available somewhere in the middle to late rounds of the draft."

What are we supposedly missing?

A calm, reasonable demeanor mostly.

It's March. Such a long way to go yet. I just don't get the daily dose of angst a stress about what might be in 6 months time. What we have on the roster now will look vastly different by then, and then I will judge what I think this team might be.

Also, the constant "blind optimism" comments are silly. I'm not being optimistic. It's just far, far too early to judge.

Would you tell and artist that has made 5 brush strokes that their painting is going to be garbage? Or would you have to see how it develops first?

James Conner - 26 - 1127 scrimmage yards - 18 TDs - $7m per year - Press reaction - Bad deal, Cardinals overpaid for a 26 year old

Leonard Fournette - 27 - 1266 scrimmage yards - 10 TDs - $7m per year - Press reaction - That's a good deal for the Bucs.

Fournette is 5 months older than Conner. Got cut by the freaking Jags while still on his rookie deal also signed a cheap deal like Conner last year and yet someone his deal is good value. And he had a top class O line to work with and far less splash plays than Conner.

I'm sure that Stout could do a review after two strokes: stupid, horrible, criminal, egregious, etc., etc. with the usual B.S. disclaimer, 'I hope I'm wrong'. ;)

I didn't realize JC only had 1,127 scrimmage yards. I guess I should have figured it, with his low YPC.

Except we used to get fed this line of bull by the FO ALL THE TIME. "Judge us after June 1st, we have a plan, etc..." Yes, and it was almost always a bad plan. With a joke of a front office, what is more likely? That they have a super cunning plan ignoring FA talent and with limited draft capital, or that they once again have a bad plan? Optimism or even patience in the face of that is a tough ask.

Or I could say, "I'm not sure how talented you are, but you've bought crappy paint, a canvas with holes slashed in it, worn out brushes, and are working in a studio with poor lighting. I'm reasonably sure your painting won't hang in the great art museums or galleries." But, as a fellow artist, I would certainly root them on and "hope I was wrong" ;)

I love Hicks. He is a beast. Living in Chicago I’m just passing it along. He missed a lot of games last year.
Yes there are players I would and will be happy with should it happen.
I’m not going to keep my head in the sand to appease the rainbow chasers.

I laughed yesterday when I saw consternation about not signing Zadarius Smith yesterday. The same people wringing their hands about not signing, would have been the same people who pointed out his injury history if we had signed him.

People were upset at the beginning of last off-season too. Keim lets the first wave go and then hits the second wave.

Brit, the terrible thing about this year is that we CAN’T be active in free agency and we knew it.
We lost Jones, Edmonds and Kirk. Our cap space is a wreck.
I highly doubt if we had 40 m in cap space that we’d be sitting back waiting for “ value”. Whopper, we’ve retained a portion of our own free agents none of which would be considered an epic signing.
You keep believing this flood of signings and draft picks are going to put us at the top with the elite in the NFC.
What you define as negatively is merely many of us evaluating what’s in front of our face. You continue to cling to the hangnail of the best is yet to come. Doesn’t make you stupid, but it doesn’t make “ us” wrong.

That would be thoughtful, considerate and a recognition that judgement should be withheld, but the Stout we know and love would likely say that this putrid purveyor had the artistic sensibility of a rhesus macaque, the deft strokes of drug-addled pigeon and that anything produced would be a blight on the landscape of art and life itself. With, of course, the per usual disclaimer, 'I hope, I'm wrong.' ;)

I would have loved the signing because it's a gamble we really, really needed to take. But, hey, let's cross our fingers and hope an adequate, let alone really good or great, edge player magically falls to us.

The so-called rainbow chasers see your head firmly planted in your nether region, actually. ;)

Well, maybe not a rhesus macaque ;)

Sometimes you're super annoying, QC, but sometimes you bring great humor :)
